Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The BMW 330e accepts up to 11 kW on AC. Nothing in the range can outrun a 22 kW lead, and a three-phase charge point is where the extra capacity turns into hours saved.

Home charging only? One phase is all a British house has, which means 7.4 kW on a wallbox. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) covers that and saves you the difference.

Every G20 BMW 330e sold in the UK since 2019, saloon or Touring, rear drive or xDrive, charges through a Type 2 inlet in the front nearside wing, and a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable fits all of them. What the year decides is the charging power: a 330e built before July 2024 has a 3.7 kW onboard charger and a 12 kWh battery, while the updated car built from July 2024 carries 19.5 kWh usable and an 11 kW charger, which on a UK home wallbox means 7.4 kW. BMW's own charge times give the two cars away: a full charge in 3 hours 24 minutes on a wallbox for the early 330e, and 2 hours 15 minutes for the new one despite a battery nearly twice the size. Before the update the vehicle was the bottleneck; after it, your house is.

Which BMW 330e charging cable to buy

Full speed at home on a 2019 to mid 2024 car: the 16A single phase cable. The menu label is 16amp (3.6kW); the true figure is 3.7 kW, all that car's onboard charger will take, and a 12 kWh battery is full in about 3 hours 45 minutes. Full speed at home on a car built from July 2024: the 32A single phase cable. Labelled 32amp (7.2kW), it delivers 7.4 kW, as much as a single phase house can hand over, and takes the 19.5 kWh battery from empty to full in 3 hours against 6 hours on the 16A cable. That halving is also why a 32A cable is the safe buy for anyone with an early 330e who expects to move to a newer 330e or a fully electric BMW. Works, but no faster at home on either car: the three phase 32A cable. Our menu calls it 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW); it is the most expensive cable on this page and its extra two phases are dead weight on a driveway, so most 330e owners can avoid it. On the newer 330e it only earns its price at a workplace or car park post with a real three phase feed, where the 330e pulls its full 11 kW and finishes in 2 hours. On the early vehicle it is capped at 3.7 kW wherever you plug it in.

For length, the flap position is what matters. BMW places the 330e charging socket in the front wing on the left of the car, between the wheel arch and the front passenger door, and the saloon and Touring are both about 4.7 metres long. Drive in nose first with the wallbox on the house wall ahead of you and the 5 metre cable reaches with a loop to spare; an adapter or extension lead is never the answer. The 10 metre version (16A or 32A) is for owners who reverse in, which puts the socket at the far end of the vehicle from most wallbox positions, and for a charger mounted on the side of the house rather than the front. The 15 metre and 20 metre cables are made in 32A only and suit a detached garage, a shared forecourt or a kerbside charge outside a terrace.

The three pin option splits by year too. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is the lead most people call a granny cable or granny charger: it draws 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp socket, never through an extension lead, adds about 7 miles of electric range an hour on either 330e, carries a Type B RCD in the box behind the plug, can be turned down to 6 amps for an older circuit, and is IP67 sealed. On the 12 kWh 330e it refills a flat battery in about 6 hours, so it fits a seven hour off peak tariff window, and plenty of early 330e owners run on nothing else. On the 19.5 kWh version the same lead needs about 9 hours 30 minutes, which no longer fits the cheap window; the new 330e is the first 3 Series plug-in that genuinely wants a wallbox, and the three pin option becomes the cable for a night at a relative's house rather than the daily plan.

BMW's launch material for the G20 330e says a standard charging cable for a household socket is included, stored in a bag in the boot, and makes no matching promise about a Type 2 to Type 2 cable; BMW UK sells that cable separately as the Mode 3 fast charging cable, option code 04T4. UK owners' reports follow the order sheet: some cars came with a BMW Type 2 cable in a second bag, others with the three pin charger alone, so a used car may well arrive with nothing for a wallbox. The larger 5 Series plug-in is covered on the BMW 530e charging cable page, and the full set of leads for the brand sits in BMW EV charging cables. BMW publishes 12 kWh as the gross capacity of the 2019 to 2024 battery and no usable figure, so the times in the second table are worked on the full 12 kWh and the real car finishes a little sooner. The 63 mile figure is the saloon on standard wheels; BMW quotes 61 miles for the Touring, 60 for the xDrive saloon and 57 for the xDrive Touring, so an hour on the cable is worth two or three miles less on those. The 320e of 2021 to 2024 shares the 12 kWh battery and 3.7 kW charger, so the second table applies to it unchanged. The earlier F30 330e saloon of 2016 to 2019 has the same 3.7 kW charger and a 5.7 kWh usable battery, so it is full in about 1 hour 45 minutes on any Type 2 cable and 2 hours 45 minutes at 2.3 kW from a 3 pin socket. A cold battery and a 70 mph cruise both shave a few miles off every figure in the range column.

