The Ford Transit accepts up to 11.3 kW on AC. The Transit Custom plug-in hybrid is 3.6 kW and the E-Transit is 11 kW. Nothing in the range can outrun a 22 kW lead, and a three-phase charge point is where the extra capacity turns into hours saved.

Home charging only? One phase is all a British house has, which means 7.4 kW on a wallbox. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) covers that and saves you the difference.

One Ford Transit charging cable covers the whole plug-in family, because every plug-in Transit has a Type 2 inlet and takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, but the onboard charger behind that connector runs from 3.6 kW on a Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid to 22 kW on the 89 kWh E-Transit. On a single phase supply, which is what a house and most small yards are fed by, all of them settle at 7.4 kW. Ford quotes 11.3 kW AC for the 68 kWh E-Transit, 11 kW for the E-Transit Custom, E-Tourneo Custom and E-Transit Courier, and 22 kW for the 89 kWh Enhanced Range E-Transit added for 2025. Diesel Transit, Transit Custom and Transit Courier vans carry no socket at all, so read the badge before ordering. The connector type never changes across the plug-in range, so the choice is simple: amperage, then length.

Which Ford Transit charging cable to buy

Full speed on a single phase supply: the 32A single phase cable. Our menu calls it 32amp (7.2kW) and it delivers 7.4 kW, the ceiling of a single phase feed and of every EV home charger fitted to a British house, which makes it the quickest charge a 68 kWh E-Transit (10 hours 30 minutes) or a 64 kWh E-Transit Custom (9 hours 45 minutes) will see behind an ordinary meter. It is also the only rating we build in 15 and 20 metre lengths. Worth paying for at a three phase depot: the 32A three phase cable. Sold as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it is not a car limited compromise on one van in this range: the 89 kWh Enhanced Range E-Transit has a 22 kW onboard charger, so on a real three phase feed the lead delivers all 22 kW and empty to full falls from 13 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes. On the 11 kW vans the same cable gives 11 kW, which takes a 68 kWh E-Transit to 7 hours. Wire it to one phase and it hands over 7.4 kW like everything else. Too slow for a working battery: the 16A cable. Sold as 16amp (3.6kW), it pegs the van to 3.7 kW, turning that 68 kWh E-Transit into a 20 hours 45 minutes job and putting back roughly 77 miles across a seven hour off peak window instead of roughly 147. The plug-in hybrids invert that: a 2019 to 2023 Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid or Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrid holds 13.6 kWh behind a 3.6 kW charger, Ford quotes 2 hours 45 minutes for a full charge, and the 16A lead reaches that ceiling on its own.

Length is a yard problem on this page rather than a driveway one, because Ford puts the inlet at the sharp end. The E-Transit takes its cable behind the front grille and the E-Transit Custom through the front bumper, which is the reverse of where most cars sit. Back a van into a bay, as almost every fleet and most tradespeople do, and the socket finishes at the far end of 5.53 metres of L2, 5.98 metres of L3 or 6.70 metres of L4 from a post on the wall behind it. That habit alone is why the 10 metre 32A lead is the usual order here. Nose the van straight at the charge point instead and the 5 metre version has slack to spare, since the inlet stops a pace from the unit. The 15 metre and 20 metre cables we stock answer a shared post in the middle of a yard, a van parked two bays along from the only free socket, or a unit on an office wall with the vans against the far fence. Measure the route the cable has to take, corners and all, before you pick a length.

For the nights a van does not sleep at the yard there is the Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, our 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option. It draws 2.3 kW from any 13 amp socket, which on a 68 kWh E-Transit is about 7 miles of range an hour and 33 hours 30 minutes from empty, so treat it as an overnight top up away from base, not a way to run the van. On a Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid it is a complete answer: 13.6 kWh refills in about 6 hours 45 minutes, so the van plugged in at a customer's outbuilding is full by the morning. The control box has a Type B RCD and lets you wind the current down to 6 amps, which keeps an old socket of unknown age inside a safe load. It is sealed to IP67, built to IEC 62752, CE marked and rated from -30C to +60C.

