Another possible method utilizes a standard three-pin charging cable. Many owners know it as a slow charger since it charges the car at a pace that is not that quick. Although this has certain risks associated with it, they are not as significant as when using a faster domestic charger. This is because the voltage is not as high and charging speeds are quite low. However, this does not in any way mean that you should be reckless when using an extension cord with a 3-pin charging cable. Just like with any other electrical device, unsafe usage can lead to potentially dangerous situations and life-threatening hazards.
Can a tethered charging cable be extended?
As mentioned earlier, there are numerous ways of charging an electric car at home. Some wall box chargers use tethered charging cables, while others rely on untethered variants. Despite serving the same purpose, it is obvious that unplugging a tethered charging cable is not possible. Not being able to take the cable with them can be a problem when going somewhere where there is no compatible charging cable available. Still, as the extension mechanism for both these cables is the same, it is possible to extend them using a well-built cable. As you can see from the charge speed table, the car will always be limited to the lowest charging speed. So try and make sure your ev cable extension is the same amperage as your ev cable.
Are extension cables waterproof?
The answer to this question depends on the extension cable in use. There is more than one manufacturer who claims their expansion cables are both water and weatherproof but. However, the real-life applications may prove different and the reality sometimes contradicts their claims. Many sockets have a thermal vent to let out excess heat, which unfortunately helps the water penetrate them easily. Therefore, looking for sockets that are labeled as waterproof may be a good idea. This may help avoid shorts and other issues in case they come in contact with water. But trying not to expose aftermarket cables to water and extreme conditions is even a better one. Let’s not forget that manufacturers aren’t always honest when they advertise the specifications of their products.

In case you decide to use an extension cable, make sure to follow all the guidelines and safety procedures. Moreover, try not to reach the safety threshold of the expansion cable and purchase a product with which a warranty has been offered.
