Product Description

Every Skoda Octavia iV and Octavia vRS iV sold in the UK shares one set of charging hardware: a 13 kWh battery holding 10.4 kWh usable, a Type 2 inlet, and an onboard charger Skoda rates at 3.6 kW. That makes the Skoda Octavia charging cable decision a short one, because a 16A Type 2 to Type 2 lead already carries more than the car will accept. There is no model year to check and no trim to look up, which is rare on a plug-in hybrid. Skoda opened UK order books in October 2020, took the plug-in Octavia off the price list at the end of 2022 while components were scarce, and has not brought the iV badge back; the facelift is sold here on petrol and diesel alone. Every Octavia iV on a British road is therefore a 2020 to 2022 build, hatch or estate, in SE Technology, SE L or vRS trim, all charging at one rate. The iV and the vRS iV are the only Octavia PHEV models Skoda has sold here; the e-TEC mild hybrid, the TSI and the TDI have no charging flap, so nothing here fits one.

Which Skoda Octavia iV charging cable to buy

The lead that uses everything the car has: the 16A cable. Sold here under the label 16amp (3.6kW), it meets the Octavia iV's 3.6 kW ceiling exactly, filling the 10.4 kWh pack from empty in 3 hours 15 minutes and putting back roughly 15 miles of electric range an hour. Skoda quotes 3 hours 30 minutes for the same job from a 16 amp supply, and nothing else here improves on it. The same clock at a higher price: the 32A single phase cable, our 32amp (7.2kW) option. It can carry 7.4 kW, but the onboard charger stops at 3.6 kW, so a full charge still lands at 3 hours 15 minutes. Buy it for a reason other than speed: the 15 and 20 metre lengths are built in this rating alone, and a 32A lead follows you into a future electric car. Nothing to use, at any site: the 32A three phase cable. Its two additional power cores stay dead until a socket feeds them three live phases, and a house is fed by one. What sets the Octavia iV apart is that a real three phase supply changes nothing either: its charger is a single phase 3.6 kW unit, so a 22 kW public post hands the car what the wallbox at home does. It is the one cable with no scenario behind it.

With the rating settled, length is the only variable left, and it begins at the flap. Skoda's UK launch material places the Octavia iV's Type 2 socket on the passenger side front wing, the nearside on a right hand drive car, and both bodies measure 4.69 metres nose to tail. That layout rewards a nose in park with the charge point on the left, where a 5 metre lead has coil to spare. It punishes the reverse: back the estate in, or fit the box to the offside wall, and the lead must clear the whole length of a car bought for its boot, which is when 10 metres earns its keep. Plenty of Octavia iVs now live at a kerb, and a shared bay, a garage set back behind the house or a post two spaces along is where the 15 metre and 20 metre cables belong. Measure the route with the car where it usually stands, second vehicle included.

An Octavia iV left the factory carrying both of the leads it needed. Skoda UK's launch release lists a 16 amp Mode 3 wallbox cable and a 10 amp three pin mains cable as standard equipment, kept in a dedicated compartment under the boot floor. Several owners later that compartment is often empty, or holds one lead of the two, which is why most people read this page. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable replaces that one. It is a Mode 2 lead, our 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option, and the item people are after when they search for a granny charger. It pulls 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13 amp socket, takes the battery from empty in 5 hours and returns about 10 miles an hour, so on a pack this small it is a working charger, not an emergency measure: plug in after dinner and the Octavia iV is full before bed, with no wallbox involved. A Type B RCD sits in its control box, and the current dial winds back to 6 amps for an older garage circuit that would rather not hold 10 amps all evening.

The Type 2 to Type 2 seals to IP55, is made to IEC 62196-2, carries the CE mark and works from -30C to +50C. The Type 2 to 3-Pin seals tighter at IP67, is CE marked to IEC 62752 and holds up from -30C to +60C. A 2 year manufacturer's warranty covers each of them, UK delivery is free and next working day, and a free return runs to 30 days if the reach turns out short.