The 71 kWh E-Transit Custom pack that arrives from December 2025, rated at 232 miles, adds an hour to each of those: 10 hours 45 minutes at 7.4 kW and 7 hours 15 minutes at 11 kW. A 43 kWh E-Transit Courier, up to 181 miles, is the quick one at 6 hours 30 minutes on the 32A single phase lead and 4 hours 30 minutes on three phase. Capacities are Ford's own usable figures. A loaded van, a cold morning and a motorway run each take miles off the last column.

What charging cable does a Ford E-Transit take?

A Ford E-Transit takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, and the 32A single phase version is the home charging cable we recommend for a house or a single phase yard. The van's 11.3 kW onboard charger is a three phase rating, and a single phase supply carries 7.4 kW, which the 32A cable passes on in full and fills the 68 kWh battery in 10 hours 30 minutes. The 89 kWh Enhanced Range E-Transit uses the same cable and takes 13 hours 30 minutes. The same lead is compatible with untethered Type 2 posts in public car parks, so connecting away from the yard needs nothing extra.

Is the 22kW three phase cable worth buying for a Transit fleet?

It is the one Ford Transit page where the answer can be yes on the vehicle's own merits. The 89 kWh Enhanced Range E-Transit has a 22 kW onboard charger, so a three phase depot supply fills it in 4 hours 30 minutes rather than the 13 hours 30 minutes a single phase feed allows. On a 68 kWh E-Transit, an E-Transit Custom or an E-Transit Courier the same cable is capped at the van's 11 kW, which still makes a useful case at a depot, and at a house every one of these leads delivers an identical 7.4 kW because domestic EV chargers are single phase units.

Does a Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid want the same cable as an E-Transit?

The connector matches, the sensible choice does not. A 2019 to 2023 Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid carries 13.6 kWh behind a 3.6 kW onboard charger, and Ford's own figure of 2 hours 45 minutes for a full charge is reached on the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, so a 32A lead costs more and makes no difference to the time. The 2024 onwards 2.5 Duratec Transit Custom Plug-In Hybrid holds 11.8 kWh and Ford publishes no kW rating for it, only a claim of under four hours from 10 to 100 per cent, which the 16A cable also covers.

How long does a Ford E-Transit Custom take to charge on a 7.4 kW supply?

A 64 kWh Ford E-Transit Custom or E-Tourneo Custom takes 9 hours 45 minutes from empty at 7.4 kW, and the 71 kWh pack from December 2025 takes 10 hours 45 minutes. Few vans come back empty, so a seven hour overnight window at that rate returns about 168 miles, more than a typical day's work. Three phase power at the van's full 11 kW brings the same charges down to 6 hours 30 minutes and 7 hours 15 minutes.

Which Ford Transits have no charging socket at all?

The diesel Ford Transit, Transit Custom, Transit Connect and Transit Courier have no charging socket, so no electric vehicle charging cable on this site fits them. The vans that do plug in are the E-Transit and E-Transit Enhanced Range, the E-Transit Custom and E-Tourneo Custom, the E-Transit Courier and E-Tourneo Courier, the Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom Plug-In Hybrids, and the Transit and Tourneo Connect Plug-In Hybrids. An E prefix or a Plug-In Hybrid badge is the thing to look for.

How long a cable does a van reversed into a depot bay need?

Ten metres for most bays, because a Ford E-Transit keeps its inlet behind the front grille and an E-Transit Custom keeps its in the front bumper, so reversing in runs the lead past up to 6.70 metres of vehicle to reach a wall mounted post. Five metres is enough only where the van is driven in nose first or the charge point stands beside the front wheel. Fifteen and twenty metres exist for shared posts, kerbside parking and vans that have to sit two bays away from the only free unit.

Compatibility

Transit is a family rather than a single van, and there are now ten different Transits you can plug in. All of them use Type 2, so the connector is never the question. What varies is the onboard charger, and one van stands out: the E-Transit Extended Range has a 22 kW charger, double every other Transit, which is a genuine reason to buy a three-phase cable if your depot has three-phase power. Everything else is 11 kW or less. On a normal UK single-phase supply, every 11 kW and 22 kW van in this table charges at 7.4 kW, so at home one 32A cable does the lot. The two old Transit Custom PHEVs are the exception in the other direction: at 3.6 kW a 16A cable is all they can use.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
