Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The BMW iX1 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. This cable carries the fastest version of the car at full speed and works on any three-phase charge point you meet.

Only charging at home? A British house is single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW whatever cable is plugged into it. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) gives you all of that for less money.

Every BMW iX1 sold in the UK, the xDrive30 from 2022 and the eDrive20 from November 2023, carries the same 64.7 kWh usable battery and the same 11 kW onboard AC charger, takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, and draws 7.4 kW from a home wallbox. Cars built from February 2026 hold 65.2 kWh, which lengthens the range rather than the charge. One item on the specification varies and it is not written anywhere on the car: BMW has offered a 22 kW AC charger as a cost option since launch, and BMW UK's press material for both the xDrive30 and the eDrive20 quotes 6.5 hours to fill the battery at 11 kW against 3 hours 45 minutes at 22 kW. A car carrying that option is indistinguishable from one without it. It alters nothing on a driveway and a great deal at a three phase post, and it is the only question this page has to settle.

Home charging a BMW iX1: choosing the right cable

Full speed on a house supply: the 32A single phase cable. Our menu name for it is 32amp (7.2kW) and the working figure is 7.4 kW, the most any property fed by one live conductor can pass to a car, so this is what an iX1 pulls overnight whether or not the 22 kW box was ticked. From flat it needs 10 hours and it returns about 36 miles of range for every hour connected. Quicker only where three phases reach the socket: the 32A three phase cable. It appears in the drop down as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). At a workplace or car park post carrying three live phases a standard iX1 runs at 11 kW and is done in 6 hours 45 minutes, while a car with the 22 kW charger uses the cable to its rating and finishes in 3 hours 15 minutes. Plug the same lead in at home and it passes 7.4 kW like the cheaper one, since the second and third phases find nothing at the wall to draw from. Too slow for a battery this size: the 16A cable. Sold as 16amp (3.6kW), it holds the car at 3.7 kW, which stretches a full charge to 20 hours and drops the seven hour off peak return from roughly 252 miles to 126. On an iX1 that gap decides whether the car wakes up full or finishes its charge on the daytime tariff.

Length is the one part of this the option list cannot answer for you. The iX1 measures 4.50 metres, short for an electric car, and its charge port sits on the right hand rear wing, the driver's side of a UK vehicle. Reverse onto a drive with the wallbox on that side of the house and the 5 metre lead arrives with rope to spare. Turn the car so its nose faces the wall, or mount the unit on the passenger side, or park outside a garage with the charger inside it, and the plug now sits a whole body length from the socket, which is the job of the 10 metre. The 15 metre and 20 metre versions are 32A single phase and suit a detached garage, an allocated bay in a residents' car park, or a post across a shared forecourt. Measure wall to rear wing with the car standing where you actually leave it, because two Type 2 leads may never be joined to cover a shortfall.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is for the nights when there is no wallbox at all. Shown in the menu as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), it takes 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp home socket and adds roughly 11 miles of range an hour, so filling an iX1 from empty on it would run to about 32 hours. Its real use is leaving a relative's house 70 or 80 miles better off than you arrived, and keeping the electric car moving in the weeks before an installer can fit a wallbox. There is a Type B RCD inside the control box, the current can be turned down to 6 amps where the socket is on old wiring, and IP67 sealing means an outdoor socket in the rain is no trouble.

