A 7kW home EV charger costs between £800 and £1,200 fully installed in the UK in 2026. The charger unit is roughly £400 to £700 of that and the electrician's labour is roughly £400 to £500.
In London and the South East the same job more often lands between £900 and £1,500.
Those are the numbers for a straightforward install. The things that push the price up are almost never the charger itself, and this guide covers what they are, what the government grant is worth in 2026, and when a home charger is not the cheapest way to solve the problem at all.

Smarter units with screens, solar matching or load balancing sit at the top of that unit range and can reach £1,100 on their own.
Every installer quotes on the property, not on a price list, so treat these as the range your quotes should fall inside rather than a fixed price. If a quote comes back well above £1,500 for an ordinary house, ask which of the extras below is driving it.
What pushes the cost up
Distance from the consumer unit. The further the charger sits from your fuse board, the more cable, trunking and labour the job needs. A charger on the wall next to the board is the cheapest install there is. One on a detached garage at the end of a garden is the most expensive.
A consumer unit upgrade. If your board is old or full, it may need replacing or extending before a charger can be added. That typically adds £500 to £1,200 to the job and is the single most common reason a quote comes back higher than expected.
Solid walls and trenching. Running a cable through a thick stone or solid brick wall, or underground to an outbuilding, is labour that a modern cavity wall does not need.
Earthing. Some properties need additional earth protection fitted for the installation to comply. Most modern chargers have this built in, which is one reason a slightly dearer unit can make the whole job cheaper.
A three phase supply. This is the one worth understanding before you spend anything. A 22kW charger needs a three phase supply, and UK homes are almost all single phase. Upgrading a house to three phase typically costs £3,000 to £15,000 depending on where the network connection sits.

The government grant in 2026
The electric vehicle chargepoint grant covers 75% of the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500. The cap rose from £350 to £500 on 1 April 2026 and the scheme runs to 31 March 2027.
There are two versions that matter to households:
- Renters and flat owners with private off street parking can claim up to £500 per socket.
- Households with on street parking only can claim up to £500 towards a cross pavement solution, which is a channel or gully that takes the cable under the footway rather than over it.
The older Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme, which covered homeowners with a driveway, closed in 2022 and has not come back. If you own a house with a driveway, you are paying the full cost.

Tethered or untethered, and what it does to the price
A tethered charger has the cable permanently attached. An untethered one has a socket, and you plug your own cable in.
Untethered units are usually a little cheaper, tidier when not in use, and they do not tie you to one cable length or one connector type. If the attached cable on a tethered unit is damaged, the repair is a job for the installer. If your own cable is damaged, you replace the cable.

When you do not need a charger at all
This is the part most installation cost guides leave out, because most of them are written by installers.
A Type 2 to 3 pin cable plugs into an ordinary 13amp socket and charges at around 2.4kW, which adds roughly 8 miles of range an hour, or about 100 miles across a twelve hour overnight session. A cable costs from £187.99. A charger install costs £800 to £1,200.
If your daily mileage is under about 80 miles and you can plug in most nights, a 3 pin cable genuinely covers you. For most plug-in hybrid drivers it is the only charging equipment worth buying, because a PHEV battery fills overnight from a normal socket anyway.

How to keep the quote down
- Get three quotes. Installation labour is where the spread is, not the hardware.
- Use an installer approved for the grant scheme if you are claiming, because the grant is applied by the installer rather than claimed back by you.
- Site the charger as close to the consumer unit as the parking allows.
- Ask whether your consumer unit needs work before you commit, so it is in the quote rather than a surprise on the day.
- Do not pay extra for 22kW on a single phase supply.
- Choose untethered and buy the cable length you actually need, measured from the charger to where the car's charge port sits when parked.
