As people have become more environmentally conscious and demonstrated a willingness to adapt to new trends, electric vehicle (EV) ownership has risen sharply.
UK ownership passed two million battery electric cars in April 2026, according to
SMMT registration data. With nearly
9 million UK households owning two cars, it is increasingly common to find both of them electric. It normally begins with one car, and once the household sees the running cost difference, the second follows.
So how do you keep two of them charged?
The short answer
Yes, you can charge two electric cars at home. Most two EV households do it with one wallbox and a bit of scheduling, because two cars rarely both need a full charge on the same night.
The options, in rough order of cost, are to alternate on one charger, fit a dual socket unit, or install a second charger that shares the supply with load balancing.
How you charge an EV at home
There are two ways to charge at home, and the difference matters a lot once there are two cars.
A 3 pin socket
A
Type 2 to 3 pin cable plugs into an ordinary 13amp socket and charges at around 2.4kW, which adds roughly 8 miles of range an hour.
That is enough for one car doing modest daily miles. It is rarely enough for two, unless one of them is a plug-in hybrid with a small battery. Charging from a 3 pin socket also has real safety rules attached, which we cover in our guide to

A home wallbox
A 7kW wallbox charges at around 7.4kW on a single phase supply, which is roughly 25 miles of range an hour. That is about three times the speed of a 3 pin socket and it is what makes two cars practical on one charge point.
A wallbox costs £800 to £1,200 fully installed for a straightforward job. Our

On grants, the electric vehicle chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500. The cap rose from £350 to £500 on 1 April 2026 and the scheme runs to 31 March 2027. It is open to renters and flat owners with off street parking, and there is a matching £500 grant for households with on street parking who are fitting a cross pavement solution. The older scheme for homeowners with a driveway closed in 2022.
How to charge two EVs at home
If both cars park within reach of one charger, start there. Two cars very rarely both arrive home empty on the same evening, and most drivers find that alternating nights covers it without any extra hardware.
When that is not enough, you have three real options.

A dual socket charger. One unit, two sockets, splitting the available power between the two cars when both are plugged in. Simplest answer for a driveway where both cars park side by side.

Two separate chargers with load balancing. Two units sharing your house supply, with the load balancing making sure the two of them together never exceed what the supply can carry. This is the right answer for separate garage bays or two parking spaces some distance apart.

One charger and a longer cable. If the second car parks a few metres further away, a longer Type 2 to Type 2 cable often solves it for the price of a cable rather than the price of a second install.
What you must not do is join two cables together or run the charge through an extension lead to reach the second car. A charging cable is a single continuous run for a reason, and the join is where the heat builds. Our post on

Buy the length you need instead. We stock
Type 2 to Type 2 cables in 5m, 10m, 15m and 20m, all IP55 rated with a 2 year manufacturer's warranty. Measure from the charger to where each car's charge port sits when parked, then add a little slack so the cable is not stretched taut across a path.
Will two cars overload the supply?
Not if the installation is done properly. A typical UK home has a 60 to 100 amp main fuse, and two 32 amp chargers running flat out alongside an oven and a shower can exceed it.
This is exactly what load balancing exists for. The chargers monitor what the rest of the house is drawing and turn themselves down so the total stays within the supply. Any competent installer will specify it for a two charger install, and you should ask about it directly if it is not mentioned in the quote.
Three phase would remove the constraint, but UK homes are almost all single phase and upgrading typically costs £3,000 to £15,000. It is very rarely worth it for a two car household.
Charging two cars overnight on a cheap rate
Most two EV households are on an overnight EV tariff, and the cheap window is usually a fixed number of hours rather than the whole night.
That window is the real constraint, not the charger. At 7.4kW a car takes on roughly 7kWh an hour, so a five hour cheap window puts about 35kWh into one car. Splitting that window across two cars halves it for each.
In practice this is why alternating nights works so well. One car takes the full cheap window, the other takes the next one, and both stay topped up without either ever needing a full charge from empty.
Frequently asked questions
Can two electric cars share one charger?
Yes. Either plug them in on alternate nights, or fit a dual socket unit that splits the power between them. Most households find alternating is enough.
Can I plug two EVs into two 3 pin sockets at once?
Only if they are on separate circuits and an electrician has confirmed both are suitable. Two EVs drawing 2.4kW each for hours from sockets on the same ring is exactly the sustained load that causes trouble. Get it checked first.
Do I need two charging cables?
If your charger is untethered, yes, one per car is far more convenient than swapping a single cable between them. Check each car's connector, as almost all are Type 2 but some older cars are Type 1.
Does charging two cars cost more per mile?
No. You pay per kWh regardless. Two cars use more electricity in total, but the rate per mile is the same, and an overnight EV tariff applies to both.
Final thoughts
One wallbox and a bit of scheduling handles most two EV households. Add a second charger or a dual socket unit when the scheduling genuinely stops working, not before, and make sure load balancing is part of the quote.
What is never the answer is joining cables or running an extension lead to reach the second car. Buy the cable length you need.
