Product Description

Charging a BYD Seal at home is an arithmetic problem before it is a shopping decision. The saloon carries 82.5 kWh, the same single UK battery on the Design RWD and the Excellence AWD, and it accepts 11 kW on AC as standard, so nothing about the car itself changes the answer. What changes is how many hours the cable in your hand needs to move that much energy.

The socket at the car end is Type 2 to Type 2 on every Seal sold here, so the plug is decided for you and the only real question left is current.

The 11 kW on the spec sheet is a three-phase number, and British houses are wired single phase, so a Seal on a home wallbox pulls 7.4 kW. That is not a shortfall to work around, it is simply the ceiling your supply sets, and the 1-Phase, 32A cable hands the car every watt of it. From empty that is 12 hours 30 minutes, one long night on the drive. The 3-Phase 32A cable carries a 22 kW rating and works faultlessly, but the Seal will never take more than 11 kW from it, and a single-phase house simply gives back the same 7.4 kW. It pays only where a genuine three-phase feed exists at home or at work.

Drop to 16A and the sum stops working. At 3.7 kW the Seal needs more than 25 hours from empty, which is not a night, it is a night plus most of the following day. Off-peak tariffs make that worse rather than better. A four or five hour cheap window at 3.7 kW buys roughly 16 miles of range an hour, so you either leave the plug in through the expensive hours or set off with less than you meant to. The same window on a 32A cable returns around 32 miles an hour, double the energy for the identical slot of cheap electricity.

That is the whole case against the cheaper lead on this car. A 16A cable on a small city battery is a mild inconvenience. On 82.5 kWh it quietly converts most charges into unfinished ones, because you are asking a 3.7 kW trickle to fill a pack built around a 300 mile plus range. Anything from 32A upwards clears a full charge inside a single overnight period, and that is the line worth staying on the right side of.

Type 2 to Type 2 comes in 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m. The Seal is a long car with the flap set back from the nose, so the run from wallbox to socket is usually further than it looks from the front door. Range added per hour is quoted for the Design RWD. The Excellence AWD sits around 10 percent lower, roughly 29 miles an hour on a 32A cable, while the empty to full times are identical across the two trims. Expect the real figure to fall in cold weather and on long motorway runs.

What charging cable does a BYD Seal need?

A BYD Seal needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and 32A single phase is the size to buy. It runs at 7.4 kW, the most a normal UK house can deliver, and empties to full in 12 hours 30 minutes on the 82.5 kWh pack. Choose a length that reaches your charge point without being pulled taut.

How long does a BYD Seal take to charge from empty at home?

A BYD Seal takes 12 hours 30 minutes from empty on 7.4 kW, which is what a 32A cable gives you at home. Almost nobody does that, because arriving on a genuinely flat 82.5 kWh battery is rare. Half a battery is a little over six hours, comfortably done before morning.

Is a 16A cable ever sensible on a BYD Seal?

Rarely on a BYD Seal. A 16A lead caps the car at 3.7 kW and pushes a full charge beyond 25 hours, so it can finish neither overnight nor inside an off-peak window. It only stacks up if your charge point is limited to 16A anyway, or if your mileage is so low that a couple of hours a night keeps you topped up.

Does a 22kW cable charge a BYD Seal faster?

A 22kW cable speeds up a BYD Seal only where the supply is three phase, which almost no UK home is. The car stops at 11 kW whatever the lead is rated for, and 11 kW needs three phases to exist at all. Fed from a normal single-phase house, a 22kW cable delivers the same 7.4 kW and the same 12 hours 30 minutes as the cheaper 32A one. On a real three-phase feed the full charge falls to about 8 hours 30 minutes.

Is a three-pin cable worth carrying in a BYD Seal?

Yes, in a BYD Seal it is worth having as a spare rather than a plan. A three-pin lead gives 2.3 kW from a 13A socket, roughly 10 miles of range an hour, so a night somewhere without a charge point still hands back close to 100 miles. Running an 82.5 kWh battery this way full time would mean over 40 hours per charge.

What cable length does a BYD Seal need?

Most BYD Seal owners settle on 10m. The car is 4.8m long with the charge flap set back from the nose, so 5m only reaches when the wallbox is practically touching the wing. Walk the route the cable will really follow, around the bonnet or along a wall, and pick 15m or 20m if the parking space is a detached garage or a shared bay.

One battery, one answer. On a UK single-phase home supply the Seal draws 7.4 kW, which our 32A single-phase cable delivers in full and which fills the battery overnight. Avoid the 16A cable on a battery this size, it stretches a full charge past 25 hours. The 32A three-phase cable is only worth buying if you have a genuine three-phase supply, and even then the car caps itself at 11 kW.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
