The BMW 530e accepts up to 11 kW on AC. The 2017 to 2023 car is 3.7 kW and the 2024 on car is 11 kW. The 22 kW cable matches the highest rate the model reaches, and a three-phase supply is where that rate is actually reachable.

If it only ever charges at home, buy down. A house supply is single phase, so the ceiling is 7.4 kW, and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) hands over every watt of it.

The BMW 530e has had three onboard chargers since it reached the UK in 2017, and the year on the V5 tells you which cable to buy. The G30 saloon and G31 Touring of 2017 to 2023 charge at 3.7 kW, so the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable is full speed. The G60 saloon and G61 Touring from 2024 take 7.4 kW on a home wallbox, and cars built from November 2024 accept 11 kW at a three phase post, so on any G60 the 32A cable is the one that pays. BMW's launch material for the G60 gave 7.4 kW and a 3 hour 15 minute charge; BMW UK's current technical data lists 11 kW and 2 hours 15 minutes, both right for their build dates. The charging port is Type 2 on every version of this plug-in hybrid; what changes is the charging power the vehicle can take, and with it the amperage worth paying for.

Choosing a BMW 530e charging cable by year

2017 to 2023 cars, full speed: the 16A single phase cable. Our menu labels it 16amp (3.6kW); in use it carries 3.7 kW, everything a G30 or G31 530e's onboard charger will accept, and the 12 kWh battery of the 2019 to 2023 car is replenished in around 3 hours 15 minutes. 2024 onwards cars, full speed on a wallbox: the 32A single phase cable. Sold as 32amp (7.2kW), it hands over 7.4 kW, all a UK house on one phase can give and exactly what a G60 530e draws at home, taking 19.4 kWh from flat to full in 3 hours rather than 6 on a 16A lead. Owners of an early 530e expecting to move to a G60 or an electric BMW should buy the 32A now; on the old car it simply runs at 3.7 kW. Works, but no faster on a driveway: the 32A three phase cable. Listed as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it still gives a G60 530e 7.4 kW on any house supply. Its higher price is justified only on a G60 built from November 2024 plugged into a genuine three phase AC charging station at an office or car park, where the 530e draws 11 kW and is done in 2 hours. On an earlier G60, and on every G30, it charges no quicker than the cheaper cables.

Which of the four lengths you need depends on where the flap sits. On every 530e the charging socket is in the front left wing behind the wheel arch, the passenger side at the front on a right hand drive car. The G30 saloon is 4.94 metres long, the G60 5.06 metres. Driven in forwards with the wallbox on the front wall or the passenger side, the 5 metre cable arrives with plenty in hand. Reverse in and the socket ends up a whole car length from that wallbox; the 10 metre covers that, and a charger round the corner on the driver's side of the house. Our 15 metre and 20 metre options exist in 32A single phase only, for a garage away from the house, a communal car park or a lamp post charger over the pavement. A safe Type 2 extension cable does not exist, so if unsure, measure wallbox to flap with the car parked as you leave it and pick the length that leaves a loop to spare.

The Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, listed as 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), splits the generations again. It plugs into a normal 13 amp wall socket, draws 2.3 kW, has a Type B RCD in its control box, drops to 6 amps for an older circuit and is sealed to IP67. On a 2017 to 2023 530e it fills the battery in 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 15 minutes depending on the pack, well within a seven hour cheap rate period, so like most small battery plug-in hybrid vehicles the older car can be run with no wallbox at all. A G60 needs roughly 9 hours 30 minutes on this lead for its 19.4 kWh, which overruns the cheap rate and leaves the car around 70 per cent by morning, so for the newer car it is the lead for a night away and the weeks before a wallbox goes in.

