A Mercedes CLA 250e charging cable is a Type 2 to Type 2 lead, and the figure it has to carry depends on when your C118 was built: 7.4 kW on UK cars up to mid-2023, and 11 kW three phase on facelift cars from July 2023 production. That reads like a straight upgrade. On a British driveway it is the opposite. Mercedes quotes the earlier CLA 250e at 1 hour 45 minutes from 10 to 100 percent at a wallbox, and quotes the facelift car at 1 hour 15 minutes on an 11 kW three-phase station but 3 hours 45 minutes on a 7.4 kW single-phase one. Two cars that are almost impossible to separate in a used advert, and the newer one spends about two extra hours on the drive.

So what this page settles is not what fits. It is which side of mid-2023 your car falls on, because that is what decides the value of the cable. The connector itself never varies: every CLA 250e charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. Its socket is at the offside rear, meaning the side facing traffic rather than the kerb, under a flap of its own that has nothing to do with the fuel filler and is released by pressing the back edge so it swings forward.

Order the 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable whichever car you have. A home wallbox on a domestic supply has 7.4 kW to give, this cable passes all of it, and no CLA 250e can be handed more than that at a house. On the pre-facelift car 7.4 kW is also the onboard charger's own ceiling, so it is already working flat out. On the facelift car the 11 kW rating comes into play only at a genuine three-phase site, in practice a workplace bay or a 22 kW street post, and Mercedes puts that charge at 1 hour 15 minutes.

The 16A cable is a false economy here. Held to 3.7 kW, a pre-facelift CLA 250e stretches from 1 hour 45 minutes out to 3 hours 30 minutes and banks about 13 miles an hour rather than 25. A facelift car goes from 3 hours 45 minutes to 7 hours 30 minutes, which no off-peak tariff window covers, and its hourly gain falls to about 7 miles. With a battery this small the entire point is finishing before the cheap rate ends.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable deserves a place in the boot as well. Pulling 2.3 kW from a 13 amp socket it refills a pre-facelift CLA 250e in about 5 hours 45 minutes and a facelift car in about 12 hours, so an ordinary household socket is a genuine overnight charge on this size of battery rather than a gesture. Its current can be set anywhere between 6 and 12 amps for older house wiring, and a Type B RCD sits inside the control box.

Read the boot lid before ordering, because the badges here are unusually close together. On the C118 only the CLA 250 e has a socket: the CLA 180, 200, 250, 220 d, AMG 35 and AMG 45 S have none, and one lower-case letter is all that separates 250 from 250 e. Trim narrows it further on UK pre-facelift cars, where the 250 e came only as AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus, so a car wearing plain AMG Line is not one; facelift cars added AMG Line Executive alongside those two. Two more traps sit on the current nameplate. The CLA 250+ with EQ Technology is a battery electric car with an 85 kWh pack and a CCS socket, one character away from 250 e and needing an entirely different lead. And the words with EQ Technology are not proof that a car plugs in, because Mercedes also applies them to 48 volt mild hybrids that carry no socket anywhere on the body.

Capacity and range follow the generation too. Pre-facelift cars hold 15.6 kWh gross, of which 10.6 kWh is usable, and are certified at 43 to 44 miles as a Coupe or 42 to 43 as a Shooting Brake. Facelift cars keep the same 15.6 kWh headline with no usable figure published, and are certified at 46 to 53 miles as a Coupe or 45 to 52 as a Shooting Brake. UK cars left the factory with two leads as standard: a Mode 2 five-metre lead for a domestic socket at up to 2.3 kW, and a Mode 3 lead for wallboxes and public points. Mercedes gives that Mode 3 lead as four metres in one of its own tables and five in another, so treat it as four or five metres depending on build. Mercedes also calls it optional at platform level while Mercedes UK folded it into the 250e's standard specification, and both of those statements are true, which is why the only reliable check on a used car is to open the boot and look.

Both tables are anchored on Mercedes' own published wallbox times rather than worked back from capacity, because the published figures do not scale from battery size in the way you would expect, and Mercedes gives no usable capacity for the facelift car. Shooting Brake range runs a mile or two under the Coupe on either generation. The figure drops in winter and at motorway pace.

Which cable fits a Mercedes CLA 250e?

A Mercedes CLA 250e takes a Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, and the 32A single-phase version is the right buy on both generations. It hands over the full 7.4 kW that a home wallbox on a domestic supply can produce, which is all the pre-facelift car can accept and all the facelift car can accept at a house. The same lead plugs into untethered public Type 2 posts, which expect the driver to bring their own.

Why does a facelift Mercedes CLA 250e charge more slowly at home than the older one?

Because that is what Mercedes publishes. The facelift Mercedes CLA 250e is quoted at 1 hour 15 minutes on an 11 kW three-phase station and 3 hours 45 minutes on a 7.4 kW single-phase one, while the 2020 to mid-2023 car is quoted at 1 hour 45 minutes from 10 to 100 percent. A house in Britain supplies one phase, so the facelift car lives on the 3 hours 45 minutes figure and the earlier car on the 1 hour 45 minutes one. We print both as Mercedes states them and offer no theory about the cause.

How do I tell a CLA 250 e from a CLA 250?

By the lower-case e on the boot lid, which on a C118 Mercedes CLA is the only marker that the car plugs in. A CLA 250 is a petrol car with no charging socket, as are the CLA 180, CLA 200, CLA 220 d, AMG CLA 35 and AMG CLA 45 S. Trim gives a second check on 2020 to mid-2023 UK cars, where the 250 e was offered only in AMG Line Premium and AMG Line Premium Plus. If there is no flap on the offside rear wing, no cable on this page will connect to it.

Do I need the 22kW cable for a Mercedes CLA 250e?

Not for home charging on any Mercedes CLA 250e. Behind a domestic wallbox that cable moves 7.4 kW, the same as the cheaper 32A single-phase lead, and a pre-facelift car cannot exceed 7.4 kW anywhere at all. It is worth the extra only to an owner of a facelift car who regularly parks at a real three-phase supply, where the 11 kW charger cuts a full charge to 1 hour 15 minutes.

Can a Mercedes CLA 250e be charged from a household socket?

Yes, and on a Mercedes CLA 250e it works better than it does on most plug-in cars. Measure to the offside rear quarter of the Mercedes CLA 250e, following the route the lead will genuinely take rather than the shortest line across the drive. The flap opens forwards, so the cable lies along the flank of the car instead of standing proud behind it, which matters where a wallbox is mounted low or close to a wall. 5m suits a unit fitted within a stride or two of that quarter panel. 10m is the size that copes when the nose points at the wallbox or the kerb is on the wrong side, since the lead then has to run past the whole car first. 15m and 20m exist for a detached garage, a shared bay, or a post at the top of a long drive.

Both generations of the Mercedes CLA 250 e use the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable, so the build date changes the timing rather than the purchase. Mercedes quotes 1 hour 45 minutes at a wallbox for the earlier car, and for the facelift car 1 hour 15 minutes on an 11 kW three-phase station against 3 hours 45 minutes on a 7.4 kW single-phase one. A British home supply reaches 7.4 kW, which the 32A single-phase cable carries in full on either car.     A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
