Product Description

Which Cupra Formentor charging cable you need comes down to the year on the V5. A 2021 to mid-2024 Formentor e-HYBRID accepts 3.6 kW on AC. The facelift built from Q3 2024 accepts 11 kW, and its usable battery grew from 12.8 kWh to 19.7 kWh at the same moment. Cupra roughly tripled the charging rate and added more than half again to the pack, so the two cars genuinely want different cables.

Sorting out which one you own is the whole job. The Mk1 runs the 1.4 TSI e-HYBRID powertrain and claims up to 37 miles of electric range on the 204PS version, 34 on the 245PS. The facelift runs the 1.5 TSI e-HYBRID in 204PS or 272PS and claims up to 77 miles, depending on trim, wheels and power output. If your car quotes a range in the seventies, it is the newer one.

Every Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, both generations, every power output, VZ trims included. VZ is a trim level rather than a separate powertrain, so a VZ2 e-HYBRID charges exactly like any other e-HYBRID. Petrol and mild-hybrid Formentors, the VZ5 among them, have no charging socket.

Why a 32A cable is wasted money on a 2022 Cupra Formentor

The 2021 to mid-2024 car is capped at 3.6 kW by its own onboard charger, and a 16A cable already carries more current than that. Plug in a 16A cable, a 32A cable or a 32A three-phase cable and the Formentor takes the same 4 hours from empty and gains the same 10 miles an hour. The number does not move. We would rather tell you that than sell you the expensive one, so buy the 16A cable and spend the difference on electricity.

On the 2024 car the argument reverses completely. That 11 kW headline is a three-phase rating and British homes are supplied with a single phase, so an 11 kW Formentor draws 7.4 kW at a house and our 32A single-phase Type 2 cable delivers all of it. From empty that is 3 hours and roughly 29 miles of range for every hour on the plug. Fit a 16A cable to the same car and it is pegged at 3.7 kW, which stretches the charge to 6 hours and halves the hourly gain to 14 miles. Across a five hour off-peak window the 32A cable finishes with time to spare and the 16A cable does not quite get there.

A three-phase cable is worth the money only where a real three-phase supply exists, typically a workplace or a commercial yard. There the 2024 Formentor reaches its full 11 kW and fills in 2 hours. At a house the extra two phases have nothing to connect to.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin cable runs at 2.3 kW, worth about 9 miles an hour on the 2024 Formentor and 7 on the earlier one. A thirteen hour overnight stop fills either car from empty, which is why it is worth owning even once a wallbox is fitted: a weekend at a relative's house or a cottage with nothing but an outdoor socket still gets you home on the battery rather than the petrol engine. It is IP67 sealed and lives in the boot.

On the 2021 to 2024 Formentor, Cupra confirms the charge port in the front nearside wing, the left-hand side as you stand behind the car. Cupra does not publish the position for the facelift, so check your own before choosing a length. A front-wing port rewards parking nose in towards the wallbox and punishes reversing onto a driveway, because the cable then has to travel the full 4.45m of the car before it reaches anything. That is where 10m stops being optional. Lengths run 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m.

The Cupra Leon e-HYBRID uses closely related plug-in hardware, while the fully electric Born and Tavascan carry far larger batteries and want the 32A cable without argument. The full Cupra charging cable range lists every model we cover.

Times for the 2021 to 2024 car use the 12.8 kWh figure and Cupra also quotes 13 kWh, so treat them as indicative. Range added per hour comes from the car's WLTP electric range. Cold mornings and a fast motorway run will each reduce it.

Which charging cable does a Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID need?

A Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID needs a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable: 16A for the 2021 to mid-2024 car, 32A single phase for the 2024 facelift. The earlier Formentor is capped at 3.6 kW and cannot use anything above 16A. The facelift accepts 11 kW, which becomes 7.4 kW on a British domestic supply, and only the 32A cable hands over that much.

Why does my 2022 Formentor charge slower than a new one?

A 2022 Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID charges slower because its onboard charger is rated at 3.6 kW while the 2024 car's is rated at 11 kW. Neither the wallbox nor the cable is the limit, the car is. The newer Formentor also holds 19.7 kWh usable against 12.8 kWh, so it takes on more energy per hour and stores considerably more of it.

Is a 32A cable worth buying for a 2022 Cupra Formentor?

No. A 2022 Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID draws 3.6 kW whatever you plug into it, so a 32A cable fills the battery in the same 4 hours a 16A cable does and adds the same 10 miles an hour. You would be paying for current the car physically cannot accept. Buy the 16A cable.

Would a three-phase cable help a new Cupra Formentor?

Only if you charge somewhere with a genuine three-phase supply, such as a workplace car park. The 2024 Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID's 11 kW rating is measured across three phases, and a British home is fed by one of them, so at a house the car settles at 7.4 kW and the 32A single-phase cable already covers that in full. On a three-phase supply the same Formentor reaches 11 kW and fills in 2 hours rather than 3.

Can a Cupra Formentor be charged from a household socket?

Yes. A Cupra Formentor e-HYBRID charges from an ordinary 13A socket through a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable at 2.3 kW. The 2021 to 2024 car goes from empty to full in 6 hours 15 mins and the 2024 facelift in 9 hours 45 mins, so both are done inside a night. It is a slow way to charge every day, but a genuinely useful cable to have with you.

What length cable does a Cupra Formentor need?

Measure the run from your socket to the front nearside wing of the Formentor as it actually sits parked, remembering the cable has to go around the car rather than through it. On the 2021 to 2024 car Cupra puts the port on that front left wing, so 5m usually reaches if you park nose in and rarely does if you reverse in past 4.45m of bodywork. Cupra has not confirmed the facelift's port position, so check yours first, and take 15m or 20m for a shared bay or a detached garage.

Compatibility

The Formentor e-HYBRID changed completely in 2024. The car built up to mid-2024 accepts 3.6 kW, so a 16A cable already gives it everything it can take. The facelift accepts 11 kW from a battery more than half again as large, and needs a 32A cable to reach its full home rate. VZ is a trim level rather than a powertrain, so a VZ2 e-HYBRID charges exactly like any other e-HYBRID.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
