Product Description

The Jeep Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid takes 7.2 kW AC, and a 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable fills its 11.4 kWh battery from empty in about 1 hour 45 minutes. First though, work out which Compass you have, because Jeep now uses the 4xe badge on two completely different cars.

The Compass 4xe sold from 2021 to 2025 is the plug-in hybrid this page is written for: a 1.3 petrol engine, an 11.4 kWh battery and around 22 miles of electric range. The Compass launched in 2025 reuses 4xe for something else entirely, a full electric all wheel drive model with a 103 kWh battery and an 11 kW three phase onboard charger. Both take a Type 2 cable, but the charging maths could hardly be more different: one is done in under two hours, the other takes most of a night.

Either way the answer to the connector question is the same. Every Jeep Compass that plugs in uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The plug-in hybrid has no DC rapid charging capability at all, so AC is the only route into its battery.

That last point is what makes the cable choice matter more on this car than on an EV. An electric car owner who buys the wrong cable can still fall back on a rapid unit. A Compass 4xe owner cannot, because the car physically has no rapid charging pins. Whatever cable you own is the entire charging system for the electric half of the drivetrain.

For the plug-in hybrid a 32A single phase cable is the right buy, and there is no reason to look at three phase. The car caps at 7.2 kW, which a single phase UK supply provides in full, so the extra phases in a 22 kW cable would have nothing to connect to and would not shave a minute off the charge. A 16A cable halves the rate to 3.7 kW and stretches the same charge to about 3 hours 30 minutes. On a battery this small that is still workable overnight, but it costs you the ability to top up meaningfully during a short evening stop.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable makes particular sense on a plug-in hybrid. At 2.3 kW it fills the Compass 4xe in about 5 hours 30 minutes, which is an ordinary night on a standard socket with no wallbox involved. Because the battery is small, the three pin lead is a realistic everyday charger here rather than the emergency option it would be on a large EV, and it means a weekend away still runs on electricity for the local trips.

Jeep publishes 11.4 kWh without separating gross from usable capacity, so real times will be a little shorter than shown. Jeep has also quoted the electric range as both 22 and 30 miles WLTP across different price lists, with 33 miles in city driving. Winter temperatures and motorway cruising will both reduce it.

Which Jeep Compass 4xe do I have?

If your Jeep Compass 4xe was registered between 2021 and 2025 and has a petrol engine, it is the plug-in hybrid with an 11.4 kWh battery. If it is a 2025 car or newer with no engine at all, it is the full electric Compass 4xe with a 103 kWh battery. Both use a Type 2 charging cable, but the electric one takes roughly five times as long to charge and can accept 11 kW rather than 7.2 kW.

What cable should a Compass 4xe owner buy?

Is the three phase cable a waste of money on a Compass 4xe?

Yes, on the plug-in hybrid. The Jeep Compass 4xe accepts a maximum of 7.2 kW and that is a single phase figure, so a 22 kW three phase cable delivers exactly the same charge in exactly the same time while costing more. The picture changes on the newer full electric Compass, which has an 11 kW three phase onboard charger and would use the extra capacity where a three phase supply exists.

Can a Compass 4xe use a public rapid charger?

No. The Jeep Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid has an AC Type 2 inlet only, with no DC pins, so rapid units cannot connect to it. Every charge the car ever takes comes through a Type 2 cable, which is why owning a decent one matters on this model.

What length cable suits a Jeep Compass?

Look for the inlet on the nearside front wing of the Jeep Compass, forward of the door. At roughly 4.4 metres nose to tail, a Compass parked front first towards the wallbox is served easily by a 5m lead. Back it in instead and the socket finishes up at the opposite end of the car from the wall, which pushes you to 10m. Shared driveways where you cannot guarantee the same bay each night point the same way.

How much electric range does one hour of charging give a Compass 4xe?

About 14 miles an hour on a 32A single phase cable, which covers the Jeep Compass 4xe's full electric range in well under two hours. On a three pin lead the figure is closer to 4 miles an hour. Because the battery only holds 11.4 kWh, even the slow option refills the car overnight without difficulty.

Compatibility

Three different Compasses have been sold here and only two of them charge. The Compass 4xe is a plug-in hybrid with a Type 2 socket, and on the Compass the 4xe badge does mean plug-in. The Compass e-Hybrid is a 48V mild hybrid with no charging port, and the petrol and diesel Compass likewise have nothing to plug into. From 2025 there is also a full electric Compass Electric. Be careful with the 4xe badge across the Jeep range as a whole: on the newer Avenger it means mild hybrid rather than plug-in, which is the opposite of what it means here.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
