Product Description

A Ford Puma Gen-E carries 46.8 kWh usable from a 53 kWh gross pack, and it is the kind of car people use for the school run, the commute and the weekend without thinking about it. That is the case for getting the cable right first time: the lead you order is what stands between a car that is always full in the morning and one you keep having to plan around.

Worth ten seconds before you order: only the Ford Puma Gen-E has a charging socket, so a petrol or mild-hybrid Puma, which is what most Pumas on British roads are, cannot take a cable of any kind.

There is a single battery across the Gen-E range, so Select, Premium and Black Edition all charge identically and there is no trim-by-trim decision to unpick. Every one of them uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The inlet on the rear nearside wing handles AC through its Type 2 section and DC through the CCS pins below, so that one cable covers a home wallbox and untethered public AC posts alike.

The onboard charger is rated at 11 kW on AC, three phase. Ford does not publish an AC figure for the car itself, so that rating comes from independent vehicle data rather than a Ford specification sheet. It is also a number a driveway cannot reach, because the street brings a single phase into a British house and the Gen-E therefore tops out at 7.4 kW at home. A 32A single-phase cable hands over all of it: 7 hours 15 mins from empty, and about 41 miles of range added for each hour it is connected. Paying extra for the 32A three-phase version changes none of that at home. It pays back at a workplace or an industrial unit already wired for three phases, where the car takes its full 11 kW and finishes in 4 hours 45 mins, and nowhere else.

A 16A cable halves the rate to 3.7 kW. Empty to full stretches from 7 hours 15 mins to 14 hours 15 mins, and the hourly gain falls from about 41 miles to about 20. On a battery this modest that still clears a long night, so the 16A cable is not useless here the way it is on a large SUV. The cost shows up during the day and in a cheap-rate window: seven hours of off-peak electricity fills the Gen-E completely on the 32A cable, and leaves you around 140 miles on the 16A.

The 43 litre front boot is where the cable is meant to live, and it is the neatest thing about how the Gen-E is packaged. The cable goes under the bonnet rather than into the luggage space or onto a wet carpet, and there is room for a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable beside it. That 3-Pin cable runs at 2.3 kW, about 13 miles an hour and 23 hours from flat, which makes it a genuine backup for a night at a house with no charge point rather than a daily habit. Its IP67 seal means an outdoor socket is fine in the rain.

Length follows the flap, which is on the passenger side towards the back of the car. On a 4.2m hatchback that parks kerb side onto the wallbox, 5m usually does the job. Pick 10m if the box is on the offside of the drive, if the car goes in nose first, or if the lead has to get past a second car on the way. 15m and 20m are for detached garages and shared bays.

Ford's other electric cars charge at the same 11 kW but need longer to do it. The Ford Capri carries up to 79 kWh and the Ford Mustang Mach-E more again, so both spend far longer on the cable than a Gen-E does. See the full Ford charging cable collection for the rest of the range.

Specification is IEC 62196 Type 2 with CE and TUV certification. The Type 2 to Type 2 seals to IP55 and the Type 2 to 3-Pin to IP67, and both run from -30C to 55C. Two year manufacturer's warranty, free next working day UK delivery.

The 259 mile WLTP rating applies to the Ford Puma Gen-E Select. Premium and Black Edition are rated at 251 miles, and earlier Gen-E cars were rated at 233 miles. Range added per hour above uses the 259 mile figure. In the cold, and at speed, the real figure is lower.

Does my Ford Puma need a charging cable?

Only if it is a Ford Puma Gen-E. That is the battery electric Puma, on sale in the UK since spring 2025, and it is the only version with a charging socket. Every other Ford Puma, including the 1.0 EcoBoost petrol and the mild-hybrid on sale since 2019, has no socket at all and cannot be charged from the mains. The quickest check is the rear nearside wing: a charging flap there means a Gen-E. A Gen-E also has no exhaust pipe under the rear bumper and no rev counter in front of the driver.

Which cable is right for a Ford Puma Gen-E?

The 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2. The car's inlet is Type 2 for AC, so that one lead serves a driveway wallbox and untethered public AC posts, and 32A is what lets the Gen-E draw the whole 7.4 kW a house can supply rather than half of it. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable is the sensible companion buy, and the front boot has room for both.

Will a 22kW cable charge a Ford Puma Gen-E faster?

Not on a driveway. The 22 kW rating belongs to a 32A three-phase lead, the Gen-E itself stops at 11 kW, and a house fed by one phase can pass it only 7.4 kW of that. So the expensive cable and the 32A single-phase one both finish the same 7 hours 15 mins charge. Somewhere that genuinely has three-phase power, such as a workplace or a business unit, the car reaches 11 kW and is done in 4 hours 45 mins.

Is a 16A cable enough for a Ford Puma Gen-E?

It is workable here in a way it would not be on a bigger EV, since 14 hours 15 mins from empty does sit inside a long night. What a 16A cable costs you is daytime flexibility and cheap-rate value, because 3.7 kW returns about 20 miles an hour rather than about 41. Seven hours of off-peak electricity therefore leaves the car roughly 140 miles short of where the 32A cable would have put it.

How long does a Ford Puma Gen-E take on a household socket?

23 hours from empty through a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable, which draws 2.3 kW from a 13A socket and returns about 13 miles of range an hour. That makes a twelve hour overnight stop worth around 155 miles, enough to treat a household socket as a real option for a night away rather than an emergency. The cable is adjustable from 6A to 12A if older wiring calls for a lower current.

What cable length suits a Ford Puma Gen-E?

Measure to the rear nearside of the car, because the Ford Puma Gen-E's charge flap is on the passenger side, the opposite side to the Ford Capri. On a 4.2m car that parks kerb side onto a wallbox, 5m is often enough. Choose 10m if the wallbox is on the offside of the drive, if you park nose in, or if the cable has to reach past a second car. 15m and 20m cover detached garages and shared bays.

Gen-E is the only Puma with a socket. The petrol and mild-hybrid Puma has no charging inlet anywhere on the car, so no cable will fit it, and the mild-hybrid's 48V battery is charged by the engine and by braking. Every Gen-E, whatever the trim, uses the same 46.8 kWh usable battery and the same onboard charger rated at 11 kW on three phases. That 11 kW figure is a three-phase rating, and a British house is on a single phase, so at home the Gen-E draws 7.4 kW and a 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable delivers all of it. Ford states the car comes with a Type 2 Mode 3 cable but does not publish its length or amperage.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. This is great if you can park close to the electricity supply and you don't need much length to reach your car this is a great option for you.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M should be sufficient to reach the vast majority of locations where you would like to charge your car. If this isn't enough you can always add an extension cable.

How to chose your charge speed?
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    If you are looking to charge your car using a 3-pin socket this is a great choice for you. The maximum charge speed for a 3 pin socket is 12 amps,  so this cable will be capable of charging at the maximum charge speed but it also gives you the option if you want to charge at a slower speed (Reducing risk and costs).

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.6kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.6kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.2kW. This is the maximum output from a domestic house. A 32amp charge speed will also be able to charge at all lower charge speeds (i.e 16amp - 3.6kW). This is a great choice if you are limited to 7.2kW or you only charge your car at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW. This cable will ensure that your ev charging cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. This cable is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
