The Audi Q6 e-tron accepts up to 11 kW on AC, with 22 kW available as an option. That is what the 22 kW cable is built for, and a workplace or commercial three-phase supply is where it pays the difference back.

Never charge anywhere but home? Then the extra phases have nothing to connect to. A domestic wallbox gives 7.4 kW and the 32A single-phase cable (5m / 10m / 15m / 20m) delivers exactly that.

Every Audi Q6 e-tron, from the 75.8 kWh Sport through the performance, the quattro and the Sportback to the SQ6, charges through a Type 2 inlet, takes a Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable and settles at 7.4 kW on a home wallbox. What marks this Audi out is that it wears two charging sockets, one on each rear wing: the combined Type 2 and CCS socket on the passenger side of a UK car, a second AC only Type 2 socket on the driver's side. A Q6 e-tron can be plugged in from whichever flank faces the charge point. That takes the usual gamble out of choosing a length and leaves one question that matters: which onboard charger your car was built with. Audi quotes a maximum charging capacity of 11 kW AC as standard and stated at launch that 22 kW AC would arrive as an option later in the model's life, and EV Database now lists that 22 kW upgrade against the vehicle. Neither number is reachable from a house.

Picking the right cable for an Audi Q6 e-tron

The buy for home on any Q6: the 32A single phase cable. It appears in the rated power drop down as 32amp (7.2kW) and passes 7.4 kW, all that one live phase can put into a car at a British address. A 94.9 kWh performance, quattro or SQ6 fills from flat in 14 hours 30 minutes on it and picks up about 31 miles of range an hour; the 75.8 kWh car needs 11 hours 30 minutes and gains about 32. Only this rating comes in 15 and 20 metre lengths. Buy it for work rather than the house: the 32A three phase cable, shown as 32amp - 3 Phase (22kW). A domestic supply offers one live phase, so two of the three power cores in that lead have nothing to do on a driveway and the Q6 holds at 7.4 kW. Take it to a charging station fed by three phases and a standard 94.9 kWh car is full inside 9 hours 45 minutes, or in 4 hours 45 where the 22 kW charger was specified. The one to leave alone: the 16A cable. Our 16amp (3.6kW) option is the slow one, capping the Q6 at 3.7 kW: that stretches the 94.9 kWh charge to 29 hours and cuts what a seven hour off peak window returns from roughly 217 miles of range to 112. On a battery this size that is where the overnight charge stops fitting inside the cheap rate.

Two sockets make the length sum easier, not irrelevant. The Q6 e-tron is 4.77 metres long and the charge port you use is whichever rear wing ends up nearer the unit, so the 5 metre cable covers far more parking arrangements than it does on a car with one flap: nose in or reversed, wallbox on the near wall or the far one, the run to the closer rear quarter is usually under five metres. The 10 metre lead is for a charge point at the front of the house while the car sits at the top of the drive, for a shared bay, or for a garage with the unit inside it and the Q6 outside. Go to 15 metres or 20 metres for a post across a courtyard or a charger sited at the road end of a long approach. Pace out the distance from the unit to the nearer rear quarter with the Q6 exactly where it lives, then order to that figure, since Type 2 leads are not made to be joined end to end.

Our Type 2 to 3-Pin Charging Cable, the 6amp - 12amp Adjustable (2.3kW) option, is the portable charger of the pair, a Mode 2 lead for the night a Q6 spends somewhere with no wallbox in sight. A 13 amp household socket gives it 2.3 kW, worth about 10 miles of range an hour, or roughly 70 miles across a night at a relative's house. It is no way to run the car day to day: a 94.9 kWh pack would want 46 hours 30 minutes to fill from flat. Safety lives in the control box, which holds a Type B RCD and lets the draw be dialled down to 6 amps for a socket on tired wiring, and the IP67 seal covers an outside socket in wet weather. Audi's UK charging guidance lists a Mode 3 Type 2 cable and a compact charging system with a household plug among the equipment supplied with an Audi e-tron, though a used Q6 arrives with whatever the last keeper chose to leave in it, so look before you need it.

