The MG HS Plug-in Hybrid accepts up to 6.6 kW on AC. The 2020 to 2024 car is 3.7 kW and the 2024 on car is about 6.6 kW. The 32A single-phase cable meets that figure exactly. Anything dearer adds capacity the onboard charger will simply refuse.

An MG HS charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable on every MG HS Plug-in Hybrid sold in the UK, the MG HS PHEV in owner shorthand, from the 2020 Excite and Exclusive to the current SE and Trophy. What changed with the new car in late 2024 is the speed it will accept: the 2020 to 2024 HS charges at 3.7 kW, the current HS at 6.6 kW, and neither reaches the 7.4 kW a UK home wallbox can supply, so on both generations the car sets the pace rather than the house. MG's launch figures for the first car: 16.6 kWh, a 3.7 kW onboard charger, 32 miles of electric range. MG UK now quotes 24.7 kWh, 23.2 kWh usable, up to 75 miles WLTP, behind a 6.6 kW charger. Both use the Type 2 connector that is standard in the UK. One badge, two chargers, and the year on the V5C decides which cable is money well spent.

MG HS charging cable: the year decides the amperage

Full speed at home on a late 2024 on HS: the 32A single phase cable. Sold under the option 32amp (7.2kW), it can carry 7.4 kW, and the current HS draws 6.6 kW through it, everything its onboard charger accepts, so the 23.2 kWh battery fills from empty in about 4 hours and gains roughly 21 miles of electric range per hour on the wallbox. This is the first HS on which the 32A lead saves real time. Full speed at home on a 2020 to 2024 HS: the 16A single phase cable. Its option label is 16amp (3.6kW); it delivers 3.7 kW, the ceiling of the first generation charger, so the 16.6 kWh battery is full in about 5 hours and nothing dearer shortens that by a minute. A 32A lead on the older HS is a purchase for the next car, not this one. Too slow for the new battery: the 16A cable on a late 2024 on HS. Held to 3.7 kW, the current car needs about 7 hours instead of 4 and recovers about 12 miles an hour instead of 21, the gap between full by teatime and not. Works, but no faster on either car: the three phase 32A cable. Sold as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it costs the most of the four, and both HS chargers are single phase units, so it hands the current car 6.6 kW and the older car 3.7 kW wherever it is plugged in, a works car park with a genuine three phase supply included. The extra pins have nothing on the MG side to talk to. Whichever amperage you pick, the same lead is your own cable at untethered public posts.

Length turns on the flap, and the two generations appear to put it on opposite corners. MG's UK owner's manual for the current HS places the charging port door at the rear left of the car with the fuel filler at the rear right. The owner's manual for the 2020 to 2024 car puts its charging flap at the rear right, though owner reports differ, so check your own car before ordering. The current HS is 4.67 metres long, the earlier car about 4.6. Reverse in with the wallbox on the flap side and 5 metres covers it with cable left over. Drive in nose first, or put the wallbox on the far wall, and the cable must run the whole length of an SUV and around its tail, which is the job a longer cable exists for; 10 metres does it. 15 and 20 metres, 32A only, suit a detached garage, a shared drive or a kerbside charge outside a terrace.

Check the boot before assuming a lead is included. MG HS PHEV owners with 2020 to 2024 cars report a 3 pin charging lead from MG and no Type 2 to Type 2 cable; owners of the current SE and Trophy report the reverse, a Type 2 to Type 2 cable and no three pin lead. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, the granny charger, draws 2.3 kW from a standard household 13 amp socket through a control box with a Type B RCD and a current setting that can be turned down to 6 amps for an older circuit. It refills a first generation HS from empty in about 8 hours 15 minutes, comfortably inside a night's parking. On the 23.2 kWh current car the same lead needs about 11 hours 30 minutes, so it is the cable for a weekend away rather than the daily routine.

MG gives 16.6 kWh for the first generation battery and no usable figure, so the second table is worked on the full 16.6 kWh; owners who have logged a charge from flat put the usable figure nearer 15 kWh, which means the real car finishes about half an hour sooner than shown. The 6.6 kW rating for the current HS is the figure carried by UK road tests and the owners' forum, since MG UK's page gives the battery and the range but not the charger, and a few owners read a little over 7 kW on a wallbox display; the first table uses 6.6 kW. A cold battery in January and a stretch of dual carriageway will each trim the range column.

