Product Description

The Genesis GV60 takes 11 kW AC on every version sold in Britain, from the original Premium through the current Pure, Sport and Performance to the GV60 Magma. Because 11 kW is a three phase figure and homes run on one phase, the car draws 7.4 kW at a domestic wallbox and a 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable delivers all of it.

Every Genesis GV60 uses a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, connecting to the Type 2 portion of its CCS Combo 2 inlet.

The interesting thing about the GV60 range is that the trim you chose changes your range but not your charging time. All the cars in a given generation share one battery and one onboard charger, so they all take the same number of hours to fill. What differs is how far each one travels on that energy. The original Premium managed 321 miles from 77.4 kWh while the Sport Plus returned 289 from the same pack, and on the newer 84 kWh car the spread runs from 348 miles down to 311, with the Magma at 264.

In practice that means an hour on a 32A single phase cable is worth about 31 miles to a Pure and closer to 26 to a Magma, while both cars finish a full charge in the same time. If you have gone for a faster GV60, the cable does not need to change, but you will be plugging in a little more often.

The 32A single phase lead is the right cable for essentially every GV60 owner. It fills the 84 kWh car in about 12 hours 45 minutes and the earlier 77.4 kWh car in about 11 hours 45 minutes, and it puts around 220 miles back in over a seven hour overnight window.

Going down to a 16A cable cuts the rate to 3.7 kW and roughly halves everything, taking the overnight figure to about 105 miles. Going up to a 22 kW three phase cable achieves nothing at a house, since the extra two phases simply are not present in a domestic supply, and the GV60 caps at 11 kW even where they are. Three phase belongs in a workplace car park, where it lifts the GV60 to about 46 miles an hour.

A Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable runs at 2.3 kW and adds roughly 10 miles an hour to a GV60. Nobody should plan to charge a car this size on a household socket, but as a lead that lets you take energy from any ordinary plug when you are away from home, it earns its space in the boot.

Range added per hour is quoted for the longest range version of each generation. Sport, Performance and Magma trims cover fewer miles per kWh, so subtract roughly a tenth for Sport and about a fifth for Magma. Genesis publishes total pack size rather than usable capacity, so these times are slightly conservative. Winter temperatures and motorway cruising will both reduce it.

What cable should a Genesis GV60 owner buy?

A 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable. The Genesis GV60 accepts 11 kW on three phases, which a British home cannot supply, so the practical ceiling at a domestic wallbox is 7.4 kW and the 32A single phase lead delivers exactly that.

Do the GV60 trims charge at different speeds?

No. Every Genesis GV60 in a given generation shares one battery and one 11 kW onboard charger, so Premium, Sport, Pure, Performance and Magma all take the same time to charge. The trims differ in efficiency, so a Pure gains around 31 miles an hour on a 32A cable where a Magma gains closer to 26.

Will a 22kW cable charge a GV60 faster?

Not at home, and not by as much as the label suggests anywhere else. The Genesis GV60 limits itself to 11 kW, so a 22 kW cable can never deliver its full rating to this car. At a three phase commercial charge point that 11 kW cuts a full charge from about 12 hours 45 minutes to 8 hours 45 minutes. On a house supply it changes nothing at all.

How long a cable does a GV60 need?

The Genesis GV60 is a mid size SUV of about 4.5 metres with its charging flap on the rear right wing. Reversing onto a driveway with the wallbox on that side makes 5m workable. Most owners drive in forwards, which puts the flap at the far end of the car, and those owners want 10m. Sloped or shared driveways push the answer to 10m as well.

How much range does one overnight charge add to a GV60?

About 220 miles, taking a seven hour cheap rate stretch and a 32A single phase lead, which recovers most of the Genesis GV60's usable range in a single night. Swap to a 16A lead over those same hours and the figure falls to roughly 105 miles.

Can a GV60 charge from a normal plug socket?

Yes, with a Type 2 to 3-Pin charging cable, though slowly. A Genesis GV60 gains about 10 miles of range an hour that way and would need well over a day to charge from empty, so treat a three pin lead as a way of taking a top up wherever there is a socket rather than as your main charging method.

Compatibility

The GV60 is straightforward to buy for: one battery, one charger rating, Type 2 for AC and CCS for rapid charging, whichever trim you have. All three UK versions share the same 77.4 kWh pack and the same 11 kW onboard charger. What makes the car interesting is the 800V architecture, which is what allows it to take well over 200 kW on a DC rapid charger, but that has nothing to do with the cable you buy here. On a UK home supply, which is single phase, the GV60 charges at about 7.4 kW, so a 32A Type 2 cable is the right product and there is no faster option to look for.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
