Product Description

A Honda CR-V Plug-in Hybrid charging cable is feeding an onboard charger rated at 6.8 kW, single phase, which is close to twice the 3.6 to 3.7 kW that plug-in hybrids normally offer. Honda UK quotes 2 hours 30 mins from flat at that rate and 7.7 hours from a 2.3 kW domestic socket. The battery holds 17.7 kWh and the electric range is 50 miles WLTP, and neither number moves between the two grades on sale.

What sets this car apart is what it does not have. The CR-V e:PHEV takes electricity through a Type 2 socket and that socket is the whole of its charging equipment. No CCS inlet, no DC rate quoted anywhere in Honda's UK material. On a 17.7 kWh battery worth 50 miles that is unusual, and it changes what the lead is for: on most cars a Type 2 cable is the convenient option next to rapid charging, while on this one it is the only way electricity gets in.

So every Honda CR-V e:PHEV uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. British wallboxes and untethered public posts both wear that fitting, which settles the connector before you look at anything else.

Honda's 6.8 kW is a single-phase rating, and a 32A single-phase lead is rated to 7.4 kW, comfortably above it. Our 32A Type 2 to Type 2 cable therefore hands the CR-V everything its charger will take and delivers Honda's own 2 hours 30 mins. The 22 kW three-phase version is stranded twice over here: a house in Britain is supplied through one phase, and the CR-V's charger is a single-phase unit that would ignore the other two even at a site that had them. The charge still takes 2 hours 30 mins, so the extra outlay buys nothing.

Amperage matters more on this car than on the average plug-in hybrid, precisely because Honda fitted the faster charger. A 16A lead delivers 3.7 kW, a little over half of what the CR-V will accept, and it turns Honda's 2 hours 30 mins into roughly 4 hours 45 mins. On a 3.6 kW plug-in hybrid a 16A cable costs the owner nothing whatsoever. On this one it hands back the advantage that was paid for at the showroom.

With no rapid option to fall back on, a CR-V e:PHEV parked overnight at a hotel or at relatives either has a three-pin lead in the boot or it drives home on petrol. The 6.8 kW and 2.3 kW times are Honda UK's own published figures, and the 16A time is worked from the same 17.7 kWh on the same basis. Honda publishes one capacity without labelling it usable or gross, so treat all four as a shade optimistic. Expect lower figures in winter and on long fast runs.

Which charging cable fits a Honda CR-V e:PHEV?

The 32A single-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable fits a Honda CR-V e:PHEV and is the one to buy. Its onboard charger takes 6.8 kW, that lead is rated to 7.4 kW, and the pairing gives Honda's published 2 hours 30 mins from flat. Because the car has no other inlet, this is also the cable you take to a public charge point.

Can a Honda CR-V plug-in hybrid use a rapid charger?

No. The Honda CR-V e:PHEV has no CCS socket and Honda's UK material quotes no DC charging figure for it, so a rapid charger has nothing to connect to. Everything the car takes, it takes as AC through its Type 2 socket, which is why the cable choice on this model carries more weight than it does on a plug-in hybrid that can rapid charge.

Does a Honda CR-V e:HEV need a charging cable?

No, and this is the CR-V trap worth knowing. The e:HEV is a full hybrid with a 1.06 kWh battery, no socket of any kind, and it is sold alongside the plug-in under the same CR-V name. It is also the all-wheel-drive one, while the e:PHEV that plugs in is front-wheel drive, so the electrified version is the less capable off the tarmac. Trim names sit one word apart too: e:HEV comes as Elegance and Advance, e:PHEV as Elegance Tech and Advance Tech, with the same engine, the same motor and the same 0 to 62 time in both. Find the charging flap before you order a cable.

Do I need the 22kW cable for a Honda CR-V plug-in hybrid?

No, the 22kW three-phase cable does nothing for a Honda CR-V e:PHEV. Its charger is a single-phase 6.8 kW unit, so the two additional conductors have nowhere to connect, and a domestic supply in Britain would not be feeding them anyway. A full charge lands on 2 hours 30 mins with the cheaper 32A single-phase lead and stays there with the dearer one.

What does a 16A cable cost a Honda CR-V e:PHEV in charging time?

About two and a quarter hours per full charge. A 16A lead holds the Honda CR-V e:PHEV to 3.7 kW, which takes the fill from Honda's 2 hours 30 mins out to roughly 4 hours 45 mins, and drops the hourly return from around 19 electric miles to around 10. On a car built to charge at 6.8 kW that is the wrong place to save money.

What length cable does a Honda CR-V plug-in hybrid need?

Measure it rather than guess, and measure with the car parked where it actually lives, because a Honda CR-V is a large family SUV and the distance from a wallbox to the flap changes completely depending on which way round it sits. Worth knowing that Honda's own Mode 3 accessory lead is 7 metres, which falls between our 5m and 10m, so any owner who has found 5m tight in the past should be ordering 10m.     A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