BMW's UK material for the 530e talks about charging from a domestic socket and a BMW wallbox but does not promise a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and BMW sells its Mode 3 cable separately as an accessory. UK owners report the BMW three pin charger stored in the boot of most G30 cars and a Type 2 lead only where the first owner paid for one, so a used 530e may arrive with no wallbox cable. BMW quotes 19.4 kWh usable for the G60 and 10.8 kWh net for the 12 kWh G30 facelift battery, and those are the figures the first two tables use; for the 2017 to 2019 car BMW published only the 9.2 kWh gross figure and a 29 mile range on the old NEDC test, so that table runs a little optimistic on both counts. BMW's own wallbox times are around 15 to 20 minutes longer than ours on each car because BMW allows for more charging loss. The 64 mile figure is the G60 saloon; BMW UK gives 54 to 59 miles for the G61 Touring and 53 to 57 miles for the 550e xDrive, which shares the 530e's battery and charger, so an hour on the cable is worth a mile or two less in those. Sub-zero mornings and a fast dual carriageway both pull the range column down.

How do I know whether my BMW 530e charges at 3.7 kW, 7.4 kW or 11 kW?

By the year, and then by the build month. A BMW 530e registered between 2017 and 2023 is the G30 saloon or G31 Touring and its onboard charger is 3.7 kW single phase, so the 16A cable is full speed. A 530e registered from 2024 is the G60 or G61, and BMW's launch specification for that car was 7.4 kW single phase with a 3 hour 15 minute charge. BMW UK's current technical data lists 11 kW and 2 hours 15 minutes, and owners report that the 11 kW charger arrived with cars built from November 2024. If your G60 was ordered in 2025 or later, treat it as an 11 kW car; if it was one of the first deliveries, check the vehicle's charging screen while connected to a three phase post.

Is the 32A cable wasted on a 2021 BMW 530e?

For speed, yes: a 2021 BMW 530e has a 3.7 kW onboard charger, so the 32A single phase cable fills its 12 kWh battery in the same 3 hours 15 minutes as the 16A cable. Two things still favour the 32A: the 15 and 20 metre lengths come in 32A alone, and the cable stays useful on a G60 530e or a fully electric BMW rather than becoming the slow one. If neither applies, buy the 16A and keep the difference.

What does a BMW 530e draw from a home wallbox, and which cable carries it?

A G60 BMW 530e draws 7.4 kW from a home wallbox and the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable carries all of it; a G30 or G31 530e draws 3.7 kW and either the 16A or the 32A cable carries that. The 11 kW figure on the newest cars needs three phases at the socket, which a British house does not have, so a domestic wallbox tops out at 7.4 kW whichever cable is plugged in. The three phase cable comes into its own only at a workplace or car park charging station fed by three phases, where a November 2024 onwards 530e drops from 3 hours to 2. Whichever amperage you choose, the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable also connects to the untethered Type 2 sockets at public charging stations.

Can a BMW 530e run on a 3 pin plug without a wallbox?

A 2017 to 2023 BMW 530e can. The Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable delivers 2.3 kW and refills the 9.2 kWh car in about 4 hours 30 minutes and the 12 kWh car in about 5 hours 15 minutes, both comfortably inside a seven hour off peak tariff, so many owners of the older car never fit a wallbox. For a G60 530e the same cable takes roughly 9 hours 30 minutes to fill 19.4 kWh, overrunning the cheap window, so on the newer car the 3 pin lead is for nights away and a wallbox with the 32A cable is the daily arrangement.

Is a Type 2 charging cable supplied with a BMW 530e in the UK?

Not as a rule. BMW's UK material for the 530e describes charging from a household socket and a wallbox but does not list a Type 2 to Type 2 cable as standard, and BMW sells its Mode 3 cable as a separate accessory. UK owners of G30 cars usually report the BMW three pin charger in a bag in the boot, with a Type 2 lead present only where the first owner ordered one. On a used BMW 530e assume nothing is included until you have confirmed what is in the boot; if it is empty, the 32A single phase cable on this product page suits every version.

Compatibility

The 2024 car charges three times faster than the one before it. The G60 5 Series moved the 530e from 3.7 kW to 11 kW. Check your year. Note the all-electric i5 is a different car on the same body, listed separately on our i5 page. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
