Product Description

EV Cable Shop recommendation

Type 2 to Type 2, 16A (5m / 10m)

A single phase British house holds every plug-in V90 to 3.7 kW, T8 Twin Engine and T6 Recharge alike. The 16A cable carries all of it for the least money.

Charging away from home too? The T6 Recharge of 2022 onwards holds a 6.4 kW charger that only wakes up on two live phases. Where a post supplies three, the three phase cable (5m / 10m) saves two hours on a full charge. The 32A single phase cannot reach it.

A plug-in Volvo V90 takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Two things decide which one you want: the year, and whether you ever charge anywhere other than home. For most owners the 16A cable is the whole answer.

That is because a British house is fed by one phase, and one phase holds any V90 to 3.7 kW. It is true of the 2017 T8 Twin Engine, of the T8 Recharge that followed, and of the T6 Recharge that replaced the T8 here in 2022. On your own driveway a dearer cable finishes the battery at exactly the same minute.

Away from home the 2022 cars are different. Volvo took the battery to 18.8 kWh and fitted a 6.4 kW charger, and that charger draws two live phases rather than one. At a three phase charge point the three phase cable lets the car take all 6.4 kW, turning a five hour charge into a three hour one. It is the only cable that does, and the 32A single phase is not a cheaper route to the same thing.

Earlier V90s cannot use any of it. The 10.4 kWh and 11.6 kWh cars are capped at 3.7 kW on every supply in the world, so the 16A is genuinely all they will ever take.

The V90 has been withdrawn from sale here, which makes this a used car page in practice. Estates get used as estates, so think about where the cable has to reach with the boot open and the tailgate up before you settle on a length. The flap is on the nearside front wing, 5m suits a matching side and 10m covers everything else.

The S90 T8 and V60 have their own pages and the Volvo charging cable range covers the rest. Built to IEC 62196-2, CE certified, IP55 sealed, rated from -30C to +50C, two year warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

Times come from Volvo's own charging figures for the 18.8 kWh battery. The 11.6 kWh T8 Recharge takes about three hours on the 16A cable and the 10.4 kWh Twin Engine about two and a half, and neither goes past 3.7 kW anywhere.

FAQs

Volvo V90 Charging Cable FAQs

Which charging cable does a Volvo V90 need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 16A for home use, whatever the year. Every plug-in V90 is limited to 3.7 kW by a single phase house supply and the 16A carries all of that. The three phase cable is worth adding only on a 2022 or later T6 Recharge, and only if you use three phase charge points.

Will a 22kW cable charge my V90 faster?

Not at home, where a single phase supply caps the car at 3.7 kW regardless. At a three phase charge point it will, but only on the 2022 onwards car, which has a 6.4 kW two phase charger. That drops a full charge from about five hours to about three.

What is the difference between the V90 T8 and T6 Recharge?

Volvo withdrew the T8 from the UK and replaced it with the T6 Recharge, which from 2022 carries the 18.8 kWh battery and the 6.4 kW charger. Charging is the only part of that which affects your cable choice, and both cars use the same Type 2 inlet.

Is the 32A single phase cable worth the extra on a V90?

No, not for this car. It is rated 7.4 kW but the V90 takes 3.7 kW from a single phase, so it finishes at the same time as the 16A. The only reason to buy it is a fully electric second car sharing the same wallbox.

Does a B5 or B6 V90 plug in?

No. Those are mild hybrids with no charging socket at all, and they top up their small battery from the engine. Only a T8 Twin Engine, T8 Recharge or T6 Recharge V90 takes a charging cable.

Compatibility

Only a T8 or T6 Recharge V90 plugs in. A B4, B5 or B6 is a mild hybrid with no charging port. Volvo withdrew the V90 T8 from the UK and replaced it with the T6 Recharge. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

That T6 arrived in 2022 with the 18.8 kWh battery and a 6.4 kW charger designed to pull two live phases at once. Behind a single phase house it comes back down to 3.7 kW, which is where every V90 below sits on a driveway. Buy the 16A for home. The three phase cable is the one that reaches 6.4 kW at a three phase post.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