Is the 32A Type 2 charging cable worth paying for on an MG HS PHEV?

On an MG HS Plug-in Hybrid registered from late 2024, yes: the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable lets the 6.6 kW onboard charger run flat out, so the 23.2 kWh battery fills in about 4 hours on a 7 kW home wallbox against 7 hours on a 16A lead. On a 2020 to 2024 HS Plug-in Hybrid, no: that car's charger stops at 3.7 kW, the 16A cable carries 3.7 kW, and the 32A cable finishes in the same 5 hours. The only reason to buy 32A for the older HS is a plan to replace it with a car that can use the extra.

How do I tell whether my MG HS has the 3.7 kW or the 6.6 kW charger?

Two checks settle it on an MG HS Plug-in Hybrid. The trim badge: Excite or Exclusive is the 2020 to 2024 car with the 3.7 kW charger, SE or Trophy is the late 2024 on car with the 6.6 kW charger. The quoted electric range: MG rated the 16.6 kWh car at 32 miles and rates the 24.7 kWh car at up to 75 miles, so the figure in your handbook or on the original order form gives the generation away. The flap position is a third clue, rear left on the new car according to MG's UK manual, but treat it as confirmation rather than proof.

Why is the 22kW three phase cable a waste on an MG HS?

Because no MG HS PHEV has a three phase charger, whichever year the vehicle left the factory. The current car's 6.6 kW unit and the older car's 3.7 kW unit are both single phase, so the three phase cable delivers 6.6 kW or 3.7 kW respectively wherever it is plugged in, exactly what the cheaper single phase cable delivers. That holds on a driveway and it holds just as firmly at an office or retail park post fed by three genuine phases.

How many miles does an MG HS PHEV add per hour of charging?

About 21 miles of electric range an hour on a late 2024 on MG HS Plug-in Hybrid using the 32A cable at 6.6 kW, about 12 miles an hour on the 16A cable, and about 7 miles an hour from a three pin socket at 2.3 kW. On the 2020 to 2024 HS the figures are about 7 miles an hour on any Type 2 cable and about 4 miles an hour on the three pin lead, because that vehicle carries a smaller battery and a slower charger. In practice both cars are full well inside a seven hour off peak window on their best cable.

Did my MG HS Plug-in Hybrid come with a wallbox cable or a 3 pin lead?

It depends on which generation of MG HS Plug-in Hybrid you have, going by what UK owners report, since MG UK publishes nothing on the subject. A 2020 to 2024 MG HS Plug-in Hybrid typically arrived with a 3 pin lead for a household socket and no Type 2 to Type 2 cable, so the wallbox cable is the one to buy. A late 2024 on SE or Trophy typically arrived with a Type 2 to Type 2 cable and no three pin lead, so the Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, compatible with the same Type 2 connector on the car, is the missing piece. A used HS of either age may have lost both.

Which side is the MG HS charging flap on, and what length does that mean?

Rear left on a late 2024 on MG HS Plug-in Hybrid according to MG's UK owner's manual, and rear right on the 2020 to 2024 car according to its manual, which is worth checking against your own car. On a 4.67 metre SUV that side matters: with the wallbox on the flap side and the car reversed in, a 5 metre cable does it, while a wallbox on the opposite side, or a habit of driving in nose first, sends the lead the full length of the car and calls for 10 metres. Choose 15 or 20 metres for a detached garage or a shared parking area.

Compatibility

Only the versions badged Plug-in Hybrid take a cable. The HS petrol and the HS Hybrid+ are self-charging and have no socket at all, which is worth checking before you order, because Hybrid+ is a recent badge and looks like it should plug in. MG's own naming is actually reliable here: Hybrid+ means self-charging, Plug-in Hybrid means a Type 2 cable, EV means Type 2 plus rapid charging. On the plug-ins, the charger nearly doubled with the new car in 2024. If yours is the older 2020 to 2024 HS, its charger is only 3.7 kW, so a 16A cable is genuinely all it can take, whatever charge times you may have seen quoted elsewhere. Neither generation has rapid charging.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
