Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The 2025 A3 Sportback TFSI e accepts 11 kW on three phase. Reaching that at a workplace or public three-phase post takes a three-phase cable, and the 32A three phase is the one we sell, so it is the cable that gives the current car its maximum charge speed away from home.

Older A3, or home charging only? The 2020 to 2024 40 and 45 TFSI e are held to 2.9 kW and the 2014 to 2018 e-tron to 3.6 kW by their own onboard chargers, so the 16A cable (5m / 10m) is all either will ever use. On the 2025 car at a house, the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers the full 7.4 kW a single-phase supply can give.

Every Audi A3 plug-in hybrid sold in Britain has a Type 2 inlet, so the lead it wants is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. What separates them is how much power each will take: 3.6 kW on the 2014 to 2018 A3 Sportback e-tron, 2.9 kW on the 2020 to 2024 A3 40 and 45 TFSI e, and 11 kW on the current A3 Sportback TFSI e. All three numbers come from Audi's own press material. That does something unusual to the decision. On the two older cars the battery is small and the charger slow enough that every Type 2 lead we sell finishes inside one off peak window, and so does a 13 amp domestic socket. The cable is not what limits an A3 40 TFSI e. The car is. Only the 2025 model, with 19.7 kWh behind an 11 kW charger, moves quickly enough for a dearer lead to show up on the clock, which makes this the rare page where the cheapest option is the right answer for most readers.

Choosing an Audi A3 charging cable

Full speed on every A3 built before 2025: the 16A cable. Our menu lists it as 16amp (3.6kW) and it carries 3.7 kW, already above the 2.9 kW an A3 40 TFSI e will draw and level with the 3.6 kW charging capacity of the A3 Sportback e-tron. Nothing else in the range will charge either car faster. The buy for the 2025 car: the 32A single phase cable, sold as 32amp (7.2kW) and rated 7.4 kW. That is the ceiling a single phase supply puts on any home EV charger in Britain, and this lead carries all of it, filling the current A3 Sportback TFSI e from empty in 3 hours where the 16A needs 6. It is also the only rating we build in 15 metre and 20 metre lengths. Adds nothing on any A3 at a house: the 32A three phase cable, our 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). Its extra conductors want three live phases at the charging point to do anything, so on a driveway it behaves exactly as the single phase lead does. Plug the 2025 car into a workplace or a public three phase charging station and it will pull its full 11 kW and finish in 2 hours, the one place the money buys anything. The 2.9 kW and 3.6 kW cars will not notice it anywhere.

Length on an A3 turns on something no other car here does: where Audi put the socket. On the 2014 to 2018 A3 Sportback e-tron the charging connection sits behind the four rings in the radiator grille, dead centre at the nose of a 4.3 metre hatchback, so the lead always leaves from the front and 5 metres reaches a wallbox on either side of a nose in park. From 2020 Audi moved it to the front left wing, ahead of the driver's door on a UK car, so the socket is now near the front but committed to one side. Reverse onto a drive, or keep the wallbox on the offside wall, and the cable has to travel round the nose to get there, which is where 10 metres earns its keep. The 15 and 20 metre lengths suit a car left at the kerb, a garage set back from the house, or a shared bay where the post is fixed where you cannot park beside it. Audi does not publish the flap position for the newer cars, so check yours before ordering.

The Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, our 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option, earns more on an A3 than on nearly anything we stock. At 2.3 kW from a domestic socket it sits only 0.6 kW under the 2.9 kW ceiling of an A3 40 TFSI e, so a full charge takes 6 hours 30 minutes rather than 5 hours, and both of those land comfortably inside a single night. On the Sportback e-tron it is 4 hours 15 minutes against 2 hours 45 minutes. That makes a household plug a workable way to run either car rather than an emergency measure, and it is why an A3 owner is among the few who can reasonably delay fitting a wallbox. The 2025 car needs 9 hours 45 minutes the same way, which is where the 3-pin lead reverts to being a backup for a night away from home. It is sealed to IP67, built to IEC 62752, with a Type B RCD and adjustable current so an unfamiliar socket can be wound down.

