Product Description

A Mercedes GLA 250e charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead taking 7.4 kW on UK cars built to 2023 and 11 kW three phase on 2024 production onwards, and unlike most plug-in hybrids this is a cable that gets handled every single day. The GLA 250 e is the short-range one. Mercedes certifies the earlier car at 35 to 39 miles of electric driving and the later one at 43 to 45, and owners report less again. That is not a car you charge once a week. It is a car you plug in most nights and quite often top up again in the afternoon.

Which changes what you should be buying for. A lead that lives permanently coiled in a garage can be any lead. A lead that comes out and goes back three hundred times a year, in the rain, in February, needs to still be flexible when it is cold and still be sealed when it is old. Our Type 2 to Type 2 cable is rated to work down to -30C and carries an IP55 seal for exactly that reason, and the TPU sheath stays supple at temperatures where cheaper PVC goes stiff and starts to fight you. Coil it the same way every time, loosely and from the car end, and it will lie flat for years instead of taking a permanent kink.

The socket position matters for the same reason. Every GLA 250 e carries its Type 2 inlet at the offside rear, low down on the bodywork, behind a flap that locks and unlocks along with the rest of the car. Low is the operative word. The connector ends up at about knee height, so a cable stretched tight hangs off the inlet all night and drags on the sill every morning. Ordering enough length that the lead can rest on the ground in a loose loop is not an upsell, it is the difference between a connector that still clicks home in year five and one that does not.

On speed, take the 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable. A house is supplied with a single phase and a wallbox on it produces 7.4 kW, which this cable passes through complete. From empty that is 1 hour 45 minutes on a pre-facelift GLA 250 e and 3 hours 45 minutes on a 2024 on car, using Mercedes' own published wallbox times. The 16A cable pins either car to 3.7 kW and roughly doubles both figures, to 3 hours 30 minutes and 7 hours 30 minutes. On a battery you are refilling nightly that saving buys you an extra couple of hours of waiting, every night, forever.

The three-pin lead is the one to keep in the boot rather than on the wallbox. At 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket a pre-facelift GLA 250 e is full in about 5 hours 45 minutes and a 2024 on car in about 12 hours, which makes an ordinary socket a workable overnight charge when you are staying somewhere without a charge point. It seals to IP67, carries a Type B RCD inside the control box, and its output can be turned down anywhere from 12 amps to 6 where the house wiring is old.

Now the identification, and the GLA has a shortcut nothing else in the Mercedes range offers. On 2020 to 2023 UK cars, Exclusive Edition, Exclusive Edition Premium and Exclusive Edition Premium Plus were GLA 250 e trims and nothing else. If a car of that vintage wears an Exclusive Edition badge, it is a plug-in hybrid. That is the reverse of the usual rule, which is that trim names tell you nothing about a powertrain, and it makes buying a used one much easier. The shortcut stopped working at the facelift, when the 250 e moved on to AMG Line Executive, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus, names it now shares with petrol and diesel GLAs.

Otherwise the badge is the test. Across the H247 range only the GLA 250 e has a charging socket. A GLA 180, GLA 200, GLA 250, GLA 200 d, GLA 220 d 4MATIC, AMG GLA 35 or AMG GLA 45 S has no inlet anywhere on it, and current GLA petrols are 48 volt mild hybrids, which are electrified but do not plug into anything. There is now a GLA 250+ with EQ Technology as well, a fully electric car with an 85 kWh battery and a CCS socket, so check for the plus sign before you order.

Times come from Mercedes' published wallbox figures rather than from battery arithmetic, and note that they do not fall as the rating rises: the 2024 on GLA 250 e is quoted at 3 hours 45 minutes on a single-phase wallbox where the earlier car is quoted at 1 hour 45 minutes. No usable capacity is published for the later car. Range is given as a band because wheel size moves it materially on this body. Expect lower figures in winter and on long fast runs.

What cable should a Mercedes GLA 250e owner buy?

A 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable, in the length that reaches comfortably rather than the length that just reaches. It carries the full 7.4 kW a domestic wallbox can produce, which is all any Mercedes GLA 250 e can take at a house, and it is the lead you will be plugging in most evenings given the car's 35 to 45 mile electric range. It works on public untethered Type 2 posts too.

Is an Exclusive Edition GLA a plug-in hybrid?

On a 2020 to 2023 Mercedes GLA, yes. Exclusive Edition, Exclusive Edition Premium and Exclusive Edition Premium Plus were sold on the GLA 250 e alone in that period, so the trim badge is a reliable shortcut for identifying a plug-in car of those years. It stopped being reliable at the facelift, when the GLA 250 e switched to AMG Line Executive, AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus, which petrol and diesel GLAs also wear. Look for the lower-case e on the tailgate on any car from 2024 onwards.

How often will I actually be plugging a Mercedes GLA 250e in?

Most nights, and often a second time during the day. A Mercedes GLA 250 e carries 10.6 kWh of usable battery on 2020 to 2023 cars, certified at 35 to 39 miles, so an ordinary day of driving empties it. That is why the cable is worth choosing carefully on this car rather than treating it as a box to tick: it is a daily-use item, exposed to weather, coiled and uncoiled constantly, and the 32A lead refills the battery in 1 hour 45 minutes so a top-up between trips is realistic.

Will a three-phase cable help a Mercedes GLA 250e?

Only at a three-phase supply, which for most owners means a workplace car park rather than home. A 2020 to 2023 Mercedes GLA 250 e cannot exceed 7.4 kW anywhere, so a three-phase lead does nothing for it at all. A 2024 on car will draw its full 11 kW at a proper three-phase point and finish in 1 hour 15 minutes, but on a driveway it charges at exactly the same rate as the cheaper 32A single-phase cable.

Does every Mercedes GLA plug in?

No. Only the Mercedes GLA 250 e has a charging socket. The GLA 180, GLA 200, GLA 250, GLA 200 d, GLA 220 d 4MATIC, AMG GLA 35 and AMG GLA 45 S have no inlet, and current GLA petrols are 48 volt mild hybrids that recover energy on their own and never need a cable. Separately, the GLA 250+ with EQ Technology is a fully electric GLA with an 85 kWh battery and a CCS socket, which is a different car again.

What length of cable suits a Mercedes GLA 250e?

Enough that the lead can lie slack on the ground rather than pull on a connector sitting low on the offside rear of the Mercedes GLA 250 e. Pace out the route the cable takes around the car, not the diagonal across the parking space, and add for the drop from a wallbox mounted at chest height. 5m covers a unit fitted on the same side and within a couple of paces. 10m is what most owners settle on once the car has been parked a few different ways. 15m and 20m suit a garage the car sits outside, an allocated bay away from the house, or a post shared with a neighbour.

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