Skoda publishes the pack as 13 kWh gross and 10.4 kWh net, and the times above are worked from the net figure with an allowance for charging losses, which is why they sit a quarter of an hour under the 3 hours 30 minutes Skoda quotes. January mornings and a steady motorway cruise both take a bite out of the miles per hour column.

What is the right charging cable for a Skoda Octavia iV?

A 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Two questions settle this purchase, the rating and the length, and the car fixes the first of them: the Skoda Octavia iV plug-in hybrid has a 3.6 kW onboard charger, the 16A lead is rated to carry 3.7 kW, and the two meet with nothing left over, so a full charge of the 10.4 kWh battery takes 3 hours 15 minutes and about 15 miles of electric range go in per hour. The same answer covers the hatch and the estate, every trim from SE Technology to vRS, and every build year, because Skoda never offered a faster charger on this car.

Would a 32A cable charge a Skoda Octavia iV any quicker?

No. A 32A single phase cable can pass 7.4 kW, but the limit on a Skoda Octavia iV lives inside the car at 3.6 kW, so the extra power has nowhere to go and both cables finish a charge in the same 3 hours 15 minutes. There are two honest reasons to order the 32A version anyway: our 15 metre and 20 metre cables are only made in that rating, so a long run has to be 32A, and the lead will still be useful on a future electric car with a bigger onboard charger. Speed is not one of the reasons.

Does a three phase cable do anything for an Octavia iV?

No, and unusually that is true at every location rather than just at home. The Skoda Octavia iV has a single phase 3.6 kW onboard charger, so even where three live phases reach the socket, at a workplace bay or a 22 kW fast charger on a public AC post, the car still accepts 3.6 kW and finishes in 3 hours 15 minutes. On a plug-in hybrid with an 11 kW charger the three phase cable at least earns something away from home, but on an Octavia iV there is no site in the country where it charges the car faster. Whichever rating you choose, the Type 2 to Type 2 lead is a Mode 3 cable, so it is also the one to carry for untethered public Type 2 posts as well as the wallbox at home.

Is the vRS iV any different to charge?

Only in the range figure. The Skoda Octavia vRS iV plug-in hybrid makes 245PS against the standard iV's 204PS, but it uses the same 13 kWh battery, the same Type 2 inlet and the same 3.6 kW onboard charger, so it takes the same 16A cable and the same 3 hours 15 minutes from empty. Skoda rates the vRS iV at up to 39 miles of electric range against 43 for the standard car, which works out at about 14 miles put back per hour instead of 15.

Should an Octavia iV owner order a 5 metre or a 10 metre lead?

Five metres if the Skoda Octavia iV parks nose in and the charge point is on the nearside, because the socket sits in the passenger side front wing and the run is short. Ten metres if the car reverses onto the drive, if the box is on the far wall, or if the estate shares the space with another vehicle, since the lead then travels the 4.69 metre length of the car and back across the drive. Anything further out, such as a communal bay or a garage away from the house, is a 15 metre or 20 metre job. A longer cable adds reach and nothing else, since charging speed on a Skoda Octavia iV is set by the car.

Can an Octavia iV run on a three pin socket alone?

Yes, comfortably. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable gives a Skoda Octavia iV 2.3 kW from a standard 13 amp socket and fills the 10.4 kWh battery from empty in 5 hours, which is an evening rather than a whole night, and adds roughly 10 miles of range an hour. Owners without a wallbox can run the car on electricity this way every day, and owners who do have one keep the lead in the boot for hotels and relatives' driveways. The control box has a Type B RCD built in and the current can be dialled down to 6 amps where the circuit is old.

Compatibility

The Octavia iV is a plug-in hybrid with a small battery and a slow charger, and knowing that saves you money. Its onboard charger is 3.6 kW, so a 16A cable will charge it in about three and a half hours and a 32A cable will not make that any quicker. There is no rapid charging. Two things worth knowing beyond that. The vRS iV is the same car mechanically, 245PS rather than 204, and charges identically. And the Octavia plug-in was withdrawn from UK sale in 2022 during the component shortages and never came back, so no new Octavia PHEV is available today. The e-TEC is a mild hybrid with no charging port.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