The Q4 e-tron, Audi's compact electric car, is a different proposition with different figures, and it has its own Audi Q4 e-tron charging cable page; every lead we build for the marque is listed under Audi EV charging cables. On the paperwork: our Type 2 to Type 2 lead meets IEC 62196-2, is CE marked, seals to IP55 and holds its rating across a temperature range of -30C to +50C, while the 3-pin lead meets IEC 62752, is CE marked, seals to IP67 and covers -30C to +60C. Both use the same Type 2 connectors at the car end. Audi quotes 13.0 kWh and 8.8 kWh as gross capacity and does not publish a usable figure for either, so those two tables are worked on the full number and read slightly long; Audi's own quoted times are just over 4 hours and about 2 hours 30 minutes respectively. The A3 45 TFSI e is rated at 39 miles rather than 41, and the 2014 to 2018 car predates WLTP, so its 31 miles is an NEDC figure and optimistic. Every miles per hour number here shrinks on a cold night and on a fast road.

How do I charge an Audi A3 plug-in hybrid at home?

Plug an Audi A3 plug-in hybrid into a home EV charger with a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, or into an ordinary domestic socket with a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable. Those two leads are the entire charging system an A3 needs. A 2020 to 2024 A3 40 TFSI e takes 5 hours from empty on the wallbox and 6 hours 30 minutes on the socket. The 2025 A3 Sportback TFSI e takes 3 hours on a 7.4 kW home charger. Nothing about the trim, the wheels or the paint changes any of those numbers.

Which charging plug does an Audi A3 use?

Every Audi A3 that plugs in uses a Type 2 connector, from the 2014 A3 Sportback e-tron through to the current A3 Sportback TFSI e, so one Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable is compatible with all of them. The same lead works at untethered public charging stations, the common Type 2 post in UK car parks and streets, so it is the right cable at home and away. A petrol TFSI or diesel TDI A3 has no socket and needs no cable.

Does the 32A cable charge an Audi A3 40 TFSI e any quicker?

No. An Audi A3 40 TFSI e holds itself to 2.9 kW, so the 32A cable and the 16A cable both finish in 5 hours and the extra spend buys nothing at all. A 32A cable is backwards compatible and will work on 16A charging points, so the only reasons to choose it here are a future electric vehicle in the household or the 15 and 20 metre lengths, which we build in 32A single phase only.

Is the 22kW three phase cable ever worth it on an Audi A3?

Only on the 2025 A3 Sportback TFSI e, and only away from the house. That car accepts 11 kW where three live phases reach the charging point, taking a full charge down to 2 hours, which is worth having if you charge at work. A house is fed by one phase, so on a driveway that cable hands over 7.4 kW, exactly what the 32A single phase lead already delivers. On a 40 or 45 TFSI e and on the A3 Sportback e-tron it does nothing anywhere.

Can an Audi A3 run on a domestic socket instead of a wallbox?

On the older cars, yes. An Audi A3 40 TFSI e fills in 6 hours 30 minutes from a 13 amp socket against 5 hours from a wallbox, and the 2014 to 2018 Sportback e-tron in 4 hours 15 minutes against 2 hours 45 minutes, so both recover their whole electric range overnight either way. The 2025 A3 Sportback TFSI e needs 9 hours 45 minutes from a socket, which is longer than most off peak tariffs run, so that one does want a home charger.

Is 5 metres of cable enough for an Audi A3?

For most Audi A3 owners 5 metres is suitable. The A3 is a 4.3 metre hatchback with the socket at the front, in the grille on the 2014 to 2018 e-tron and on the front left wing from 2020, so a nose in park next to the wallbox is easily covered by 5 metres. Charging cables run from 5 metres to 20 metres here, and we recommend 10 metres if you reverse in, if the charger is on the far side of the car, or if the A3 lives on the road rather than a drive.

Compatibility

Only a TFSI e badge plugs in. A petrol TFSI or diesel TDI A3 has no charging port and cannot use any cable, mild hybrid versions included. Trim level makes no difference to charging: Sport, S line, Black Edition and S line Competition all use the same onboard charger. In the UK the A3 plug-in hybrid is Sportback only, there is no TFSI e Saloon.

The 2024 facelift changed this car substantially. The older A3 TFSI e charges at just 2.9 kW, so a 16A cable is all it can use. The 2025 car onwards has a much bigger battery and an 11 kW charger, so it benefits from the 32A cable. Check the year before you buy.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
