The BMW iX3 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. A 22 kW lead covers the quickest version built and is the one to bring to a three-phase post.

Charging on your own driveway only? Domestic supply here is single phase and caps the car at 7.4 kW. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers that in full and costs less.

Two different electric vehicles wear the BMW iX3 badge in the UK, and both take a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable through the same Type 2 inlet. The 2021 to 2024 iX3, the electric X3 with a 74 kWh battery, has an 11 kW onboard charger. The new iX3 that arrived in March 2026, built on BMW's Neue Klasse platform as the iX3 50 xDrive and the iX3 40, has an 11 kW charger as standard and a 22 kW charger where the AC Charging Professional package was ordered. On a UK home wallbox every one of them charges at 7.4 kW. BMW UK's technical data lists the new car's AC charging as 11 / 22 kW, and that second figure is why this page has three tables: the charger fitted to your vehicle decides which one you read, and whether the dearest cable here is a good buy or wasted cost.

Which BMW iX3 charging cable to buy for home charging

Full speed at home on any iX3: the 32A single phase cable. Under its menu name of 32amp (7.2kW) it delivers 7.4 kW, and a house wired with a single live conductor cannot hand a car any more than that, so the 2021 car, the iX3 40 and the iX3 50 xDrive all charge at the same rate on a driveway, whatever maximum charge rate the spec sheet gives. Faster, on one car and one kind of socket: the 32A three phase cable. The menu calls it 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), and it runs at its full 22 kW only on a 2026 iX3 with the AC Charging Professional package, and only at a charge point fed by three live phases, usually a workplace or a hotel car park. There the iX3 50 xDrive goes from 16 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes. On a 2021 to 2024 iX3 the same cable stops at the car's 11 kW, and at any house it gives 7.4 kW because two of its three power pins have nothing to draw from. Too slow on every iX3: the 16A cable. Listed as 16amp (3.6kW), its 3.7 kW turns the 74 kWh car's 11 hour charge into 22 hours 30 minutes and puts back about 100 miles in a seven hour cheap rate window against about 200 on the 32A cable, so the saving on the cable is spent on electricity at the day rate.

Cable length turns on where the inlet is. The charging socket sits on the offside rear quarter of both vehicles, above the rear wheel on the driver's side, and the car is 4.73 metres long in 2021 to 2024 form and 4.78 metres as the 2026 iX3. That position favours reversing in: with the wallbox on the house wall and the tail towards it, the 5 metre cable reaches without crossing the car. Drive in nose first, or mount the charger on the nearside, and the lead has to run the full length of the body, so the 10 metre is the one to order. Kerbside charging at a lamp post charge point puts the offside socket on the road side of the car, another case for 10 metres. No adapter is involved at any of these: the same Type 2 connector fits the wallbox, the public charge point and the vehicle, and rapid DC chargers carry their own tethered lead, so this cable is for AC charging only. The 15 metre and 20 metre are 32A only and suit a garage separate from the house or a shared parking court.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is the portable charger for a garage socket or a relative's house. It draws 2.3 kW from a 13 amp home socket, has a Type B RCD in the control box and can be set down to 6 amps on an old circuit. On any iX3 it is a way of not being stranded rather than a way of charging: about 9 miles of range an hour on the 74 kWh car and 11 miles an hour on the new one, so a night on a three pin plug returns 60 to 80 miles.

Do not assume a wallbox cable came with the car. BMW's UK material for the 2021 iX3 lists a Flexible Fast Charger, a 6 metre lead for a three pin or industrial socket rather than a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and BMW UK sells the Mode 3 cable as a separate accessory. For the 2026 iX3 BMW UK has published no statement about what is in the boot, so check before ordering. Without the AC Charging Professional package a 2026 iX3 is limited to 11 kW at a three phase post, so the three phase cable row reads 11 hours 15 minutes and about 51 miles an hour for the iX3 50 xDrive, and 8 hours 30 minutes and about 53 miles an hour for the iX3 40. The 108.7 and 82.6 kWh figures are the usable energy BMW quotes for the new cars; the 74 kWh figure is BMW's net capacity for the 80 kWh gross pack in the 2021 to 2024 iX3. The 2021 to 2024 range is BMW UK's 281 to 286 miles for the post-facelift M Sport; the 2021 Premier Edition cars were rated a few miles lower. WLTP for the iX3 50 xDrive runs from 420 to 500 miles depending on wheels and trim, and for the iX3 40 from 331 to 395, so the range per hour on a fully specified M Sport Pro sits below the table figure. Below freezing, and after an hour on a fast dual carriageway, the hourly figure comes in lower than shown.

How do I tell whether my BMW iX3 is the 11 kW car or the 22 kW car?

By year first, then by option: every BMW iX3 built from 2021 to 2024 has an 11 kW onboard charger and no upgrade was available. A BMW iX3 delivered from March 2026 has 11 kW as standard and 22 kW only if the AC Charging Professional package is on the build sheet; a BMW dealer can confirm it from the registration, or the vehicle's charging menu will show a 22 kW ceiling when connected to a three phase post. If you cannot check, buy the 32A single phase cable, because at home the two cars behave identically at 7.4 kW.

Is the 22kW cable worth buying for a 2026 BMW iX3 that charges at home?

Not for home use alone, because a 2026 BMW iX3 on a domestic wallbox draws 7.4 kW through the 22 kW three phase cable and through the cheaper 32A single phase cable alike, since a house supplies one phase of electricity. The three phase cable earns its price when the car has the AC Charging Professional package and is plugged into a genuine three phase post, where the iX3 50 xDrive charges in 5 hours 30 minutes instead of 16 hours 30 minutes. Buy it if that describes your workplace; otherwise the 32A single phase is the right cable.

How long does a 2021 to 2024 BMW iX3 take to charge on a home wallbox?

About 11 hours 15 minutes from empty to full on a 7.4 kW wallbox with the 32A single phase cable, for the 74 kWh battery in the 2021 to 2024 BMW iX3. A seven hour off peak window adds about 200 miles, so a typical evening plug in from a third full completes overnight. On an 11 kW three phase post the same car finishes in 7 hours 30 minutes.

Does the iX3 50 xDrive battery need a different cable from the iX3 40?

No, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive and the BMW iX3 40 share the same Type 2 inlet and the same 11 kW standard or 22 kW optional charger, so the same cable fits both and charges both at the same rate. The 108.7 kWh battery in the iX3 50 xDrive simply takes longer to be fully charged: 16 hours 30 minutes at home against 12 hours 30 minutes for the 82.6 kWh iX3 40, which is why the 16A cable and the 3-pin cable are ruled out on the larger car for anything but emergencies.

Is there a Type 2 charging cable in the boot of a new BMW iX3?

Not necessarily, because BMW UK's 2021 iX3 material lists a Flexible Fast Charger, a mobile charger for domestic and industrial sockets rather than a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and BMW UK sells its Mode 3 fast charging cable separately as an accessory. For the 2026 BMW iX3 there is no published statement from BMW UK about a supplied cable. Check the boot before a wallbox is installed, and expect a used iX3 to come with whatever the previous owner left.

What cable length reaches a BMW iX3 socket on the offside rear?

5 metres, if the BMW iX3 is reversed towards a wallbox on that side, since the socket sits above the offside rear wheel of a car about 4.75 metres long. Driven in nose first, or with the charger on the nearside or the far side of the drive, the cable has to run the length of the body and 10 metres is needed. Kerbside charging on a UK street puts the socket on the road side, which also calls for 10 metres.

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
