The MG 5 accepts up to 6.6 kW on AC. A 32A single-phase lead delivers that figure in full, which is why it is the one we recommend. The three-phase cable would be money spent on capacity the car cannot take.

Every MG5 EV sold in Britain charges through a Type 2 inlet in the front grille, so an MG5 charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable and the 32A single phase version is the right one on all of them, from the 2020 launch car to the last Long Range estates registered in 2025. The onboard charger did not stay still across those five years. Any MG5 built before July 2022 accepts 6.6 kW and stops there. The facelift launched that summer carries an 11 kW charger that draws the full 32 amps from a single phase, which is why owners of late cars watch about 6.4 to 7 kW going in at home. Nobody sells a new MG5 now, so every reader of this page owns a used one, and the registration date is what tells you which charger sits behind that badge.

Choosing an MG5 charging cable: what the 2022 facelift changed

Right on every MG5: the 32A single phase cable. Our menu lists it as 32amp (7.2kW) and it carries 7.4 kW, more than any MG5 will ask for, so it saturates the onboard charger whichever estate you own. Home charging is where an MG5 spends most of its life, and this is the lead we recommend because it delivers everything the onboard charger will take. A facelift Long Range fills from empty in 8 hours 45 minutes and gains about 32 miles of range an hour, a 2021 or 2022 Long Range takes 9 hours 45 minutes at about 29 miles an hour, and the original 52.5 kWh car is done in 8 hours 15 minutes. Worth buying only for a facelift car that visits a three phase post: the 32A three phase cable. Listed as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it is the dearest of the four options and it changes nothing on a driveway, where a single phase supply is all an MG5 sees and the car takes the same 7.4 kW from it as from the cheaper lead. Plug a July 2022 on facelift into a workplace or car park post fed by three live phases and this cable hands it 11 kW, which brings a full charge down to 6 hours. Do the same with a pre-facelift MG5 and the car holds at 6.6 kW, because its charger has nowhere to put the other two phases. The lead to skip on an estate this size: the 16A cable. Labelled 16amp (3.6kW), its 3.7 kW stretches a Long Range to 17 hours 30 minutes and cuts the return to roughly 16 miles an hour, so a seven hour off peak window is worth about 112 miles rather than 224. All three also serve untethered Type 2 posts in public car parks.

Cable length here is decided by the grille rather than by the boot. MG placed the MG5 charge flap in the centre of the nose behind the badge, on a car 4.54 metres long, and that reverses the usual estate advice. Drive forward towards the wallbox and the run is short, which is exactly what the 5 metre cable is for. Reverse onto the drive, as owners of a load carrier tend to do, and the lead has to travel back down the whole flank of the car, so 10 metres is the size to order. The 15 metre and 20 metre cables, single phase 32A only, answer a charger on the house wall with the car across a shared yard or at the far end of a long front garden. Pace out the route the cable actually takes rather than the gap in a straight line.

Look in the boot of a used MG5 before assuming anything is in there. MG shipped the car with a 3 pin granny cable and treated the Type 2 to Type 2 lead as an extra, so buyers on the Affinity scheme found both in bags in the boot while everyone else was quoted around 190 pounds at the dealer, and after two or three owners a 2021 estate often turns up with neither. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable stands in for the missing granny lead: 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket, near enough 10 miles of range an hour on any MG5, a Type B RCD inside the control box and current adjustable between 6 and 12 amps for an older outbuilding circuit. Usable capacities and the 214 and 250 mile figures come from EV Database, the trim level WLTP figures for the facelift from Auto Express. The 11 kW rating is MG's own from the July 2022 launch material, and facelift owners have confirmed their cars pull 32 amps through a lead with only one phase wired, which is what puts 7.4 kW in the home column. Every miles per hour figure above shrinks on a frosty morning and on a long motorway leg, so treat the range column as a guide rather than a fixed result.

Does a 2022 or newer MG5 charge any quicker at home than an early one?

Yes, by about an hour. The July 2022 facelift MG5 EV Long Range takes 7.4 kW from a single phase home charger and fills from empty in around 8 hours 45 minutes, where the same battery in a 2021 or early 2022 car is held to 6.6 kW and needs about 9 hours 45 minutes. Both need the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable to reach those times, and neither will manage them on a 16A lead. Start the charge as the off peak window opens and either car is finished inside the cheap hours.

Is the three phase cable ever worth buying for an MG5?

Only for a facelift MG5 that regularly uses a three phase charge point. From July 2022 the MG5 EV carries an 11 kW three phase charger, so at a workplace or car park post with three live phases the 32A three phase cable takes a full charge down to 6 hours from the 8 hours 45 minutes a home supply allows. On a driveway it does nothing the single phase cable does not already do, and on any MG5 built before that facelift it does nothing anywhere. Three phase supplies are rare outside workplaces and industrial units, so for most owners the single phase lead is the one to buy and the 11 kW figure never comes into it.

How can I tell which onboard charger my MG5 has?

Go by the registration date on the V5C. An MG5 EV first registered from around August 2022 onwards is a facelift car with the 11 kW charger on board, wearing the redesigned nose, the closed off grille panel and the 10.25 inch centre screen. Anything registered earlier, including the 61.1 kWh Long Range launched in July 2021 and the 52.5 kWh launch car, has the 6.6 kW single phase unit. The battery is the same 61.1 kWh on both Long Range estates, so capacity is no guide at all. Whether the V5C calls your vehicle an MG 5 EV or an MG5, the Type 2 connector and the cable that fits it are identical.

Does a used MG5 come with a Type 2 charging cable?

Often not. MG supplied the MG5 EV with a 3 pin granny cable as standard and sold the Type 2 to Type 2 lead separately at around 190 pounds, with owners buying through the Affinity scheme reporting both cables in the boot and other buyers getting only the granny lead. A car on its second or third owner may have lost both, so check before the wallbox is switched on rather than after. Bear in mind that an MG5 charged twice a week still needs its own Type 2 cable for public AC charge points, because most of them are untethered.

Will a 5 metre cable reach an MG5 with the socket in the grille?

It reaches whenever the MG5 is parked nose towards the charger, because the inlet sits in the centre of the front bumper rather than on a rear wing. Reverse the 4.54 metre estate onto a drive to load the boot and the cable has to run the length of the car to get back to the nose, and that is the case for 10 metres. A wallbox fitted round a corner or on the opposite side of a shared parking area is what the 15 and 20 metre cables are for. All of them are sealed to IP55, which keeps water out where the lead rests on the drive, so the longer lengths are safe to leave outside between charges.

How much range does an MG5 gain over a cheap rate night?

About 224 miles across a seven hour off peak window on a facelift MG5 EV Long Range with the 32A single phase cable, and roughly 203 miles on a pre-facelift Long Range or the 52.5 kWh car. That covers a full charge from a quarter full on any of them. Swap to the 16A cable and the same seven hours return about 112 miles, which is where the cheaper lead stops making sense on a car used every day.

Compatibility

The MG5 is a full electric estate, so there is no self-charging version to confuse it with. Every UK car is Type 2 with CCS rapid charging. The charger changed with the Long Range facelift in 2022: the original 52.5 kWh MG5 has a 6.6 kW single-phase charger, and the 61.1 kWh Long Range from 2022 has an 11 kW three-phase charger. On a British home supply both charge at around 7 kW, so a 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right lead for either car. The 32A three-phase cable only pays on a 2022 onwards car, and only at a three-phase public post where it reaches the full 11 kW.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

    A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
