Product Description

The Honda e takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and 32A is the one to buy. Its onboard charger is rated at 6.6 kW, so a 16A cable at 3.7 kW would hold the car back by nearly four hours on a full charge. There is no sense in saving the small difference in price.

Battery size is where this car gets misunderstood. The Honda e is quoted almost everywhere as a 35.5 kWh car, but that is the gross figure. Usable capacity is about 28.5 kWh, which is why real world range falls short of the headline. Working from 28.5 kWh, a 32A cable fills the car from empty in roughly 5 hours. A 16A cable needs about 8 hours 45 minutes.

A three phase cable is wasted money here. The 6.6 kW onboard charger is the limit, so plugging into a 22 kW post changes nothing whatsoever. Buy the 32A single phase cable and put the difference towards the longer length instead.

Honda's later electric car, the e:Ny1, is a different proposition. It carries 61.9 kWh usable behind an 11 kW charger, so a 32A cable gives 7.4 kW at home and about 9 hours 30 minutes from empty. On a three phase post the 11 kW charger cuts that to roughly 6 hours 15 minutes, and that is the only Honda where a three phase cable does anything useful.

The CR-V e:PHEV is the one plug-in hybrid Honda currently sells. It has a 17.7 kWh battery and a 6.8 kW charger, and a full charge takes about 2 hours 30 minutes on a 32A cable.

Everything else wearing an e:HEV badge, so the Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V and CR-V Full Hybrid, is self charging. Those cars have no charging port and nothing here will connect to them. Honda sells the CR-V in both forms, so look for a charging flap before you order.

Which charging cable does the Honda e use?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and we would fit a 32A one. The Honda e has a 6.6 kW onboard charger, so 32A lets it take everything it can accept. From empty, the 28.5 kWh usable battery reaches full in about 5 hours. Both 5m and 10m suit the car equally well.

Is a 16A cable enough for the Honda e?

It works, but it slows you down. A 16A cable delivers 3.7 kW against the 6.6 kW the Honda e can accept, so a full charge stretches from around 5 hours to about 8 hours 45 minutes. Given how small the price gap is between 16A and 32A, the 32A cable is the sensible buy.

How long does the Honda e take to charge at home?

About 5 hours from empty on a 32A cable, based on 28.5 kWh usable and the 6.6 kW onboard charger. A 16A cable needs roughly 8 hours 45 minutes. The 3 pin lead at 2.3 kW takes around 14 hours, so treat that as a top up rather than a full charge.

Is the Honda e really a 35.5kWh car?

Not in practice. 35.5 kWh is the gross figure printed in the brochure. The battery gives you about 28.5 kWh once the protective buffer is taken out, and that smaller number is what governs charging time. Every figure on this page is worked from 28.5 kWh so the times match the car.

Does the Honda Jazz or Civic e:HEV need a cable?

No. Every e:HEV model, which covers the Jazz, Civic, HR-V, ZR-V and CR-V Full Hybrid, charges its battery from the engine and has no charging port. Only the CR-V e:PHEV plugs in, and Honda sells the CR-V both ways. Look for a charging flap before you order anything.

What cable does the Honda e:Ny1 need?

The same Type 2 to Type 2 cable at 32A. The e:Ny1 holds 61.9 kWh usable behind an 11 kW charger, so a home supply gives 7.4 kW and about 9 hours 30 minutes from empty. If you regularly use three phase posts, the 22kW cable unlocks 11 kW and roughly 6 hours 15 minutes.

Compatibility

The Honda e is a Type 2 car with a 6.6 kW onboard charger, so a 32A cable is the right buy and a 16A one would hold it back. One figure worth correcting while you are here: the Honda e is widely quoted as a 35.5 kWh car, but that is the gross capacity.   • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