The plug-in hybrid version of the same bodyshell has its own BMW X1 xDrive30e charging cable page, and every lead we build for the marque is listed in BMW EV charging cables. BMW's launch material for the iX1 said the car left the factory with a Mode 3 charging cable and the Flexible Fast Charger on board, but BMW UK repeats no such promise for cars ordered today, and a used iX1 comes with whatever the previous keeper left in the boot, so look before the electrician turns up. Both of our cables start working at -30C, the Type 2 to Type 2 up to +50C and the Type 2 to 3-Pin up to +60C. The Type 2 to Type 2 is built to IEC 62196-2 with CE marking; the Type 2 to 3-Pin is built to IEC 62752 and is CE marked. Sealing is IP55 and IP67 in that order. With the 22 kW charger fitted and a three phase post to use it on, any iX1 above finishes in 3 hours 15 minutes and picks up between 92 and 107 miles an hour. Battery capacity is the same across the trims in each period, so it is the charging capacity of the onboard charger and not the size of the pack that separates these rows. The February 2026 xDrive30 has no table of its own: it shares the 65.2 kWh pack, is rated at up to 288 miles and puts back around 33 miles an hour on the 32A cable. BMW's published times sit either side of ours, 6.5 hours at 11 kW against our 6 hours 45 minutes and 3 hours 45 minutes at 22 kW against our 3 hours 15, because BMW allows for a different charging loss. WLTP figures vary depending on wheel size and trim: BMW UK gives 268 to 296 miles for the pre-2026 eDrive20 and 259 to 270 for the xDrive30, so a car on the largest wheels belongs at the bottom of each band. A cold morning and a steady 70 mph both take miles off the last column.

What is the best charging cable for a BMW iX1?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, in whichever length reaches the car. A BMW iX1 on a British home wallbox charges at 7.4 kW, this cable carries every watt of it, and a 65.2 kWh eDrive20 goes from empty to full in about 10 hours. It costs a few pounds more than the 16A lead and saves close to ten hours on each full charge, and the same EV charging cable plugs into untethered Type 2 public charging stations in car parks and on streets, with no adapter needed.

How can I find out if my BMW iX1 has the 22 kW onboard charger?

Check the build sheet, or ask a BMW retailer to look it up from the registration, because a BMW iX1 with the optional 22 kW AC charger is outwardly identical to one without: same badge, same battery, same year. BMW has kept it on the price list as an option since the xDrive30 arrived in 2022 and it has never been given a model name of its own. If nobody can tell you, order the 32A single phase lead, since on a driveway a 22 kW iX1 and an 11 kW iX1 both settle at 7.4 kW, whatever the onboard charger is capable of.

Would the three phase cable speed up a BMW iX1 on my driveway?

No. A BMW iX1 connected to a domestic supply is held at 7.4 kW whichever Type 2 cable is used, so the 22 kW three phase lead costs more and still gives the 10 hour charge the 32A single phase gives. Its case is a workplace, hotel or car park charge point carrying three live phases, where a standard iX1 needs 6 hours 45 minutes and one with the 22 kW option needs 3 hours 15.

Does the eDrive20 charge any faster than the xDrive30?

No. The BMW iX1 eDrive20 and the BMW iX1 xDrive30 share a 64.7 kWh battery, a Type 2 inlet and an 11 kW onboard charger, so the same cable delivers the same output to both vehicles and each takes about 10 hours on a 7.4 kW home wallbox. The difference is in what an hour buys: the front wheel drive eDrive20 gains roughly 34 miles an hour against 31 for the four wheel drive xDrive30, because it goes further on the same energy, which is what decides that figure on any electric vehicle.

How far will a BMW iX1 get on one night of off peak electricity?

About 252 miles, taking a seven hour cheap rate window, the 32A single phase cable and a 2026 BMW iX1 eDrive20 gaining 36 miles of range an hour. The earlier eDrive20 manages roughly 238 miles over the same night and the xDrive30 about 217. Few owners ever plug in on an empty battery, so one off peak period is normally enough to start the morning at 100 per cent on home charging alone.

How long a cable does a BMW iX1 need on a driveway?

5 metres, where the BMW iX1 is reversed towards a wallbox on the driver's side, because the socket is on the right hand rear wing of a car just 4.50 metres long. Parked nose to the wall, or charging from a unit fitted on the passenger side, the plug ends up a full car length away from the wallbox, so 10 metres is the size to order. Shared parking, a garage set back from the house and kerbside posts are what the 15 and 20 metre cables cover. Every length carries the same Type 2 connector and is compatible with any UK home wallbox and public AC charging post.

Compatibility

Every iX1 is fully electric. The petrol and diesel X1 shares the same body but has no charging port, and the X1 xDrive25e and xDrive30e are plug-in hybrids, which are different cars again. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
