The Ford Explorer accepts up to 11 kW on AC. This cable carries the fastest version of the car at full speed and works on any three-phase charge point you meet.

Only charging at home? A British house is single phase, so the car draws 7.4 kW whatever cable is plugged into it. The 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) gives you all of that for less money.

There are two entirely different cars called Ford Explorer, and only one of them plugs in. The electric Ford Explorer, built in Cologne from 2024 and sold across Europe, has an 11 kW onboard charger and a Type 2 inlet. The American Ford Explorer is a large petrol SUV with no charging socket anywhere on it. If you are on this page for a European electric Explorer, everything below applies. The surprise for most owners is the size: at 4.468 metres it is one of the shortest electric SUVs on sale, which makes cable length easier here than on almost any rival.

The electric Explorer takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable, with the flap on the offside rear quarter, behind the driver's door. Every UK version is fully electric, so there is no trim in the range without a socket.

Get the 32A single phase cable for home charging. The 11 kW figure is a three phase rating, and a British house is fed by a single phase carrying up to 7.4 kW, which is what the Explorer will draw on a domestic wallbox. Add the 32A three phase lead only if you have access to three genuine phases at a workplace or commercial unit, where an Extended Range car falls from 11 hours 45 minutes to 8 hours.

The 16A cable costs more than it saves here. On the Standard Range battery nine hours of charging turns into eighteen for the sake of thirteen pounds, and on Extended Range it goes past twenty three hours.

The 3-pin cable belongs in the boot, not on the driveway. Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable manages 2.3 kW from a 13 amp house socket, about 11 miles an hour, which is a long way from a full charge but enough to add eighty or ninety miles over a night away from home. Ford's UK price list and its European technical sheet swap the 77 and 79 kWh labels between the rear and all wheel drive cars, so treat the exact capacity as approximate. Charge times move by minutes either way. Low temperatures and fast cruising each reduce what an hour actually returns.

Which charging cable does the electric Ford Explorer need?

Get the 32A single phase Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable. The electric Ford Explorer is rated at 11 kW three phase, which a British house converts to 7.4 kW, and that cable hands over every watt the car can take at home.

Is this the same Explorer as the American one?

No. The electric Ford Explorer is built in Cologne on a European platform and went on sale in 2024. The North American Ford Explorer is a large petrol SUV with no charging socket at all. They share a name and nothing else, so no cable on this site fits the American car.

Do I need the 22kW cable for a Ford Explorer?

Only if you charge somewhere with three genuine phases, such as a workplace or an industrial unit, where an Extended Range Explorer drops from 11 hours 45 minutes to 8 hours. On a house the three phase cable delivers precisely the same 7.4 kW as the cheaper 32A single phase one.

How long does a Ford Explorer take to charge at home?

On a 32A cable, reckon on 8 hours 45 minutes to fill the 58 kWh Standard Range from flat, 11 hours 45 minutes for the Extended Range rear wheel drive, and 12 hours for the all wheel drive. Seven hours on a cheap overnight tariff puts back roughly 250 miles on the Extended Range cars.

What length of cable suits a Ford Explorer?

At 4.468 metres this is a short SUV, and the flap is on the offside rear quarter, so 5m reaches on most driveways where you reverse in with the wallbox on the driver's side. The 10m is for kerbside charging, a shared drive, or a unit mounted up by the house.

Can I use my own cable at a public charger?

Yes, and on AC you have little choice. Untethered posts dominate British streets and car parks, so the socket is bare and the driver brings the lead. Rapid CCS charging is different, because the charger has its own cable permanently attached.

Compatibility

Two very different vehicles are called Explorer and only one of them was ever sold here. The UK Explorer is the electric one, built in Cologne and on sale in Britain since 2024. There was also an Explorer plug-in hybrid with a 3.0 V6, sold in mainland Europe from 2020, but Ford only ever built it in left-hand drive, so no UK buyer could order one. For the electric car, every UK version has a Type 2 socket and an 11 kW onboard charger, including the cheaper Standard Range, which is worth knowing because some cars on the same platform drop to 7.2 kW at the entry point and the Explorer does not. Note that the AWD has a slightly larger pack than the rear-drive Extended Range, 79 kWh against 77.

  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
