Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Audi A6 TFSI e accepts up to 7.4 kW on AC. This cable hands over every watt of it. Domestic supply is single phase in any case, so no three-phase lead will make the car charge faster.

Three different plug-in Audi A6s now share the name, and only one of them is this car. The Audi A6 TFSI e, the C8 plug-in hybrid sold from 2020, charges at 7.4 kW single phase and never had a faster option. The A6 e-tron is fully electric, takes 11 kW and has two charging ports. The newer A6 e-hybrid, which replaced the TFSI e badge, also takes 11 kW. If your car wears TFSI e on the boot, the number that matters is 7.4 kW, and this is the right page.

An Audi A6 TFSI e uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Audi supplied a Mode 3 cable with the car when new, which many used examples no longer have. The charging flap sits on the left side towards the front, opposite the fuel filler, though Audi does not state the position in its own literature so it is worth confirming on your own car.

Buy the 32A single phase cable. This is one of the tidiest matches in the catalogue: the car asks for 7.4 kW, a British single phase supply provides exactly 7.4 kW, and the 32A cable carries it. Three phase power belongs to commercial premises, and even if you had it, the A6 TFSI e could not take a watt more than it does on your driveway. The 22 kW cable cannot help this car anywhere.

The 16A cable is the one to think twice about. Two and a quarter hours becomes four and a half, on a car charged every night, and the miles put back per hour drop from 22 to 11.

On a battery this size the 3-pin lead is a genuine overnight charge. Audi published no usable capacity for the 14.1 kWh launch battery, so its times come from the gross figure and are a slight overestimate. Expect less in January than in July, and less on a motorway than around town.

What charging cable does an Audi A6 TFSI e need?

An Audi A6 TFSI e needs a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable in the 32A single phase specification. The car draws 7.4 kW at most, a British house supplies exactly that much, and this is the cable that connects the two without losing anything in between.

Is the Audi A6 TFSI e the same as the A6 e-tron?

No, and they charge very differently. The Audi A6 TFSI e is a petrol plug-in hybrid limited to 7.4 kW on AC. The A6 e-tron is fully electric, takes 11 kW three phase and has a charging port on each side of the car. The newer A6 e-hybrid also takes 11 kW. None of the figures on this page apply to either of those.

Would an 11kW cable charge an Audi A6 TFSI e faster?

No. Some listings show an 11 kW charging time for the A6 TFSI e, but that is a calculator output rather than a specification. Audi fitted a 7.4 kW single phase charger from launch to the end of production, so the car physically cannot draw 11 kW from any supply.

How long does an Audi A6 TFSI e take to charge?

About 2 hours 15 minutes from empty on a 32A cable for both battery sizes, since the larger pack is only a few kilowatt hours bigger. A 16A lead roughly doubles that, and an ordinary 13 amp house socket takes around 7 hours.

What length of cable does an Audi A6 TFSI e need?

This is a 4.94 metre saloon with the charging flap towards the front on the nearside, so 5m is enough where the wallbox sits near the front of the drive on the same side. Given the car's length, 10m is the safer order if you reverse in or the unit is at the far end of the space.

Can I use my own cable at a public charge point?

Yes, on AC. Untethered Type 2 posts are the norm in UK streets and car parks, and the A6 TFSI e uses the same lead there as at home. It has no DC rapid charging at all, so a Type 2 cable is the only way to charge it away from a plug socket.

Compatibility

Only a TFSI e or e-tron badge plugs in. A petrol TFSI, diesel TDI or mild-hybrid A6 has no charging port. Trim level makes no difference to charging: Sport, S line, Black Edition and Vorsprung all use the same onboard charger. Note that the A6 TFSI e and the A6 e-tron are two completely different cars.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