What type of charging cable does a BMW 330e use, and is it the same for a 2021 and a 2025 car?

Every BMW 330e uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable for a wallbox or public post, and a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable for a household socket, but the right amperage flipped in July 2024. A 2021 BMW 330e has a 3.7 kW onboard charger, so the 16A cable already delivers everything it can accept. A 2025 BMW 330e has an 11 kW charger and a 19.5 kWh battery, and on a home wallbox it draws 7.4 kW through the 32A single phase cable, finishing in 3 hours rather than the 6 hours the 16A cable would take. If you are not sure which vehicle you have, read the electric range on the dashboard after a full charge: the old car shows 30 to 37 miles, the new one shows 50 miles or more.

Does paying for the 32A cable save any time on a 2019 to 2024 BMW 330e?

No. A BMW 330e built between 2019 and mid 2024 has a single phase onboard charger rated at 3.7 kW, so the 16A cable and the 32A cable both fill its 12 kWh battery in about 3 hours 45 minutes. The two reasons to choose the 32A version anyway are that the 15 metre and 20 metre lengths are only made in 32A, and that a 32A cable moves across to a July 2024 onwards 330e or an electric BMW without becoming the slow cable.

Can a BMW 330e reach 11 kW on a home wallbox?

No, and no cable changes that. The 11 kW BMW quotes for the 330e from July 2024 is a three phase figure, and a UK house has one phase, so the car charges at 7.4 kW at home and the 32A single phase cable carries all of it. The three phase cable only comes into its own at a post fed by three phases, typically a workplace, where a 2024 onwards 330e charges in 2 hours instead of 3. A 2019 to mid 2024 BMW 330e never exceeds 3.7 kW on any supply.

Can a BMW 330e be charged from a 3 pin plug socket overnight?

On the 2019 to 2024 BMW 330e, comfortably: the Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable runs at 2.3 kW and fills the 12 kWh battery from empty in about 6 hours, inside a typical seven hour off peak window. On the 19.5 kWh 330e built from July 2024 the same cable needs about 9 hours 30 minutes, so a full charge spills past the cheap rate and you will usually start the day at 70 to 80 per cent. It still works for an occasional night away, but a wallbox with the 32A cable is the sensible daily arrangement for the newer 330e.

Is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable in the boot of a BMW 330e from the factory?

Not necessarily. BMW's launch material for the G20 330e states that a standard charging cable for a household socket is supplied in a bag in the boot, and says nothing about a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for a wallbox or public post; BMW UK lists it as an accessory, the Mode 3 fast charging cable, option code 04T4. Owner reports from the UK are split between cars ordered with it and cars with the granny charger alone, so it is not something to count on, and on a used BMW 330e the previous owner may have kept whatever did come with it. Confirm what is in the boot before you order, and if the 3 pin charger is missing too, the Type 2 to 3-Pin cable here replaces it.

Which cable length suits the BMW 330e's front wing socket?

The BMW 330e charging flap is on the front nearside wing, between the wheel arch and the passenger door, on a car about 4.7 metres long. Parked nose in, with the wallbox on the wall in front of the car or on the nearside, the 5 metre cable reaches with slack to spare. Reversing in moves the socket to the far end of the drive from that wallbox, and a charger mounted on the offside or round a corner does the same, which is where the 10 metre cable is the right buy. For a garage set away from the house, a kerbside post or a shared parking area, choose 15 or 20 metres in the 32A version.

Compatibility

Check your registration year before you buy. The 2024 update tripled the 330e's charging speed, from 3.7 kW to 11 kW, and nearly doubled the battery. Same badge, very different car. Trim level makes no difference: SE, Sport, M Sport and M Sport Pro all charge the same.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
