Product Description

The Focus Electric is one of the few Type 1 cars where the 32A cable genuinely pays for itself. Its onboard charger accepts 6.6 kW, well above the 3.7 kW a 16A cable can supply, so a 32A Type 1 to Type 2 lead is the one to order.

Start with the connector, because it catches people out. The Focus Electric uses a Type 1 inlet, not the Type 2 fitted to nearly everything sold since. A Type 2 to Type 2 cable will not go in. You need Type 2 at the wall box and Type 1 at the car, which is exactly what a Type 1 to Type 2 cable is.

Ford put the car on the UK price list in September 2013 at £33,580 before the plug-in car grant, and sold it here until 2015. It was aimed at fleets and barely anyone bought one: about 24 were registered in Britain, all to Ford itself, and fewer than ten are believed to survive. That five door car has 19.6 kWh usable from a 23 kWh gross pack. With 6.6 kW going in, a flat battery is full again in about three and a quarter hours. A 16A cable nearly doubles that to six hours, which is the whole case for spending a little more.

Ford later built a facelifted Focus Electric with a 33.5 kWh battery for 2017 and 2018, still on Type 1 and still charging at 6.6 kW. We have not been able to confirm that this version reached UK buyers, so treat it as a possibility rather than something you will find at a British dealer. If you do run one, the same 32A cable applies and the larger pack takes closer to five and three quarter hours.

Type 1 is a five pin single phase connector, so no three phase Type 1 cable exists and 7.4 kW is the format's hard ceiling. British homes are single phase anyway. Your actual speed is set by whichever is lowest of the car, the supply and the cable.

No other Focus plugs in. The EcoBoost Hybrid of 2020 to 2025 is a 48V mild hybrid with no charging port, and every petrol EcoBoost and diesel EcoBlue since 1998 is the same.

Which cable does a Ford Focus Electric need?

A 32A Type 1 to Type 2 cable. The car has a Type 1 inlet and takes 6.6 kW, so 32A lets it charge at full speed and fills the 19.6 kWh usable battery in around three and a quarter hours. The Type 2 end plugs into your home charge point or a public post.

Is a 32A cable worth it on a Focus Electric?

Yes, and this is unusual for a Type 1 car. Most take 3.7 kW or less, but the Focus Electric accepts 6.6 kW. A 16A cable caps it at 3.7 kW and turns a three and a quarter hour charge into six hours. The extra outlay buys back most of an evening every time you plug in.

How long does a Focus Electric take to charge?

The 2013 to 2015 car needs about 3h15m from empty on a 32A cable, drawing 6.6 kW into 19.6 kWh usable. A 16A cable makes that roughly six hours, and a three pin lead at 2.3 kW takes about nine and a half. The later 33.5 kWh car takes around 5h45m on 32A.

Will a Type 2 cable fit a Ford Focus Electric?

No. The car's socket is Type 1, so a Type 2 to Type 2 cable cannot be plugged into it whatever adapter you are tempted by. Order the Type 1 to Type 2 cable, which carries a Type 2 plug for the charge point and a Type 1 plug for the car itself.

Do any other Ford Focus models plug in?

No. Only the Focus Electric has a charging socket. The EcoBoost Hybrid sold from 2020 to 2025 is a 48V mild hybrid that recovers energy under braking and never needs plugging in, and every petrol EcoBoost and diesel EcoBlue Focus built since 1998 has no charging port at all.

Should I buy a 5m or 10m Focus Electric cable?

Five metres works if your wall box sits within a couple of paces of where the car rests. Given how few Focus Electrics remain, many owners rely on public posts rather than a home unit, and 10m gives you room when the bay layout is not in your favour. Charge speed is identical either way.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
