Product Description

Buying a cable for a plug-in hybrid is usually a low-stakes decision, because most of them are limited to 3.7 kW on AC and any cable clears that. The BYD Seal U DM-i breaks the pattern. It accepts 11 kW, and it does so on the Boost, the Design and the Comfort alike, so the battery refills at a rate you would expect from a small electric car and the cable in the boot decides how much of that you actually get.

Every Seal U DM-i takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. BYD never built a Type 1 variant of this car, so the plug shape is fixed and the only real question is how much current the cable can carry.

That 11 kW headline is a three-phase rating. British homes run on a single phase, which puts the ceiling on a domestic wallbox at 7.4 kW, and our 1-Phase, 32A cable hands over the whole 7.4 kW. Four hours is enough for the larger 26.6 kWh battery on that rate, so the car is full during an evening rather than needing the whole night. A 3-Phase 32A cable is a 22 kW component, and since the Seal U DM-i stops at 11 kW whatever you plug it into, it repays the extra outlay only where a genuine three-phase feed exists behind the socket.

The 16A cable is the one to think twice about. It pegs the car to 3.7 kW, the same ceiling the rest of the plug-in hybrid class lives with, which surrenders the Seal U DM-i's one clear charging advantage and halves the electric miles you bank per hour. On a car this quick to fill, the step up to 32A pays for itself in evenings.

Small batteries also make the Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable a serious option here, not merely a spare. At 2.3 kW from an ordinary UK 13A socket, the 18.3 kWh pack goes from empty to full in about nine hours and the 26.6 kWh in about thirteen. Without a wallbox on the wall, a three-pin cable left plugged in overnight still puts a Seal U DM-i on electric power for most short journeys. Here is what an ordinary house socket will and will not do for an EV.

Type 2 to Type 2 lengths run 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m, and on a car you plug in daily it is worth having one that reaches without a stretch. Sealing matters on anything that lies on a wet driveway, and the IP rating guide sets out what each grade keeps out. BYD's smaller plug-in hybrid, the BYD Seal 6 DM-i, takes a far lower AC rate and needs different advice, and the rest of the line-up sits in the BYD charging cable range.

What cable does a BYD Seal U DM-i need?

A BYD Seal U DM-i needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the 32A single phase version is the one to buy. It carries 7.4 kW, all that a single phase British supply can give the car, and a full charge lands between two and four hours depending on which battery you have. After that, only the length is left to choose.

Why does a plug-in hybrid like the BYD Seal U DM-i charge so fast?

Because BYD fitted an 11 kW onboard charger where the class norm is 3.7 kW. A BYD Seal U DM-i draws through a Type 2 inlet in exactly the way a full electric car does, and because a plug-in hybrid pack is a fraction of the size of an electric car's, that high rate finishes the job very quickly.

Is a 16A cable enough for a BYD Seal U DM-i?

A 16A cable will charge a BYD Seal U DM-i safely, but it holds the car to 3.7 kW and roughly halves the electric miles gained each hour. On the 26.6 kWh Comfort that is 8 hours 15 mins instead of 4. It is enough if the car sits still all night, every night, and not much use otherwise.

Would a three-phase cable help a BYD Seal U DM-i?

A three-phase cable helps a BYD Seal U DM-i only where three-phase power is actually installed, which for most owners means a workplace or a 22kW public post rather than the house. The car will not accept more than 11 kW, so the 22 kW rating has no headroom to use, and wired to a single phase board it performs like the 32A single-phase cable at 7.4 kW.

Can a BYD Seal U DM-i be charged from a household socket?

Yes, and on a BYD Seal U DM-i that counts as a real method rather than an emergency measure. The 18.3 kWh battery refills in around nine hours at 2.3 kW, so plugging in when you get home leaves you on electric power by morning. A wallbox is still faster and suits off-peak tariffs better, but the three-pin route genuinely works on a car with a pack this size.

What length cable suits a BYD Seal U DM-i?

Most BYD Seal U DM-i owners are served by 5m where the charge point sits beside the parked car. Take the 10m if you reverse onto the drive, park nose-out, or the wallbox is fitted round a corner from the charge flap. The 15m and 20m options exist for long driveways and shared parking areas.

All three trims accept 11 kW, which is unusually high for a plug-in hybrid. On a UK single-phase home supply the car draws 7.4 kW, which our 32A single-phase cable delivers in full and which fills even the larger battery in about four hours.     A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
