Product Description

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 takes 11 kW AC, a three phase rating that becomes 7.4 kW at a British home, and a 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable hands the car every watt of it.

Every Hyundai Ioniq 6 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, plugged into the Type 2 section of the CCS Combo 2 inlet on the rear right wing.

What sets the Ioniq 6 apart from other cars charging at the same rate is what it does with the energy. It is one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars on sale, with a drag coefficient of 0.21, and that shows up directly in charging maths. An hour on a 32A single phase cable is worth about 32 miles to an Ioniq 6. The same hour, on the same cable, at the same 7.4 kW, gives a Kia EV9 roughly 26 miles. The cable is identical. The car simply travels further on what it receives.

That efficiency is why the 32A single phase cable is such a strong buy here. A seven hour overnight off peak window returns around 225 miles to an Ioniq 6, which is two thirds of the car's 338 mile range recovered while you sleep. Very few owners will ever need to think about charging beyond plugging in at night.

The flip side is that a 16A cable wastes the car's biggest advantage. At 3.7 kW the Ioniq 6 gains about 16 miles an hour, so the same overnight period returns roughly 110 miles. Buying the cheaper lead for a car chosen partly for its efficiency is a strange combination, and the difference in price is small next to what it costs you in charging throughput over a year.

A 22 kW three phase cable is held to 11 kW by the Ioniq 6 and needs a three phase supply to reach it. Houses in Britain are wired with one phase, so a three phase cable will charge your Ioniq 6 at exactly 7.4 kW on the drive, the same as the cheaper single phase lead. Where three phase does exist, at a workplace or business unit, the car reaches about 48 miles an hour.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable is a sensible companion at 2.3 kW and around 10 miles an hour. Thanks to the car's efficiency, an overnight stint on a standard socket returns 80 to 100 miles, which is a genuinely useful amount on a long trip where the destination has no charge point.

Hyundai quotes battery size rather than usable capacity, so both tables are worked from the total and real charges finish a little sooner. Hyundai's own documents give the onboard charger as both 10.5 kW and 11 kW, which is the same hardware quoted at two reference voltages. Both cold weather and sustained high speeds cut this figure.

Which charging cable suits a Hyundai Ioniq 6?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable is the best match for a Hyundai Ioniq 6. It supplies the full 7.4 kW a UK home can provide and, because the Ioniq 6 is unusually efficient, returns around 32 miles of range for every hour it is plugged in.

Why does the Ioniq 6 gain more miles per hour than other cars?

Because it is more efficient. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has a drag coefficient of 0.21 and travels further on each kilowatt hour than most electric cars, so the same 7.4 kW charging rate converts into more miles. Slightly. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 N uses an 84 kWh battery against 77.4 kWh in the standard car, and Hyundai lists its onboard charger at 10.5 kW. It also covers fewer miles per charge at 302, so each hour on a 32A cable is worth about 27 miles rather than 32.

What cable length works best for an Ioniq 6?

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is a long saloon at around 4.85 metres with the charging flap on the rear right wing. Backing onto a driveway alongside a wallbox on the right means 5m is fine. Parking nose in leaves the flap almost five metres from the wall, where 10m saves a lot of manoeuvring, and street parked owners should think about 15m.

How much range does an Ioniq 6 gain in one cheap rate window?

Around 225 miles, using a 32A single phase lead across a seven hour cheap rate stretch, which amounts to roughly two thirds of a full charge. Drop to a 16A lead and a Hyundai Ioniq 6 collects about 110 miles in the same time.

Compatibility

Every Ioniq 6 is fully electric and takes a Type 2 cable. The 53 kWh Standard Range battery was never sold in the UK: every UK car has the 77.4 kWh pack. Trim level makes no difference to charging.

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
