Product Description

An MG S5 EV charging cable has to work to around 7 kW, single phase, which is where this car's onboard AC charger stops. Published figures land variously on 7, 7.2 and 7.4 kW, so treat 7 kW as the working number rather than picking a decimal that sources disagree on. What every source does agree on is that the charger is a single-phase unit and that 11 kW is not available on any trim. The 47.1 kWh and 62.1 kWh batteries both accept power at that same rate.

The reason this page exists is what MG now leaves out of the boot. An S5 EV is handed over with a Type 2 to Type 2 lead for wallboxes and public posts, and nothing whatsoever for a household socket. MG has stopped including the three-pin granny charger it once supplied, something owners and UK reviewers have been reporting since the car reached showrooms in April 2025. If you have collected one and found a single cable bag instead of two, nothing has been forgotten. That is the current specification.

Every UK MG S5 EV uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, Type 2 for AC and CCS2 for DC. There is no hybrid or petrol S5, so every car wearing the badge plugs in, which was not true of the MG ZS line-up this model replaces.

This is a car to buy the plain 32A cable for. Our 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable carries 7.4 kW, comfortably more current than the S5 EV will ever draw, so it hands over the full 7 kW and fills the 62.1 kWh Long Range battery in about 10 hours. The 32A three-phase cable costs more and returns nothing at all here, and the reason is worth stating precisely: this is not about your house having one phase instead of three. The S5 EV's charger is itself a single-phase device. Park it at a 22 kW three-phase post with the expensive lead in your hand and the car still takes 7 kW and still needs its 10 hours. No supply anywhere in the country makes that cable pay on this model.

Dropping to a 16A cable costs real time on the bigger pack. At 3.7 kW the Long Range S5 EV wants 19 hours from empty against 10, and adds about 18 miles an hour instead of about 34. A five hour off-peak slot is the difference between roughly 170 miles and roughly 90. The Standard Range car suffers less, 14 hours 30 mins against 7 hours 30 mins, but that is still the wrong side of a single night.

Which brings this back to the empty space in the boot. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable is the item MG has stopped providing, and buying one restores the car's ability to take a charge from any 13A socket at 2.3 kW, worth around 11 miles an hour on the Long Range. It is not a way to run the car day to day. It is what covers the fortnight between collection and the wallbox appointment, a night at a cottage with a socket in the outbuilding, or a driveway where the wallbox has tripped and nobody is coming until Monday. Sealed to IP67, adjustable between 6A and 12A for tired wiring.

MG's other electric cars ask different things of a lead. The MG ZS EV is the car the S5 EV succeeds, the MG5 estate sits alongside it, and the full MG charging cable range gathers the lot together.

Length follows the flap, which three separate sources put on the rear nearside wing, back left viewed from behind the car. Pulled forward into a driveway, that corner ends up the best part of four and a half metres from the front bumper and further still from a wallbox mounted by the front door, so 10m is the sensible default and 5m only really works if you reverse in and the box sits near the back of the car. Take a second measurement while the granny cable is doing the work, from the parking spot to the nearest 13A socket, which is often in a garage on the wrong side of the house. That, and shared parking, is what 15m and 20m are for. Build standard: IEC 62196 Type 2, CE certified. IP55 sealing on the Type 2 to Type 2 lead and IP67 on the 3-Pin. Working range -30C to +50C, or +60C for the 3-pin. Warranty is 2 years, manufacturer's, and UK delivery is free next working day.

Hourly mileage in the Long Range table uses the SE's 298 mile WLTP certification; the Trophy's larger wheels bring that to 288 miles, roughly three per cent lower across every row. Expect lower figures in winter and on long fast runs.

What is missing from an MG S5 EV when it is delivered?

The three-pin granny charger. An MG S5 EV arrives with a Type 2 to Type 2 lead only, because MG has stopped supplying the domestic-socket cable that used to come with its electric cars. Nothing in the boot will connect the car to a normal 13A socket until you buy a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable separately, which catches out owners waiting on a wallbox installation.

What cable should an MG S5 EV owner buy?

An MG S5 EV owner should buy a 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and most should add a Type 2 to 3-Pin lead because the car no longer comes with one. The 32A rating covers the roughly 7 kW the S5 EV's onboard charger accepts with headroom to spare, and works unchanged on untethered public AC posts.

Is the three-phase cable a waste of money on an MG S5 EV?

Yes, entirely. An MG S5 EV has a single-phase onboard charger rated at around 7 kW, so a 22 kW three-phase cable cannot make it charge any faster in any location, including a workplace or public post that genuinely has three phases available. The 62.1 kWh battery takes about 10 hours from empty on either lead. Spend the difference on the three-pin cable MG left out instead.

Do the MG S5 EV batteries charge at different speeds?

No, both MG S5 EV batteries charge at the same rate, because the SE Standard Range and the Long Range cars share one onboard charger of around 7 kW. Only the finishing time moves: 7 hours 30 mins from empty for the 47.1 kWh pack and about 10 hours for the 62.1 kWh pack. Trim level has no bearing on which cable to order.

How much range does an MG S5 EV gain in one cheap-rate window?

A Long Range MG S5 EV picks up roughly 170 miles across a five hour off-peak window on a 32A cable, at about 34 miles for every hour connected. The Standard Range car gains about 155 miles in the same five hours, close to three quarters of its 211 mile WLTP figure. Use a 16A cable and those five hours return about 90 miles instead.

What cable length suits an MG S5 EV?

Ten metres suits most MG S5 EV owners. The charge flap is on the rear nearside wing, so a car parked nose in leaves that socket at the far end from a wallbox by the door, while reversing in brings it close. Worth measuring twice on this car: once to the wallbox, and once to whichever indoor socket you will be using for the three-pin cable in the meantime.

No petrol or hybrid S5 exists, so anything wearing this badge plugs in and both rows want the same lead. Published ratings for the onboard charger scatter across 7, 7.2 and 7.4 kW, which is why around 7 kW is the honest number to work from; a 32A cable clears that with current to spare and brings the bigger pack home in roughly ten hours. Paying extra for three phases achieves nothing on this model, and the reason is not your house wiring: the charger inside the car is itself a single-phase device, so a 22 kW post feeds it exactly what a driveway does. Do budget for a three-pin lead instead, because MG has stopped putting one in the boot.

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
