Product Description

For a Kia Optima PHEV, buy the Type 2 to Type 2 16A cable. The onboard charger in this car is rated at 3.3 kW, and 16A carries 3.7 kW, so a 16A lead already gives the car more than it can take. Everything above that is money spent on capacity the Optima cannot use.

Before anything else, make sure yours actually plugs in. Most Optimas sold in Britain were the 1.7 CRDi or 2.0 CRDi diesel, and there was a 2.0 T-GDi Optima GT petrol as well. None of those have a charging port or a battery to fill, so no cable on this page fits them. Only cars badged PHEV plug in.

Two plug-in versions were built. The Optima PHEV saloon ran from 2016 to 2019 with a 9.8 kWh battery. The Optima Sportswagon PHEV followed from 2017 to 2020 with a slightly larger 11.26 kWh pack. Both share the same Type 2 inlet and the same 3.3 kW charger, so the estate simply takes half an hour or so longer to fill. Trim level changes nothing.

From flat, the saloon takes around three and a quarter hours and the Sportswagon around three and three quarters. Those are short sessions by any standard, which is the point of a plug-in hybrid: you top up while the car sits, and the battery is back before you next need it.

We stock the 32A cable and the three phase 32A cable for this car and they will both plug in safely, but neither shortens a charge by a single minute, because the car's own charger sets the pace. The three phase one is doubly pointless at home, since British houses run on a single phase supply that stops at 7.4 kW regardless.

A Type 2 to 3 Pin cable is a fair companion buy. At 2.3 kW it refills the saloon in about four and three quarter hours and the Sportswagon in around five and a half, so an ordinary socket at a relative's house or a rented cottage is a real option rather than a compromise.

Choose 5m if the charge point sits close to where you park and 10m if you need slack. Type 2 to Type 2 cables are IP55 rated, Type 2 to 3 Pin cables are IP67, and all of them include a 2 year manufacturer's warranty and free next working day UK delivery.

What cable does a Kia Optima PHEV need?

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable in the 16A version. Both plug-in Optimas use a Type 2 inlet and a 3.3 kW onboard charger, and 16A supplies 3.7 kW, comfortably above what the car will draw. That covers the 9.8 kWh saloon and the 11.26 kWh Sportswagon equally.

Will a 32A cable charge my Optima quicker?

No. The limit is the car, not the lead. With a 3.3 kW onboard charger, the saloon completes in about 3 hours 15 minutes and the Sportswagon in about 3 hours 45 minutes whichever Type 2 cable you plug in. A 32A cable is safe and compatible, just heavier and dearer for the same result.

How long does an Optima PHEV take to charge?

Roughly 3 hours 15 minutes from empty for the 9.8 kWh saloon and 3 hours 45 minutes for the 11.26 kWh Sportswagon, both at 3.3 kW. Drop to a three pin lead at 2.3 kW and those become about 4 hours 45 minutes and 5 hours 30 minutes respectively.

Does the Kia Optima diesel need a charging cable?

No. The 1.7 CRDi and 2.0 CRDi diesels and the 2.0 T-GDi Optima GT petrol have no battery pack and no charging socket, so there is nothing to plug in. Only cars wearing the PHEV badge, the saloon and the Sportswagon, can use anything listed on this page.

Is the saloon cable the same as the Sportswagon one?

Yes. Both bodystyles use an identical Type 2 inlet and the same 3.3 kW charger, so a single 16A cable serves either. The only difference is battery size, 9.8 kWh in the saloon against 11.26 kWh in the estate, which adds about half an hour to a full charge.

What length Optima charging cable should I buy?

Five metres covers a home wallbox mounted near the parking space. Ten metres is worth the extra if the car sits at the far end of a driveway or you rely on public bays. We also list 15 metre and 20 metre 32A cables, though the Optima has no need of that reach at home.

Compatibility

Only an Optima badged PHEV plugs in. The mainstream UK Optima was a 1.7 CRDi diesel, and there was also a 2.0 T-GDi Optima GT petrol. Neither has a charging port.

The Optima PHEV has a 3.3 kW onboard charger, so a 16A cable is all it can use. A 32A cable will fit and work but charges no faster. Trim level makes no difference.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
