Product Description

The Volvo EX90 needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the 32A version is the one we would put in the boot. Every EX90 sold here is fully electric with a Type 2 inlet, and trim makes no difference to charging, so the only real decision is how much current the cable can carry. A 32A cable carries 7.4 kW, which is the most any home in this country can supply.

Volvo quotes 11 kW as the EX90's maximum AC charge speed. That figure is worth understanding before you spend money chasing it. Eleven kilowatts is a three phase rating, and British houses are fed by a single phase supply that stops at 7.4 kW. Your wallbox cannot exceed it, and neither can any cable. So at home an EX90 charges at 7.4 kW, and 11 kW only becomes available on a three phase charge point, typically at an office, a hotel or a commercial car park.

Two battery sizes are offered. The Single Motor holds 88 kWh usable from a 92 kWh pack. The Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance both hold 102 kWh usable from 106 kWh. These are large packs by any standard, and that shows in the numbers: from properly empty on a 32A cable the Single Motor takes around 13 hours 30 minutes and the Twin Motor around 15 hours 30 minutes. In daily use that is not the problem it sounds, because a seven seat SUV with this much capacity rarely arrives home flat. Most owners are replacing a day's driving, not a whole battery.

If you do have three phase power where you park during the day, the 32A three phase cable will let the car take its full 11 kW and pulls those times back to about 9 hours and 10 hours 30 minutes. It still works normally on a single phase home charger, so nothing is lost by owning one.

We would avoid the 16A cable on this car, since 3.7 kW turns even the smaller pack into more than a day's charging. The Type 2 to 3 Pin cable belongs in the boot for emergencies and nothing more, as 2.3 kW against 102 kWh is not a serious way to fill an EX90.

Which cable does the Volvo EX90 use?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and we recommend the 32A rating. All three EX90 versions, Single Motor, Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance, share the same Type 2 socket and the same 11 kW AC limit. Since a home supply tops out at 7.4 kW, the 32A cable delivers everything your charge point can give.

Can the EX90 really charge at 11 kW at home?

Not in a British house. The 11 kW quoted by Volvo is a three phase figure, and domestic supplies here are single phase with a 7.4 kW ceiling. Your car, your charger and your cable are all held to that. You would need a three phase charge point, usually at a workplace, to see 11 kW.

How long does an EX90 take to charge overnight?

Starting from empty on a 32A cable at 7.4 kW, the 88 kWh Single Motor takes about 13 hours 30 minutes and the 102 kWh Twin Motor about 15 hours 30 minutes. In practice you rarely start from empty, so a night on an off peak tariff usually restores far more than a day's driving.

Single Motor or Twin Motor, does the cable change?

No, both take the identical 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The difference is battery size, 88 kWh usable against 102 kWh usable, which affects how long a full charge takes rather than what you plug in. The Twin Motor Performance uses the same 102 kWh pack as the standard Twin Motor.

Is a three phase cable worth it for an EX90?

Only if you regularly park somewhere with three phase power during the day. There it lets the car draw its full 11 kW, cutting the Twin Motor from 15 hours 30 minutes to around 10 hours 30 minutes. On a home charger it behaves exactly like the standard 32A cable, so the extra cost buys nothing.

What length cable suits a Volvo EX90?

The EX90 is a long seven seat SUV, so think about where the socket sits once the car is actually parked. Five metres works with a wall unit alongside. Ten metres is safer for reversing into a garage or using public bays, and we stock 15m and 20m in 32A for larger properties.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
