Product Description

The Mazda MX-30 takes 6.6 kW AC, the lowest onboard charging rate of any electric car we write about. Mazda withdrew the MX-30 from the UK range during 2025, so almost everyone buying a cable for one now is a second or third owner, often working out what the original supplying dealer did or did not hand over with the car.

The MX-30 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The inlet is a CCS Combo 2 on the rear right wing, and the round Type 2 portion at the top is where an AC cable connects. There is no Type 1 version of this car, so if a private seller hands you a Type 1 lead it did not come with the MX-30.

Because the car's own charger caps at 6.6 kW, the MX-30 is the rare case where the limit sits in the vehicle rather than in your house. Most electric cars accept 11 kW and are held to 7.4 kW by a single phase domestic supply. The MX-30 cannot reach even 7.4. A 32A single phase cable will feed it 6.6 kW, which is everything it can take, and a 22 kW three phase cable would deliver exactly the same 6.6 kW for more money. Three phase is genuinely pointless on this model.

The 32A single phase lead is still the one to buy. It fills the 35.5 kWh battery in about 6 hours and returns roughly 23 miles of range an hour. Step down to a 16A cable and the rate falls to 3.7 kW, stretching a full charge to 10 hours 45 minutes and halving the miles per hour to about 13. Given the MX-30's modest 124 mile range, losing half your charging speed hurts more here than it would on a long range car, because there is less buffer to absorb a night when charging did not finish.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable works genuinely well on this car. At 2.3 kW it fills the MX-30 in about 17 hours 30 minutes, and because the battery is small, an ordinary overnight stint on a household socket returns a useful 60 to 70 miles. For a used MX-30 owner without a wallbox yet, a three pin lead is a real interim charging solution rather than a token gesture.

Mazda also sold the MX-30 R-EV, which pairs a much smaller 17.8 kWh battery with a rotary petrol generator and gives around 53 electric miles. If your car has a fuel filler as well as a charging flap, it is the R-EV and its charging times are far shorter than the ones below.

Mazda gives 35.5 kWh for the pack and never separates out the usable portion, so the times here rest on the full number and a real charge will end a little earlier. Note also that Mazda's own UK charging table implies a slightly higher rate than the 6.6 kW quoted at launch, so treat 6.6 kW as the conservative figure. Expect lower figures in winter and on long fast runs.

What cable does a Mazda MX-30 need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable, and the 32A single phase version is the right pick. The Mazda MX-30 accepts 6.6 kW, the 32A cable carries that comfortably, and a full charge takes about 6 hours.

My used MX-30 came without a cable. What am I missing?

Most Mazda MX-30s were supplied with a Type 2 to Type 2 Mode 3 cable for wallbox and public post charging. A three pin Mode 2 cable was not always included. Since the MX-30 left the UK price list in 2025, replacements are no longer a dealer item for many owners, and buying a 32A Type 2 to Type 2 lead restores the car to how it was sold.

Is the three phase cable a waste of money on an MX-30?

Yes. The Mazda MX-30 is limited to 6.6 kW by its own onboard charger, which is below what a single phase supply already provides. A 22 kW three phase cable therefore charges an MX-30 at precisely the same speed as a 32A single phase one. There is no scenario, at home or at a public post, where the extra phases help this car.

How is the MX-30 R-EV different for charging?

The Mazda MX-30 R-EV carries a 17.8 kWh battery instead of 35.5 kWh, roughly half the size, plus a rotary petrol generator to extend its range. It gives about 53 miles on electricity and refills far more quickly than the battery electric MX-30. Both cars use the same Type 2 to Type 2 cable.

What length of cable suits an MX-30?

The Mazda MX-30 is a compact crossover at just over 4.4 metres, and its charging flap is on the rear right wing. Owners who reverse onto a driveway with the wallbox on the right will manage on 5m. Drive in forwards and that flap sits at the far end of the car from the wall, where 10m removes the problem. The rear hinged back doors do not affect cable routing, but leave room to open them.

How much range does an MX-30 gain in one cheap rate window?

A seven hour off peak period on a 32A single phase cable puts about 160 miles into a Mazda MX-30, which is more than the car can hold, so the battery fills and stops. That is the useful thing about a small battery: one cheap rate window always covers a full charge, provided the cable is not holding the car back.

Compatibility

Two MX-30s exist and, counter-intuitively, the plug-in hybrid charges faster on AC than the full electric car. The MX-30 electric has a 6.6 kW onboard charger. The MX-30 R-EV, which uses a small rotary engine as a generator, has a 7.2 kW charger and, unusually for a plug-in hybrid, DC rapid charging at 36 kW. Both are Type 2, so a 32A cable is right for either. One number worth correcting: the electric MX-30 is sold as a 35.5 kWh car, but that is the gross figure and you actually use about 30 kWh, which is why its range is modest. Note also that UK cars were built with the 6.6 kW single-phase charger; an 11 kW three-phase version exists in other markets.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