Where the 22 kW charger was ordered and a three phase charging station is within reach, the 94.9 kWh cars are done in 4 hours 45 minutes at about 92 miles an hour, the 75.8 kWh cars in 4 hours at about 95. WLTP ratings vary depending on body style, wheels and drivetrain: Audi UK quotes up to 398 miles for the Q6 e-tron performance, 388 for the quattro and 365 for the SQ6, with the Sportback worth roughly another ten miles in each case, so a quattro on large wheels sits below the range column above and a Sportback performance a little over it. Battery capacity figures are Audi's own net numbers and do not move with trim, so a full charge takes the same time on a Sport as on any other 75.8 kWh Q6. Neither range column holds up in low temperatures or at a sustained motorway speed.

What type of charger does the Audi Q6 e-tron use?

An Audi Q6 e-tron uses a Type 2 connector for AC charging, so the lead it needs at home and at untethered public charging stations is a Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 32A single phase. The vehicle is fully electric and accepts 11 kW as standard, but a single phase supply limits any British home EV charger to 7.4 kW, and this cable carries all of it. Charging speed follows the lowest rating in the chain, the supply, the cable and then the onboard charger, which is why a 32A lead and an 11 kW car still meet at 7.4 kW. For home charging, scheduling, load balancing and off peak timing are jobs for the wallbox rather than the lead, so an Ohme, a Zappi and a Pod Point all take the same cable.

Can an Audi Q6 e-tron be charged from either side of the car?

Yes, for AC charging. The Audi Q6 e-tron carries a Type 2 socket on both rear wings, an AC only socket on the driver's side and a combined Type 2 and CCS socket on the passenger side, and either one accepts the same Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable at the same speed, so compatibility is identical on both sides. Only the passenger side socket takes a DC rapid charger, where Audi rates the Q6 e-tron at up to 270 kW, and those posts are tethered, so they ask nothing of the boot. At home it means the Q6 can be parked whichever way round suits the drive.

Does the 22kW three phase cable earn its money on an Audi Q6 e-tron?

Away from the house, and most of all on an Audi Q6 e-tron fitted with the optional 22 kW onboard charger, which lifts its AC charging capacity from 11 kW. Workplace charging is where that shows: at a post fed by three live phases, a standard 94.9 kWh Q6 is full in 9 hours 45 minutes, and the same car specified with 22 kW AC in 4 hours 45. On a domestic supply the three phase lead hands over 7.4 kW, which is what the cheaper 32A single phase cable already delivers, so a Q6 that never charges anywhere but home gains nothing from it.

What charging cable comes with a new Audi Q6 e-tron?

Audi's UK charging guidance lists a Mode 3 Type 2 cable and a compact charging system with a household 3-pin plug among the equipment supplied with its electric cars, which is the manufacturer's position rather than a promise about any particular Audi Q6 e-tron. On a used Q6 the compact system is the piece most often absent, and neither lead is certain to still be aboard, so owners buying second hand should read the car's specifications and then look in the boot. Check what is there before the wallbox installation date, because a car with no Type 2 cable cannot use an untethered home charger at all.

How much longer does the 16A cable take on an Audi Q6 e-tron?

Roughly twice as long, because a 16A cable halves the maximum the car can draw. It holds an Audi Q6 e-tron to 3.7 kW, so the 94.9 kWh battery wants 29 hours from empty against 14 hours 30 minutes on the 32A single phase cable, and the 75.8 kWh battery 23 hours 15 minutes against 11 hours 30. Over one seven hour cheap rate period that is about 112 miles of range instead of 217 to 224, which on a pack of this size decides whether the Q6 is ready in the morning.

Does the second socket change what cable length an Audi Q6 e-tron needs?

It makes 5 metres workable in more places, so plan the length around the nearer of the two sockets. Because the Audi Q6 e-tron has a charging socket on each rear wing, the cable only has to reach whichever one is closer, and on a 4.77 metre car standing on an ordinary drive that run is short whichever way the nose points. Choose 10 metres when the wallbox is at the opposite end of the house from where the Q6 stops, or when the bay is shared, and 15 or 20 metres for kerbside parking or a charger set well back from the space.

  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

    A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

    A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

    A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

    A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp - 12amp Adjustable

    The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

    A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

    A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

    A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
