Product Description

The Dolphin is the one BYD where the trim badge changes the technical answer, because two different batteries have worn the same name. The current 60.4 kWh car, in Comfort or Design trim, accepts 11 kW on AC. The earlier 44.9 kWh cars are the ones worth checking, because the entry Active trim accepts only 7 kW.

What the trim never changes is the socket. Every BYD Dolphin, both batteries and every trim, charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. BYD has never fitted a Type 1 inlet to this car, so that half of the decision needs no research.

The 11 kW headline is a three-phase number, and that is where it gets misread. Domestic supplies in this country are single phase, which caps what any home wallbox can hand over, so a 60.4 kWh Dolphin on a home charger tops out at 7.4 kW. Our 1-Phase, 32A cable carries the full 7.4 kW, which makes it the cable almost every Dolphin owner should be buying. The 3-Phase 32A version is rated to 22 kW and does the car no harm, but the Dolphin will never draw more than 11 kW from it, so that rating only repays itself where a genuine three-phase feed already exists at home or at work.

On a 44.9 kWh Dolphin, look up the trim before you read the table. The Active is a 7 kW single-phase car, and a 32A cable covers that in full with capacity to spare. The Boost is where the published sources disagree: BYD UK quotes 11 kW three-phase for it, EV Database records 7.4 kW single-phase, and we will not pretend one of them is wrong. It makes no difference to what you buy. Both of those figures arrive at 7.4 kW once they meet a single-phase supply, so the 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 is the correct cable for a Boost whichever source turns out to be right.

The cable to walk past is the 16A. It holds the car at 3.7 kW, which turns a full charge of the 60.4 kWh battery into more than eighteen hours instead of nine and a quarter, and drops the hourly gain to 16 miles rather than 32. Our Type 2 to Type 2 runs to 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m, enough for a charge point mounted on the wrong side of the house.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable comes in 5m and 10m and draws 2.3 kW from an ordinary household socket, worth around ten miles of range an hour. Against a battery this size it is a trickle rather than a plan, but it is the cable you want in the boot the day you park somewhere with nothing else to plug into. Which cable does a BYD Dolphin need?

A BYD Dolphin needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 32A single phase, and that holds for both batteries. It supplies 7.4 kW, as much as a single-phase home supply can give the car, and it covers the 7 kW Active trim in full too.

Do the two BYD Dolphin batteries charge at different speeds?

Yes, the two BYD Dolphin batteries do differ, which is unusual across the BYD range. The 60.4 kWh Comfort and Design take 11 kW on AC. The 44.9 kWh Active takes 7 kW, while the Boost is quoted at 11 kW by BYD UK and 7.4 kW by EV Database. On a single-phase home supply all of them settle at 7 to 7.4 kW, so the difference shows up in the timings, not the cable you order.

Is a 22kW three-phase cable worth buying for a BYD Dolphin?

A 22kW cable is worth buying for a BYD Dolphin in one situation only, which is a three-phase supply you already have. The car accepts 11 kW at most, so a 22kW cable has no way of pushing more than that into it. Where three phase is present, the 60.4 kWh car goes empty to full in about 6 hours 15 minutes rather than 9 hours 15. Where it is not, the 22kW cable charges at the same speed as the 32A single-phase one.

How long does a BYD Dolphin take to charge overnight?

A BYD Dolphin refills at roughly 32 miles an hour on a 32A cable, so a seven hour night puts back around 225 miles. The 60.4 kWh car holds 265 miles in total, so anything short of arriving home empty leaves a full battery by morning. The same seven hours on a 16A cable returns about 112 miles.

Will a three-pin cable keep a BYD Dolphin topped up?

A three-pin cable will keep a BYD Dolphin going for short daily mileage and not much more. At 2.3 kW it adds about ten miles of range an hour, so a night on the socket is measured in tens of miles rather than a full battery. That suits a few miles of commuting each way. For regular full charges you want the 32A Type 2 to Type 2 on a wallbox.

How long a cable does a BYD Dolphin need?

A BYD Dolphin needs a cable that reaches the charge point with slack to spare, and we stock 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m. Measure the route the cable will actually take, around the car and along the ground rather than straight across the drive, and if that lands near a size boundary take the longer option. Spare cable coils away in the bag; one that stops half a metre short goes back in the post.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
