Product Description

The Hyundai Inster charging cable decision is more forgiving than it is on most electric cars, because this is a small city car rather than a family SUV. The Inster accepts 10.5 kW on AC, and it does so on every trim and on both batteries, so the 42.0 kWh and 49.0 kWh packs differ in how long they take rather than in how hard they pull.

Every Hyundai Inster charges through a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The inlet is at the front of the car on the nearside, the left front corner as you stand behind it, and the same socket handles CCS for DC. Type 2 has been the AC standard here since the Inster went on UK sale in January 2025.

You will find two different AC numbers quoted for this car. Hyundai's press material rounds the onboard charger up to 11 kW, while Hyundai's own UK Tech and Spec Guide states 10.5 kW. We quote 10.5 kW because that is the published specification. At home the argument is academic, since a British domestic supply cannot feed the car anything close to either figure.

Both of those figures describe three-phase power. A house in Britain has a single phase, which pins the Inster to 7.4 kW whatever cable is attached, and our 1-Phase, 32A cable passes that whole 7.4 kW through. On it a Standard Range Inster goes from empty to full in about 6 hours and a Long Range in about 7. The 32A three-phase cable is money well spent only where three-phase power genuinely exists behind the socket, meaning a workplace or a 22 kW public post rather than a driveway.

This is where the Inster parts company with bigger EVs. A 16A cable holds the car at 3.7 kW, which is 12 hours from empty on the 42.0 kWh battery and 14 hours on the 49.0 kWh. Both of those still finish inside one night on the plug, which is simply not true of a 77 kWh Ioniq 5. On an Inster the 16A cable is a genuine option rather than a false economy. What it costs you is daytime flexibility: arrive home at five needing 60 miles for an evening trip and the 32A cable is done in around ninety minutes where the 16A takes over three hours.

Hyundai supplies a Type 2 Mode 3 cable with the Inster but publishes neither its length nor its amperage, and no three-pin cable is included with the car. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable covers that gap, pulling 2.3 kW from an ordinary 13A socket for roughly twelve miles of range an hour. A thirteen hour stop at a relative's house is worth about 155 miles on a Standard Range car, most of its 203 mile WLTP figure. That front nearside flap is what decides your length. Drive forwards onto a driveway with the wallbox mounted near the house and the socket ends up at the far end of the car from the unit, so measure that run with the car standing where you actually leave it. 5m suits a reverse-in park or a unit sited ahead of the bonnet on the left. Choose 10m for nose-in parking, a box on the offside wall, or a shared bay. 15m and 20m exist for long drives and detached garages.

Trims are 01, 02 and Cross, the Cross being sold with the 49.0 kWh battery only, from £23,755. WLTP range is 203 miles on the 42.0 kWh car and 229 miles on the 49.0 kWh, falling to 223 miles for the Cross and on 17 inch wheels. Which charging cable does a Hyundai Inster need?

A Hyundai Inster needs a Type 2 to Type 2 cable, and the 32A single-phase version is the one to buy for home because it hands the car the full 7.4 kW a domestic supply allows. A Type 2 to 3-Pin cable makes sense as a second purchase, since Hyundai does not put one in the boot.

Do the two Hyundai Inster batteries charge at the same rate?

Yes. The 42.0 kWh and 49.0 kWh Hyundai Inster both accept 10.5 kW on AC, so the rate is identical and only the duration changes. On a 7.4 kW home supply the Standard Range takes about 6 hours from empty and the Long Range about 7.

Is the Hyundai Inster 10.5kW or 11kW on AC?

10.5 kW is the figure Hyundai gives in its UK Tech and Spec Guide, and 11 kW is the rounded number used in press releases. Both describe the same three-phase onboard charger fitted to every Hyundai Inster. On a single-phase British supply the car is held to 7.4 kW either way, so the difference never appears on a home wallbox.

Is a three-phase cable worth it on a Hyundai Inster?

Only where there is three-phase power to plug it into. A Hyundai Inster on a domestic supply draws 7.4 kW through a 32A three-phase cable, exactly what the cheaper single-phase cable already gives it. At a real three-phase supply the car takes 10.5 kW and a Long Range Inster fills in about 5 hours instead of 7.

Does the Hyundai Inster come with a three-pin cable?

No. Hyundai includes a Type 2 Mode 3 cable with the Inster but no three-pin cable, so charging from an ordinary household socket needs a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable bought separately. That draws 2.3 kW, around twelve miles of range an hour on a Standard Range Inster.

What length cable does a Hyundai Inster need?

It depends which way round you park, because the Hyundai Inster's charge flap is at the front on the nearside. Measure from the wallbox to that corner of the car as it normally stands. 5m works for a reverse-in park or a unit mounted ahead of the car on the left, while 10m covers nose-in parking, an offside wall, or a shared bay.

Every Hyundai Inster has the same onboard charger, so the battery you chose changes the duration and not the rate. Hyundai rounds this figure to 11 kW in press material while its UK Tech and Spec Guide states 10.5 kW. Either way a single-phase British home supply limits the car to 7.4 kW, which is exactly what the 32A single-phase cable delivers. The 32A three-phase cable is only useful where three-phase power is actually installed.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
