The Ford Kuga accepts up to 3.6 kW on AC. The 16A cable delivers that in full, so it is all the car needs and the cheapest lead that does the job properly. A 32A or three-phase cable would cost more and charge no faster.

The Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid, on sale in the UK since 2020 and still current in Titanium, ST-Line, ST-Line X and Active trim, has a Type 2 inlet and an onboard charger that tops out at 3.7 kW on a single phase. A Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable fits every one of them, and because the car stops well short of the 7.4 kW a home wallbox can offer, the cheapest cable on this page is also the fastest one the Kuga can use. Ford quotes about four hours for a full charge from a wallbox and under six from a domestic socket, and neither the 2024 facelift nor the jump from 225 PS to 243 PS changed the charger or the 14.4 kWh battery. This page is about the plug-in Kuga only; the Hybrid and mild hybrid versions have no socket and take no cable.

Which Ford Kuga charging cable to buy

Full speed at home: the 16A single phase cable. Sold in our menu as 16amp (3.6kW), it carries 3.7 kW, which is exactly what the Kuga's onboard charger will accept, so a flat battery is full in about 4 hours 30 minutes and nothing dearer can improve on that. Works, but no faster: the 32A single phase cable. Listed as 32amp (7.2kW), it can carry 7.4 kW, but a Kuga draws 3.7 kW through it and finishes in the same 4 hours 30 minutes. There are two honest reasons to pick it anyway: we only make the 15 metre and 20 metre lengths in 32A, and a 32A lead will be the right cable for a fully electric car later, so a household expecting to replace the Kuga with an EV can buy once. Works, but no faster anywhere: the 32A three phase cable. Listed as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW), it is the dearest item in the price list and changes nothing on this car. The Kuga has a single phase charger, so even a genuine three phase post at a workplace hands it 3.7 kW, the same figure you get from the 16A lead on a driveway. On a Kuga this is the cable to skip. Whichever amperage you order, the Type 2 to Type 2 cable is also the lead you carry for untethered public posts, which are the norm in UK car parks and on street; the Kuga draws its 3.7 kW there too.

Length is decided by the flap, which is on the left front wing, ahead of the passenger door, on a car about 4.6 metres long. That front position is unusually convenient: drive nose in with the wallbox anywhere across the front of the house and the 5 metre 16A cable reaches without crossing the car. Reverse in, for example, and the flap ends up at the far end of the drive from most wallbox positions, which is when the 10 metre 16A version earns its money. On a shared drive, a kerbside charge, or a wallbox mounted on a garage set back from the house, the 15 metre and 20 metre cables cover it, both in 32A, which on a Kuga simply means a longer lead at the same 3.7 kW.

The Kuga is one of the few cars where a three pin lead is a complete answer rather than a stopgap. Ford's own line is that the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid comes with one home charging cable as standard and that a public charging cable is a dealer accessory, and UK owners consistently report the same thing: a three pin lead in the boot and no Type 2 to Type 2 cable. That factory lead is a 10 amp unit; our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, the item most people call a granny cable, runs at 2.3 kW from any 13 amp socket and fills the 14.4 kWh battery from empty in about 7 hours, roughly 7 miles of electric range an hour on the current car. Plug in at seven in the evening and the Kuga is full long before breakfast, which is why plenty of Kuga owners never fit a wallbox at all. The lead is IP67 sealed, has a Type B RCD built into the control box, lets you turn the current down for an older socket, and works from -30C to +60C. If the original went missing with a previous owner, this replaces it outright.

The details Ford publishes give the battery as 14.4 kWh with no usable figure, so the times above are worked on the full capacity and the real car will finish a little sooner. Ford's own charger figure is 3.6 kW; the 3.7 kW used here is the same 16 amp single phase supply expressed at nominal UK voltage. Cold mornings and a motorway commute will both take a few miles off the range per hour.

What charging cable does Ford put in the boot of a Kuga Plug-In Hybrid?

A new Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid comes with a single three pin home charging cable, and nothing for a wallbox or public post. Ford's statement is that the Kuga Plug-In Hybrid comes with one home charging cable as standard and that the public charging cable is bought separately from a dealer, and UK owners report having received exactly that on delivery. A Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable is therefore the first thing to order once a socketed wallbox is fitted, and a Type 2 to 3-Pin cable is the replacement if the original has gone.

Is the 32A cable wasted on a Ford Kuga?

For the Kuga on its own, yes. A Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid takes 3.7 kW at most, the 16A Type 2 to Type 2 cable carries 3.7 kW, and the 32A cable running through the same 3.7 kW ceiling finishes the same 14.4 kWh battery in the same 4 hours 30 minutes. Buy the 32A only if you need the 15 or 20 metre length, which we make in 32A alone, or if a fully electric car is likely to share the wallbox before the cable wears out.

Would a 3 phase cable make a Ford Kuga charge any quicker?

No, a 3 phase cable does not speed up a Ford Kuga anywhere. The car's onboard charger is single phase and rated at 3.7 kW, so a 22 kW 3 phase cable connected to a genuine three phase post at work still delivers 3.7 kW to the car, exactly as it does on a house. Every Kuga Plug-In Hybrid from 2020 to the current 243 PS car behaves this way, which makes the three phase cable the one product on this page with no use case for this vehicle.

Can a Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid live on a three pin plug without a wallbox?

Yes, a Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid can run on a three pin socket comfortably. The Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable charges a Ford Kuga at 2.3 kW and fills the 14.4 kWh battery from empty in about 7 hours, so a car plugged in at teatime is full by the morning, with only 2 hours 30 minutes separating it from the fastest cable the Kuga can use. Because the electric range is 35 to 42 miles, one overnight charge covers a typical commute, and the cable's Type B RCD and adjustable current make an ordinary 13 amp socket a reasonable long term arrangement rather than an emergency one.

Do the 2020 and 2024 Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrids need different cables?

No, every Ford Kuga Plug-In Hybrid takes the same cable. The 2020 to 2023 car with 225 PS and the 2024 onwards car with 243 PS share the same Type 2 inlet on the nearside front wing, the same 14.4 kWh battery and the same 3.7 kW single phase onboard charger. The facelift raised the WLTP electric range from 35 to 42 miles, so an hour on the 16A cable adds about 11 miles on the newer car against 9 on the older one, but the cable choice and the 4 hours 30 minutes charge time are identical.

Is 5 metres of cable enough for a Ford Kuga?

Usually, because the Ford Kuga's charging flap is at the front of the nearside wing, so a car driven nose in towards a wallbox on the house wall has its socket right beside the charger. Five metres runs short when you reverse in, when the wallbox is on the far side of a double drive, or when a second car sits between the Kuga and the charger; 10 metres covers all three. For a garage set back from the house or a kerbside charge, the 15 and 20 metre 32A cables are the answer, and on a Kuga they charge at the same 3.7 kW as the shorter 16A lead.

Compatibility

Ford sells three different electrified Kugas and only one of them plugs in, which is the single most common mix-up we see. If yours is badged Plug-In Hybrid or PHEV, it has a Type 2 socket behind a flap on the left front wing and it takes a cable. If it is the Full Hybrid (FHEV, sometimes called self-charging) or the EcoBlue mHEV mild hybrid, it has no charging port at all and no cable will help. Ford's own words for both: they charge from the engine and brakes, with no need to plug in. For the PHEV, the useful thing to know is that its onboard charger is only 3.6 kW, so a 16A cable is all it can use. A 32A cable will work perfectly well, it just will not make the car charge any faster.

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
