Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Hyundai Ioniq accepts up to 7.2 kW on AC. This cable hands over every watt of it. Domestic supply is single phase in any case, so no three-phase lead will make the car charge faster.

Start with which Ioniq you have, because one of the three does not plug in at all. The Hyundai Ioniq Electric charges at up to 7.2 kW on AC and the Plug-in Hybrid at 3.3 kW. The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has no charging socket and cannot use a cable of any kind. Among the electric cars there is a second split worth knowing: when Hyundai facelifted the Ioniq Electric in 2020 it raised the battery from 28 kWh to 38.3 kWh and the onboard charger from 6.6 kW to 7.2 kW at the same time, so the newer car both holds more and drinks faster.

Both plug-in versions use a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Hyundai fitted the Type 2 inlet from the start of UK sales in 2016, so there is no Type 1 Ioniq to worry about and no year where the connector changed.

The right buy is the 32A single phase cable. A British home supply carries a single phase and can push 7.4 kW through it, slightly more than the Ioniq will accept, so the car is the limit rather than the wiring. The 22 kW three phase lead has no role at all on this model, since the Ioniq never asked for three phase in the first place and cannot use two of the three conductors.

On the 38.3 kWh Ioniq Electric the 16A cable is the expensive choice in disguise. Six hours becomes eleven hours forty five, and the cheap rate window is only seven hours long, so the cable decides whether the car fills on the low tariff or spills over into the day rate.

Most Ioniq owners end up wanting a domestic socket lead as well. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable pulls 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket, roughly 12 miles an hour in a 38.3 kWh Ioniq Electric and about 8 miles an hour in the Plug-in Hybrid. Which Hyundai Ioniq needs a charging cable?

Only the plug-in versions. A Hyundai Ioniq Electric or Plug-in Hybrid uses the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, while the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has no charging socket fitted and runs entirely on petrol and its own regeneration.

How fast does a Hyundai Ioniq Electric charge on AC?

A 38.3 kWh Hyundai Ioniq Electric built from 2020 takes 7.2 kW, and the earlier 28 kWh car takes 6.6 kW. Hyundai raised both the battery and the charger at the same facelift, which is why a newer Ioniq fills a bigger pack in only a little more time.

Is the three phase cable a waste of money on a Hyundai Ioniq?

Yes. No Hyundai Ioniq has a three phase onboard charger, so a 22 kW cable would leave two of its three power conductors doing nothing on any supply anywhere. The 32A single phase cable already gives the car its full rate.

How long does a Hyundai Ioniq take to charge at home?

About 6 hours from empty for the 38.3 kWh Ioniq Electric on a 32A cable, 4 hours 45 minutes for the 28 kWh car, and about 3 hours for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid. The Plug-in Hybrid also fills completely from an ordinary 13 amp socket in around 4 hours 15 minutes.

What length of cable does a Hyundai Ioniq need?

5m fits a Hyundai Ioniq parked close to the wallbox on a private drive, helped by a modest 4.47 metre overall length. Pace out the distance from the wall unit to where the charging flap actually sits when the car is parked, and if that is more than about four metres, order the 10m.

Can I use my own cable at a public charge point with a Hyundai Ioniq?

Yes. Untethered AC posts are the standard on UK streets and in car parks, and a Hyundai Ioniq owner plugs in the same Type 2 to Type 2 lead used at home. The Ioniq Electric also has a CCS socket for rapid DC charging, where the charger supplies its own cable.

Compatibility

The original Hyundai Ioniq came in three forms and only two of them plug in. Between 2016 and 2022 you could buy an Ioniq Hybrid, an Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid or an Ioniq Electric. The Hybrid charges itself from the engine and has no charging port at all.

This is a different car from the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, which are separate models. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
