Type 2 to Type 2, 32A three phase, 22 kW (5m / 10m)

The Volvo EX30 accepts up to 11 kW on AC. That is what the 22 kW cable is built for, and a workplace or commercial three-phase supply is where it pays the difference back.

Never charge anywhere but home? Then the extra phases have nothing to connect to. A domestic wallbox gives 7.4 kW and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers exactly that.

Every Volvo EX30 sold in the UK, from the first 2024 deliveries to the current Core, Plus, Ultra and Cross Country, takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, the lead Volvo's handbook calls a Mode 3 cable, and every one of them charges at 7.4 kW on a home wallbox. The onboard charger is 11 kW or 22 kW depending on trim, 11 kW on Core and Plus and 22 kW on Ultra, and that difference only shows at a three phase charge point. Volvo's UK price list fits the 22 kW charger as standard to Ultra, Ultra Black Edition and Cross Country Ultra, and the 11 kW unit to the rest. The battery underneath changes nothing about the rate: the 49 kWh Single Motor and the 65 kWh Extended Range and Twin Motor Performance draw the same current through the same cable. What the smallest Volvo does change is the overnight sum. The Single Motor's lithium iron phosphate pack is the chemistry normally run to a full charge rather than held at 80 percent, and at 49 kWh one night on the right cable takes it from flat to full.

Which Volvo EX30 charging cable to buy

Full speed at home on every EX30: the 32A single phase cable. The option is labelled 32amp (7.2kW); it carries 7.4 kW, the most a single phase house gives an EX30, Core or Ultra. On the 49 kWh Single Motor that is 7 hours 30 minutes from empty, so a night on an off peak tariff refills the LFP car completely, and on the 65 kWh Extended Range it is 10 hours, or about 238 miles from a seven hour window. Works, but no faster at home: the 32A three phase cable. Labelled 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), its value depends on the trim. On a Core or Plus it stops at the car's 11 kW. On an Ultra plugged into a 22 kW public AC post it takes 65 kWh from empty to full in 3 hours 15 minutes, against 6 hours 45 minutes for an 11 kW car and 10 hours at home. At a house it is a 7.4 kW cable like the other one. Too slow for either battery: the 16A cable. Labelled 16amp (3.6kW), it tells the car to draw no more than 3.7 kW once connected, so the Single Motor needs 15 hours from empty and the Extended Range 19 hours 45 minutes, and a seven hour cheap rate window puts back about 112 miles instead of about 224.

Length is settled by two facts: the EX30 is 4.23 metres long, the shortest car Volvo sells, and you will find the charging flap on the rear nearside. Reverse onto a drive with the wallbox on the house side and 5 metres reaches with slack. The catch is that Volvo's UK price list shows a 5 metre 32A Type 2 cable as standard on every EX30, so a 5 metre from us earns its place as a spare, or on a used car that arrived without one. The length most EX30 owners actually need is the 10 metre, which takes the daily wear while the Volvo lead stays in the boot: it covers nose in parking, a wallbox on the offside wall, and the small car parked second on a two car drive. The 15 metre and 20 metre versions, made in 32A single phase only, are for a charger on a detached garage or across a shared courtyard.

What Volvo does not include is a cable for a household socket. Its UK support pages call Mode 2 charging from a domestic socket an emergency method rather than a recommended daily one, with the Mode 3 lead the recommended way to charge, and sell the Mode 2 cable as an accessory, so an EX30 arrives able to use a wallbox or a public post and nothing else. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, labelled 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW), fills that gap: 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket, about 10 miles of range for every hour plugged in, an in-line box carrying a Type B RCD to protect against earth faults, and a dial that drops the draw to 6 amps where the wiring is old or the socket is shared. A full charge from empty on it is 24 hours for the 49 kWh car and 32 hours for the 65 kWh ones. It is the second cable an EX30 owner buys, not the first.

The next size up, the EX40, shares a page with the car it used to be called, at Volvo XC40 charging cable, and every lead we make for the brand is listed under Volvo charging cables. The Type 2 to Type 2 cable is an IEC 62196-2 lead with CE marking, with IP55 sealing to protect the plugs against dust and rain, and rated for temperatures from -30C up to +50C. The Type 2 to 3-Pin cable follows IEC 62752, is CE marked, carries IP67 sealing to protect a control box that lies on the ground, and works across a wider temperature range of -30C to +60C. Both carry a 2 year manufacturer's warranty, delivery to any UK address is free and next working day, and a cable of the wrong length can go back free within 30 days.

