Product Description

The 32amp Type 1 to Type 2 EV cable adapter converts an existing Type 1 charging cable so it will plug into a Type 2 vehicle inlet. If you already own a Type 1 cable, or you have arrived at an older charge point with a Type 1 lead permanently tethered to it, this adapter is what lets you use it on a Type 2 car.

It is a short connector body, not a cable. The Type 1 end accepts the lead you already have, and the Type 2 end goes into the car. Nothing about your existing cable changes, and no wiring work is involved.

When you need one

  • Your home or workplace unit has a tethered Type 1 lead and your car takes Type 2
  • You have kept a Type 1 cable from a previous car and want to carry on using it
  • You want a small item in the boot as a fallback for older charging posts

What it is rated for

The adapter is rated at 32 amps. Type 1 is a five pin single phase connector, so 7.4 kW is its physical ceiling and no three phase version exists. UK homes are single phase anyway, which means 7.4 kW is the most you will ever draw at home whatever cable or car is involved. The adapter will not raise the speed of anything: your car charges at the lowest limit in the chain, which is your car's onboard charger, the supply at the charge point, and the rating of the cable and adapter together.

One important limitation

Not every charge point operator allows adapters. Pod Point, for one, has told us that adapters are not permitted on their charging stations, so plan around that if a Pod Point unit is the one you rely on. Some other networks take the same view. Adapters are best treated as a solution for your own home or workplace unit and as a fallback elsewhere, rather than as your everyday method.

If you charge on a Type 1 car every day, a full Type 1 charging cable is the better buy. One cable with the correct connector on each end has no join, nothing extra to lose, and no operator objections. Keep the adapter for the occasional awkward post.

FAQs

Type 1 to Type 2 Adapter FAQs

What does this adapter actually do?

It changes the connector on the end of a Type 1 charging cable to a Type 2, so that cable will fit a Type 2 vehicle inlet. It is a short adapter body rather than a cable in its own right, so you still need the Type 1 cable or tethered lead it plugs onto. On its own it will not charge anything.

How fast will my car charge through it?

Up to 7.4 kW, because the adapter is rated at 32 amps and Type 1 is a single phase connector. Adding the adapter does not slow anything down, but it does not speed anything up either. The real limit is whichever is lowest of your car's onboard charger, the supply at the charge point, and the 32 amp rating.

Will it work at any public charge point?

No, and this matters. Several operators do not permit adapters on their equipment, and Pod Point have confirmed to us that theirs are not allowed. Check the network's own rules before you rely on it away from home. On your own home or workplace unit, where you set the rules, an adapter is a straightforward fix.

What does the 32 amp rating mean in practice?

32 amps on a UK single phase supply works out at 7.4 kW, which is the same ceiling as a standard home wallbox. There is no three phase Type 1, so 7.4 kW is as high as this connector goes by design. A 16 amp cable in the chain would cap the whole run at roughly half that.

Can I leave it plugged in outdoors?

It is built to IEC 62196 and is designed for outdoor use while charging, so rain on the driveway is not a problem once both ends are seated and latched. Do not leave the adapter lying loose on wet ground with the contacts exposed, and never drive over it. Store it dry in the boot between uses.

Should I buy this or a proper Type 1 cable?

Buy the adapter if the problem is occasional, or if the lead you are stuck with is tethered to the wall and cannot be swapped. If you own a Type 1 car and charge daily, a dedicated Type 1 cable is tidier, has no join in the middle, and avoids the operator restrictions adapters run into.

Sizing guide
  • Type 2 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles (EVs) with a Type 2 connector to charging points is also equipped with a Type 2 socket. It supports faster charging speeds and is commonly used across Europe for EVs with this standard connection.

  • Type 2 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable allows electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket to charge from a standard UK 3-pin domestic outlet. It provides a slower charge but is useful for home or emergency charging when dedicated charging stations aren't available.

  • Type 2 Extension Cable:

A cable used to extend the reach of a Type 2 charging cable. It's helpful when the existing cable is too short to connect an electric vehicle to the charging point, providing more flexibility in parking.

  • Type 2 Tethered Cable:

A fixed charging cable attached to a charging point, designed for electric vehicles with a Type 2 socket. The tethered design eliminates the need to carry a separate cable, offering convenience for regular charging at home or work.

  • Type 1 to Type 2 Charging Cable:

A charging cable that connects electric vehicles with a Type 1 socket to charging points equipped with a Type 2 outlet. This allows EVs with the older Type 1 standard to use more modern charging infrastructure.

  • Type 1 to 3 Pin Charging Cable:

This cable enables electric vehicles with a Type 1 connector to charge from a standard UK 3-pin household outlet. It's suitable for slower charging at home when dedicated EV charging points aren't accessible.

Sizing guide
  • 5m - Charging Cable Length

A 5M charging cable is the shortest length that we offer. It is a great option if you can park close to the charge point and do not need much length to reach your car.

  • 10m - Charging Cable Length

A 10M charging cable is the most popular length. It allows you to have enough flexibility whilst still being easy enough to move. This is a great option if you cannot park close to the electricity supply.

  • 15m - Charging Cable Length

A 15M charging cable is a great choice if you need some extra flexibility, i.e. get past another car or reach the other end of a driveway. The length of the cable does not affect the charging speed.

  • 20m - Charging Cable Length

A 20M charging cable is the longest cable that we currently offer. 20M reaches the vast majority of locations where you would want to charge your car. Always use one continuous cable. Never join two charging cables together and never charge through an extension lead, because the join is where heat builds up.

How to choose your charge speed
  • 6amp – 10amp Adjustable

The choice if you will charge from a standard UK 3 pin socket. It runs at the most the socket can safely supply, and the control box lets you turn the current down for a slower, gentler charge overnight or on an older circuit.

  • 16amp

A 16amp cable will be able to charge at 3.7kW. This is the cheapest product if your car's max charge speed is 3.7kW. If you have two electric cars or are looking to purchase another it might be worth considering a faster charging cable as this could limit charge speeds moving forward.

  • 32amp

A 32amp charging cable will be able to charge at 7.4kW, which is the most a single phase UK home supply can deliver. A 32amp cable also charges at every lower speed (for example 16amp, 3.7kW), so it is the right choice if your home charge point is 7.4kW or you mostly charge at home.

  • 32amp (3 Phase)

A 32amp 3-phase charging cable will be able to charge at all speeds up to 22kW, so the cable never limits your charge speed at home or in public. It is also capable of charging at all lower charge speeds.
