Type 2 to Type 2, 32A single phase (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m)

The Range Rover Sport accepts up to 7 kW on AC. A British home supply is single phase and stops at 7.4 kW, so this is the fastest charge the car can accept anywhere. A three-phase cable has no extra phases to use and costs more for nothing.

The battery in the Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid has more than doubled since 2018 and the onboard charger has stayed at about 7 kW throughout. That single fact drives the whole Range Rover Sport charging cable decision. The original P400e carried 13.1 kWh and could be filled in an evening on almost anything. The current car carries 38.2 kWh, of which 31.8 kWh is usable, and now behaves like a small electric car that has to be charged overnight rather than topped up before dinner.

Both generations plug in through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Land Rover puts the flap on the nearside front wing, ahead of the driver's door on a UK car, which is worth confirming on your own vehicle before you measure for length.

Choose the 32A single phase cable. A 22 kW lead needs three phases coming into the building, and domestic supplies in Britain carry one, which caps any house at 7.4 kW. That is already above what the Range Rover Sport asks for, so the three phase cable would arrive at the same time as the cheaper one every single night. It only becomes interesting if you also charge a genuinely three phase capable car at a commercial site.

The 16A cable is the one to avoid on the newer car. It drops the rate to 3.7 kW and takes a full charge from 5 hours 15 minutes to 9 hours 45 minutes, and it costs 8 miles of recovery every hour. For a car this heavy, the cheaper lead turns a single evening top up into an all nighter.

The 3-pin lead earns its place the first time you park somewhere without a wallbox. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable runs at 2.3 kW off a standard household socket, worth about 5 miles an hour on the current car, so an overnight stay at a hotel or a relative's house returns around 40 to 50 electric miles. Land Rover has never published a usable capacity for the P400e, so its times are calculated from the 13.1 kWh gross figure and are a slight overestimate. In cold conditions and at higher speeds the real figure drops.

Which charging cable is right for a Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid?

The 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 lead is the one to buy. Both plug-in Range Rover Sport generations accept about 7 kW of AC, which is exactly what that cable delivers from a UK wallbox, and neither one can use anything faster.

Is the 22kW three phase cable worth paying for on a Range Rover Sport?

No. A Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid is limited to roughly 7 kW by its own charger, and a British house cannot exceed 7.4 kW in any case, so the three phase lead finishes at the same moment as the cheaper one. It is only worth owning if you charge a different, faster car at a three phase site.

How long does the current Range Rover Sport plug-in take to charge at home?

About 5 hours 15 minutes from empty on a 32A cable, or 9 hours 45 minutes on a 16A one. The 31.8 kWh usable battery is roughly two and a half times the size of the old P400e pack, which is why the newer car has to be charged overnight rather than in an evening.

Does the older P400e charge at the same speed?

Yes, at about the same rate but for far less time. A Range Rover Sport P400e holds 13.1 kWh and fills in around 2 hours on a 32A cable, so it can be brought back to full between getting home and going to bed. Its 3.7 kW figure on a 16A lead still gets it done in about 4 hours.

What length of cable does a Range Rover Sport need?

This is a 4.95 metre car with the charging flap on the nearside front wing, so a 5m lead only works when the wallbox is on the same side of the drive as the flap and reasonably close to the front of the car. Park with the offside towards the wall, or reverse in, and 10m is the safe choice.

Can a Range Rover Sport plug-in use public charge points?

Yes on AC. Public untethered Type 2 posts accept the same cable you use at home, and the current Range Rover Sport plug-in also has a 50 kW DC socket for rapid charging, which needs no cable of your own. The older P400e is AC only.

Compatibility

The same split applies here as on the full-size Range Rover, and it is the most important thing on this page. The L494 P400e of 2018 to 2022 has a 13.1 kWh battery, a 7 kW Type 2 charger and no rapid charging. The L461 of 2022 onwards has a 38.2 kWh battery and 50 kW DC rapid charging, which is genuinely rare on a plug-in hybrid and means you can top it up on a motorway. For your cable it makes no difference: both are Type 2 at 7 kW, so a 32A cable is right for either. And Land Rover's badge rule holds throughout: the lower-case e is the plug. A P400 without the e is a mild hybrid with no socket.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