The Cross Country, on sale since 2025, uses the 65 kWh battery and the same chargers as the trim it is based on, with Volvo quoting up to 300 miles for the Single Motor Extended Range version and up to 265 miles for the Twin Motor. Note that the usable capacities of 49 and 65 kWh are Volvo's own figures from the UK price list, and read the range figures as the top of the WLTP span the manufacturer publishes for each powertrain, so a car on larger wheels sits a little below the table. Once the heater is running in January, or the car has spent an hour at motorway speed, the miles per hour comes in under these numbers.

What type of charging port does the Volvo EX30 use?

The Volvo EX30 has a Type 2 port for AC charging, on the rear nearside of the car, and takes a Type 2 to Type 2 cable at home and at public posts. Every EX30 charges at 7.4 kW on a single phase wallbox, because that is the ceiling of a UK house supply rather than of the car. Away from home the trim decides. Core and Plus cars have an 11 kW onboard charger, while Ultra, Ultra Black Edition and Cross Country Ultra have a 22 kW charger as standard, so only an Ultra can use the full output of a 22 kW three phase post.

What is the best Type 2 charging cable for a Volvo EX30 at home?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the recommended buy for a Volvo EX30 on a home wallbox, whichever battery or trim it has, because no single phase house can touch the car's 11 kW. It carries the full 7.4 kW a single phase supply provides, refills a 49 kWh Single Motor in 7 hours 30 minutes and a 65 kWh Extended Range in 10 hours, and works with any untethered wallbox including Ohme, Zappi, Hypervolt and Pod Point units.

Should an EX30 Ultra owner buy the 22 kW three phase cable?

Only if the EX30 Ultra regularly parks at a 22 kW three phase AC post, at work or in a car park. There the three phase cable fills the 65 kWh battery in 3 hours 15 minutes instead of 6 hours 45 minutes on an 11 kW cable, a saving no other EX30 trim can make. On a home wallbox the same cable delivers 7.4 kW, exactly what the cheaper 32A single phase cable delivers, so an Ultra that only charges at home spends money for nothing.

Which charging cables come with a new Volvo EX30, Mode 3 or Mode 2?

A Mode 3 cable only. Volvo's UK price list shows a 5 metre 32A three phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable as standard on every EX30 level, from Core to Cross Country Ultra. A Mode 2 cable for a household socket is not included; Volvo's UK support pages list the Mode 2 cable as an accessory bought separately. A used Volvo EX30 may arrive with neither, so check the boot floor before ordering, and check any cable you find there for signs of wear at the plugs before relying on it.

Is one night on a cheap tariff enough to fill a Volvo EX30?

For the 49 kWh Single Motor, nearly: seven hours at 7.4 kW on the 32A cable puts about 46 kWh into a Volvo EX30, which is a flat battery taken to roughly 93 percent and about 224 miles of WLTP range added. The 65 kWh Extended Range and Twin Motor take 10 hours from empty, so a seven hour window returns about 238 miles or 224 miles respectively, comfortably more than a day's driving. On the 16A cable the same seven hours adds about 112 miles to any version.

Is a 5 metre cable long enough for a Volvo EX30?

For a Volvo EX30 reversed onto a drive with the wallbox on the nearside, yes, because the charging flap is at the rear nearside of a 4.23 metre car and the run is short. Volvo already supplies a 5 metre cable, though, so the length worth buying is usually 10 metres, which reaches a wallbox on the far wall, a nose in space, or the second position on a shared drive. 15 and 20 metre versions are for a garage or charger some distance from where the car stops.

Compatibility

Every EX30 is fully electric and takes a Type 2 cable. Trim level makes no difference to charging: Core, Plus and Ultra all use the same onboard charger.

The Extended Range and Twin Motor can be optioned with a 22 kW charger. That only pays off on a three-phase supply. On a normal single-phase UK home wallbox every EX30 charges at 7.4 kW.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

    This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
